This whole thread is nothing but a whine full of negative thinking.
I have never bought into the "the going is tough, let's quit and run" mentality.
Yeah, SS now hands out a lot of rejections for focus, noise and similars.
You can whine and cry about it and accomplish nothing, or you can use
those rejections as a learning experience.
You can quit Shutterstock. That is your right. You can  disable your port if
you want to cut off your nose to spite your face. Shutterstock is so huge
they don't care. They won't notice you left.
It's obvious to me that SS has decided to stop accepting a lot of images
because their memory banks are bulging already. So they have become
a lot more picky. Good for them!
It has forced me to become a lot more picky in my uploads as well.
So, the choice is yours. Keep fighting and uploading and collecting money or
quit and lose. Your choice.
I'm going to leave this thread because it way too negative with a lot of loser attitude.
I'm going to find a positive thread, one with ideas on selling images, on increasing income
and on having fun. Know of any? Maybe I should start one.

I have to completely disagree on this point.

If, for example, a batch of 30 photos is completely rejected because of focus and a few days later all the images are approved, then something is wrong. And not with the images, but with the review itself.
I don't see any learning effect there either. Something has changed in the last months and Shutterstock leaves us in the dark here.

I have the impression that batches with one or two less perfect images are then completely rejected. Just an idea.

Ok, it seems that someone has a fetish for manhole covers in autumn  ;).

The only explanation I have is that the pictures were submitted one after the other.
In my experience, that works for such images as well.

The $0.10 is a symbolic value. Of course, there are also the double-digit downloads. But they also existed before the new revenue structure.

In my case, I have an average monthly loss of $63 in subscriptions, compared to the income when each sub brought in $0.38. That's a loss of $750 per year. I can't compensate these losses with the double-digit downloads, because they haven't become more than before. Therefore, RPD is declining for me.

I can certainly understand that contributors want to close their account because they are frustrated, perhaps also in combination with the difficult selection.
I personally would not do that. It would destroy years of work and you give up revenue. You can just let it expire, not invest any more work and take the money that still comes in.

Fact is: The poll results clearly show that shutterstock has lost the position 1. Adobe Stock is the market leader.

Wilm, I think the way you look at it also depends a bit on how long you've been at it and your frustration and that of others, is understandable and comprehensible.
But for me, when the revenue structure was changed, I was still in the old 25-cent level (which you probably don't remember anymore  ;)) and then moved to level 4, which was a significant improvement for me.
Roscoe summed it up nicely. As long as I can afford a nice vacation at the end of the year from my Shutterstock earnings, for example, there is no reason to stare only at the "symbolic" 10 cents.
That it was certainly easier and faster in the past to earn more money here is not to be denied. However, this viewpoint is of no use to a newbie like me in the here and now.
Maybe I will see the situation differently in 5 years. ;)

I know I'm making myself unpopular here, but I am getting a little bored with these 10 cent discussions.

Nobody wants to get only cents for their images, that's why I left for example iStock. It just didn't fit, but I'm not making a big deal out of it.

If I had only 10 cent sales at Shutter, I would say goodbye and that's it.

But there are still some who earn good money with Shutter. I myself see sales in the double digits every day, which compensate for these stupid cent sales.
Except for Alamy, I don't have those sales anywhere, not even Adobe. That still makes Shutter my best agency.

The annoying review is another story.

And as Thijs rightly says, what are the alternatives? Exclusively 25 cent sales at Deposit?

So now you can jump all over me  ;)

I forgot to mention that I have no luck with landscape photos. Occasional 10 cents earnings and this is it.

So I sell landscape photos regularly, but mostly from my area. The competition here is quite clear and photos from here are obviously in demand and quite popular for bike tours.
However, I assume that the photos are not found via terms such as "forest" or "lake", but rather the location was searched. And as with Pete, there are also quite times higher revenues here.

But also sunsets can work, the two following photos have brought me alone in 2 years at Shutterstock over $ 100, for whatever reason.

I know for sure of 2 images that I found by chance on websites for which I never saw any money, respectively were never displayed as download.
When I wanted to investigate the matter after a few months, the websites were no longer findable.
Since the images are hard to find anyway, the number of unpaid images is probably much higher.

482
I thought I had a nice shot of Grad Predjama Castle ( http://www.tuin-thijs.com/images/vakantie_slovenia/predjama-castle-2-20-9-2019.jpg ) until I looked on Shutterstock https://www.shutterstock.com/nl/search/Grad+Predjama . Then I left it as a holiday photo on my website and did not put it on Shuttestock.
Now it is of course much worse at sunsets photos.

Thijs, your picture is perfectly ok. I wouldn't be intimidated by the competition and submit the image - maybe boost the contrast and colors a bit. And stop thinking  ;) And sunsets also do not sell badly with me.

Recently I went to Yellowstone National Park and there is already 106,098 photos from there on SS. What's the point for me to shoot, process, keyword and upload one more photo that no one would able to find.

Well, you never know what will sell. I myself have 1-2 pictures of Antelope canyon and Arches NP, which I sell from time to time. And Route 66 topics - although quite worn out - run actually pretty good. So if I were already there, I would try my luck with Yellowstone Park. For me, that would be more adventure, as the German Lower Rhine area  ;)

484
from their viewpoint there is no reason not to keep reducing payouts :(
Technically SS already have all photos they need. Why would they need a few more photos of sunset or sunrise? I bet they survive even they stop all news uploads.

I am a client an contrbutor, they lack photos from around the world. They haver a lot of the same content and many are just editorial nothing you can use in an ad or post. So if that is what they think then they have no clue as to why its going down hill.

I think that's a good point.
To my surprise, I sell a lot of pictures from my area, and significantly more than of well-known landmarks.
Our area is not world famous, but there is tourism here and obviously the demand for pictures is there.
To cover the demand for comparable places worldwide, you need a lot of amateur photographers - and they are especially discouraged by Shutterstock.

For me, iStock was a bit of a bust.
After my RPD was in the single digits several times, I stopped uploading there. In addition, the upload process there was a pain in the ass for me  ;).
On the other hand, I know many other contributors for whom the mixed calculation works out and the agency runs quite successfully.
In the end, you can't avoid trying out whether the agency fits your own portfolio or not.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Impact of stopping uploads
« on: October 14, 2021, 14:00 »
Impact/benefits of not uploading anymore--

1. Waking up and finally realizing that this business is well past it day
2. More free time to spend on things you enjoy (family, travel, beer)
3. Getting a real paying job instead of wasting time dreaming
4. Not wasting $$$ on expensive equipment anymore

 8)

I have to disagree on one point: I drink a lot of beer when I upload.  This makes the process more fluid ;)

I have no personal experience, but have asked this question before in a German forum. Most have reported that with upload stop the downloads do not decrease immediately, but significantly after 1-2 years.

488
How are sales going on SS for you?
Rubbish for me  :(
I don't, however, blame SS for that as I don't have enough downloads for the old payment scheme to have made much of a difference.
It's numbers that are very low for me.

I can't complain. With 500-600 DLs a month, Shutter is still first for me in terms of revenue, followed by Adobe and Alamy.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Duck Thread a moment in SS forum history
« on: October 13, 2021, 03:05 »

Didn't notice, but I think you're talking about before my time.
At least I never read negative things in the Duch thread. Unfortunately here it is
Pete tries to post a nice topic and you use it to show all your frustrations about all the negative things you've been through. Who's negative here? Pete or You?
If this is the vibe at Microstock, I'm out of here.

I totally agree with you, Thijs. Since I've been in the Shutterstock forum, the tone has been very friendly (mostly) and the contributions are mostly helpful, so the forum bashing here is difficult for me to understand too.

Off Topic / Re: The Hummer Thread

Strange atmosphere now in the shutter forum, there is still quite a lot traffic in the "Show and Tell" section, like the titanic orchestra  :(

After passing the intelligence test for registration and my first posting  ;), I am joining the Shutter- refugees here.
