In all fairness I should note that I didn't design this one (saving all my design skills/time for new Symbiostock themes!) but I invested in a help desk theme that I thought would be great for organizing this stuff.  Glad you like it!

Thanks guys!  I'm working on filling in the remaining guides today and after that I'll spend some time combing the previous discussions for questions/issues to list in the knowledge base, which will be an ongoing process.  Also if anyone wants to be listed on the resources page let me know I haven't filled that out completely yet.

Steve, fixed that up thanks for the suggestion!

Hi All!  I have been working to set up a clear step-by step guide for those who want to get started with Symbiostock and may be newer to WordPress.  I also thought it might be handy to have a searchable Knowledge base with a lot of the questions that are popping up on the forums for when you need a quick answer.

This site is still very much under construction (please excuse any typos and content shifting around over the next few days) but Leo has shared the link here and there and it appears on the awesome http://www.symbiostock.net so I thought I'd do a formal introduction.

The Getting Started tutorials can be found here: http://www.symbioguides.com/getting-started/

You can search the (tiny but quickly growing) Knowledge base, or browse all categories here: http://www.symbioguides.com/knowledgebase/

I have two video tutorials up so far, I do have a few more recorded that will be added over the next week and I do take requests so let me know if you find anything confusing that could benefit from a real time walk through: http://www.symbioguides.com/section/video-tutorials/

If you wish to suggest articles for the database, submit a change to one other tutorials or request a video please send me a message here, email me at amanda [at] creativembers [dot] com, or feel free to leave a comment on the article in question.

I hope this is helpful for the community and maybe even enticing to those that might still be on the fence to jump in and try Symbiostock!

Hi Ron!

Did you get this figured out?  I searched for Dutch on your site and got 39 results.  If you fixed it can you post how just in case someone else runs into this?

105
Hmm that's odd, did you try the "Update public image info"?  I know there were a couple of hiccups with the newest version that need that update to run so results show up.

Are you using any kind of caching plug in?

106
Oh! I know why...you have to include a copy of your search file in your child theme as well.  So just copy searchform_symbiostock.php and it should work fine.

Edit: Okay I thought that was fixed, if you discovered why it wasn't working let us know :)

107
You can do that with CSS, it's a bit safer (or proper or whatever :) ) to do it in the PHP.  Found the post where we worked this out initially:

http://www.microstockgroup.com/symbiostock-technical-support/how-can-i-remove-the-dropdown-in-between-the-search-bar-and-the-search-button/msg313226/#msg313226

The line numbers may be off but it should still work.

Hi Mike, a couple of things to check:

First if you have upgraded to 2.4.9 you will need to the Symbiostock area, and at the bottom of the Network tab check the box for Update public image info and save.

Other things to look at:

1) Under the Wordpress Settings - > Reading, check to make sure you have selected static homepage and chosen the proper page in the drop down for that.

2) On the page you are using for you homepage, check what template you are using (HomePage CTA's works best for putting in the widgets)

Apologies if you've done those already or if I read the question wrong.

Did you take the search box out of your header when you did your customizations?  if you are goign to use the default search box I'm posting a quick tutorial on the code change to take out the drop down box, it's fairly straight forward.  I'll link in just a bit.

For back ups I wouldn't necessarily rely on your host, not all of them have the same back up methods.  You should be able to make a complete back up of your database through your host and there are several popular Wordpress plugins for backing up your site as well.

Life is what happens when you turn off your computer ;)

Aww, crap! I've been doing it wrong.  Going outside to celebrate Canada Day! :D

111
I'm not complaining about the fact that there are updates. I just got confused by the amount of updates and why they don't show in the Wordpress admin panel while the update is available on the .com web site.

I think there might be a small delay between when an update is posted and when it shows up in the  dashboard and with that many updates that quickly it got a little confusing, it should be all good now though.

112
As far as I know nothing is changing with how updates will be provided in the future, but Leo did post this http://www.symbiostock.com/symbiostock-2-4-5-email-and-paypal-bugs-fixed-important-update/ and in the comments it looks like a bit of trouble shooting was involved.

I think while he is trying to fix these last few big bugs things may be a little up in the air today.  I'm sure he'll pop in when he's able to with an update.

113
There isn't a generic contact page, that's one everyone needs to create.  What was your link again? sorry!  You do have the network feature turned on right?

114
Hmm, I'm not 100% on this, but try checking this box:

And then make sure you scroll down to save changes.

115
Do you have the network activated?  I just looked on my test site and when the network is not activated you will not have those options.

116
Just to be sure (because there are a couple of spots that might be confused for each other) you go to the main Symbiostock Network tab and you fill out those options, then be sure to click here:

And fill out the options there as well.  Oh and like Leo said make sure you are logged in as the admin/uploader.

117
Oh I see, just for future reference you  don't want to switch pages or try to do other things while the theme is updating.

118
Users do not need author pages, you are the one putting images on your site, not them.  All users need to do is buy images and stop making spam registrations and comments :)

Child theme - if you make any css changes etc it is best to do them using the child theme otherwise they will be lost everytime there is an upgrade (which there is likely to be while we are still in beta)

Fill in your details again and save them to get symbiocard/author page

I just tried this with the Demo site and the custom css remained in place.  If it's getting deleted on your site we may need to look at how you are upgrading, are you deleting the child/parent themes before installing the new version?  I just clicked upgrade in the theme panel on the parent theme with out activating it and nothing was deleted or changed in my custom CSS panel in the child theme.

Be aware though, I am using the Clean Theme child theme and every time I upgrade the parent SY theme, my custom CSS disappears and I have to add it back to the child theme CSS Edits tab.

119
Did you edit the footer.php on your main theme or child theme?  Keep in mind on the main theme it will get overwritten with upgrades.  It's probably best to add it in a widget.

120
I think the deal is you can't do that because /image is not a static page.

What you could do if you want your homepage to have a bunch of thumbnails like that is to use the home page CTA template and put the Featured Images widget in the area above or below the content, then if you add a lot of images to the featured category the will show up there.

As it is currently the suggested # of featured images is 6 because that will span one row on the default template.  If you add 18 for example this would give you 3 rows of thumbnails.

I would stay away form redirecting your homepage with .htaccess

Symbiostock - Technical Support / Re: Darn Categories
« on: June 03, 2013, 13:01 »
I had my own categories that I had set up and some of them are very similar so it's a bit of a pain to go through and delete them every time making sure I delete the defaults and not my own that I put extra time into optimizing.  It would be super cool if it checked and didn't put them back in after the first install.

Pilens, maybe you could add a poll to the top of this thread with three options to see which way people are leaning?

1) No categories automatically created
2) Only create the categories on the first install of Symbiostock
3) Leave things as they are so they are re-created each time

122
Moving it will also affect SEO as the order of content on the page is taken into account by the search engines.  You could do it with a custom page template though, or another option is to put it in the side bar of the image page so it shows up right under the price options and add to cart area.

I remember the discussion at the time,  I was just pointing out that he didn't get banned for saying he thought inspections were unfair but that he actually did something to try to prove it and then told people about it.  So action vs opinion.

I'm not taking sides or judging what happened there but we should be careful not to represent it as a case where someone got banned for something they wrote, since a lot of people worried about using names are partially basing it on fear of being banned for negative opinions.  Hope that clarifies a bit.

Hey Guys. well... I screwed up doing this. I got a letter from them.My account has been suspended. It was a very, Very stupid thing to do and I broke the agreement with them I've had for 4 1/2 years and I take full and complete responsibility for my actions. If I would have not said anything, no One would have known. it didn't prove anything at all about exclusives getting better treatment at all. I did this as a test and maybe to shed some light on the long Lingering doubts about this long running issue. There are no images on the site that do not belong to me or anyone else. if they terminate my account for doing this, I don't Blame them One bit and I told them so. Bottom Line, it was a Dumb thing to do and Im sorry for it. I hope they understand but, If not I'll take the hit I deserve. Thanks to my friends for the support. laurin

He was banned for breaking the agreement.  If you break a contract and announce you've broken it that is different than being banned for stating an opinion.  I'm not saying it's never happened just pointing out that this specific case wasn't over an opinion but an action. For accuracy.

I don't think first name last initial and a portfolio link is at all unreasonable.

Personally I don't see a huge problem with trolls here, I do sometimes see a problem with lack of respect. Some seem to think a "troll" is someone who disagrees with the majority opinion...loudly.  Just because they annoy you and you disagree does not mean they are "trolling."   I think many get confused by someone that has an unpopular opinion versus some bored 13 year old that comes on a board just to rile people up for fun.  There is an ignore button if you don't feel like wasting your own time refusing to agree to disagree.

The second thing is it makes me really sad to see so many people thinking that the solution to the behavior of companies like Fotolia is to hide and censor themselves rather than deciding to work with better partners or pushing for a change in policy.  There seems to be a ton of complaining about bad policies but when people refuse to fight back what change can be expected?

I also see a people that feel comfortable behind anonymous user names sometimes making personal attacks that they wouldn't consider if they were being held responsible by being identified.  I've often taken breaks from reading MSG after being turned off by overly passionate mob mentality that can up with certain subjects.  Maybe the conversations would be kept more civil if there was more accountability.

Some of the more civilized forums and communities I frequent are the ones where people use names or at least links to their work and have open discussions that tend to remain more civil.  Then I look at things like Youtube comments and see anonymity at work.   I lean toward humanizing things as much as possible.  I like the idea of a name and initial, maybe just that is enough to remind us that there is a person behind that opinion and you can express yours without insults.
