Hi Cascoly, that can be doneso the short answer is yes, but...as you might expect it gets a bit trickier the deeper you go  Give me maybe a day or two and I will finish my research and see if I can find or make a good tutorial.  The better way to go about this is probably being able to save theme options if we are talking about color and font changes so right now I'm focusing on getting a working "Theme Options Panel" going either to add to this theme or to put in future versions depending on what people want. That would hopefully allow you to change things like color, background images and heading fonts without having to mess with code, and be able to save between updates.

Thanks Chico for helping Cathy and for the cool screenshot :)  That bar I'm using at the top of my site is pretty cool, it's called Foobar and there is a lite version available here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/foobar-notifications-lite/ and a commercial version with a ton of features here: http://codecanyon.net/item/foobar-wordpress-notification-bars/411466  I think I'll make a blog post with a review of the ones I'm using on CartoonPictureShop, so many cool plugins around!

Tinny, I'll take a look over what you sent me and get back today, thanks!

It's Amanda, actually but Gillian is floating around here somewhere :)  I've been meaning to update my display name on here anyway, thanks for the reminder!

It looks like you've made a lot of adjustments, you'd certainly be able to make your customizations to this theme as well, though it would take some time to recreate what you currently have, and unless you are doing a child of a child them (I'm going to look into this further) it might be a few extra steps to update.

Can you do me a favor and send me a message with a summary of the main changes you've made and the bugs you still want to fix (other than the footer?)  It's a bit late here, but I can take a look tomorrow for you and see what we can figure out.

Hi Chico!  So for the demo home page I put the slider in the "Home Page - Above the Content" Side bar, this way you can make the slider full width and the main content (text) will line up with your "See also" widget (as long as you have placed that in the "Home Page - Beside Content" widget area.

Here's what I did to set up the demo:

1) I installed Enhanced Text Widget, free from Wordpress plug-in directory here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/enhanced-text-widget/ and placed an instance of that in the "Home Page Above Content" sidebar.  This allows you to use shortcodes to display the slider.

2) I use the free version of the Soliloqy slider which can be installed from the Wordpress plug in directory here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/soliloquy-lite/ and create a slider that is 1130px wide (my height was 300px but you can play with this)  Once you've created a slider it will tell you what shortcode to use for it, ie: [soliloquy id="75"] so you just pop that into your Enhanced Text widget and you should be good to go.

Let me know if that clears it up! I'll write up a tutorial on this with some screenshots and post on my blog tomorrow in case anyone wants to follow along.

I'm ready to put Clean Theme for Symbiostock out as the first official third party Symbiostock child theme!  You can view the demo here: http://www.creativembers.com/symbiothemes/

As this is a first on several levels, I humbly request your gentleness if I need to work out a few kinks.  I'm super excited to get some themes out there to start promoting Symbiostock and the principal behind the project.  Hopefully people who are on the fence about jumping in due to lack of design knowledge or customization skills will be happy to see some plug and play options.

I've set up a support forum for the theme itself to deal with specific questions directly, (trying to keep MSG clean, and support streamlined) but if you any questions feel free to message me here. I have plans to add more themes in the near future, and will be adding features/patches to this theme as details in the parent theme get ironed out.  Free updates are included as upgrades happen.

My road map for future development is taking shape, one of the first things I hope to get added is a working custom options panel that would allow you to choose colors without having to edit any CSS. I'm always open to suggestions and requests.

Soooo......here's where you can get Clean Theme 1.0.0:

Customizing a Child Theme - TUTORIAL

If you want to make color changes or edit fonts etc:

Do you have something totally different in mind for a theme? Send me your ideas.  Also I'm getting ready to do some video tutorials tomorrow, (on general Symbiostock topics and/or customization) please send me your requests!

These are just file you create using your logo/branding image that will show up as your network logo and your logo on the PayPal checkout page, not pre-existing files.  Does that help?

156
Wordpress will put a default menu in for you before you create or set up your own and this will have the Home menu item.  Once you add items to a custom menu and assign it the default menu disappears, so unless you have added "Home" back in with your other menus it will not be there.

Cathy, if my solution above doesn't work message me and I can help you take off the title on the home page!

157
128 is the one I'd go with if you are going to pick one of that bunch, but lose the silly little second speech bubble in the o.  It doesn't work when it's sized down.  Are the colors set in stone?  They feel a  little....dark and musty? :D Sorry!  I think something fresher would be good.

158
That's a little different :)  It's not like in Microstock you ask all the photographers to go out and do a custom shoot for free and then only pay one.

No offense meant of course, just as a designer I'm not a terribly big fan of sites like this.

159
I'll give this a shot:

1) Not really with regular CSS. (that I know of...)

2) This is a bit tricky because the main content area has different "states" depending on the width of the browser/screen so when you adjust it, it has to mirror all the adjustments that the .container class goes through.  These are found in the bootstrap.css.

3) Not quite sure what you mean on this one, can you clarify a bit?  Which homepage template are you using and do you want it all to be full width?

4) This can also be controlled by the page template you choose for your blog page, are you using one with a side bar currently?

160
I think you can just use the option to create a custom Menu item by pasting in your home url and naming it Home.

Symbiostock - General / Re: Ktools or symbiostock?
« on: April 29, 2013, 22:58 »
Symbiostock.  Whatever features it lacks can be added as it matures.  My personal experience with Ktools (v4) is that it is bloated, buggy and the support is...iffy.  With Symbiostock you get the benefits of the community and networking.  Plus making it pretty is a dream compared to Ktools!

Of course it depends on what you are going for and what features are absolutely essential to you. Good luck either way!

Okay I've been working hard to get a base child theme put together, and here is what I have so far:

View the Demo: http://www.creativembers.com/symbiothemes/

Some information about the theme, and a place to leave feedback, suggestions etc:
http://www.creativembers.com/introducing-clean-theme-for-symbiostock/

If you are interested please leave a comment on that post, I'm just trying to get a feel for how many people might be looking into pre-made child themes and what you all are looking for. This one is fairly simple in structure, with no php edits and no changes to default pages, so it should be compatible out of the box with any set up and future updates.

There are many more things I can add to future templates including custom page layouts and built in widgets if the demand is there.  Thanks everyone for the encouragement!

PS Demo content is just snapshots I had lying around, I am an illustrator NOT a photographer so please excuse the quality! :)

Thanks guys! :D  I am still tweaking here and there. As soon as I finish breaking and fixing my site for educational purposes (and get some more images up) I'll move on to making a few child themes.  I think this project has reignited my web design urges!

Gotta love the actual communication! Thanks Scott, it's such a nice change to see things like this :)

BTW I just got off the phone with Bluehost, some time in May they will be adding VPS and Dedicated server plans!  The rep told me pricing for VPS will start around $30 so I am for sure moving this back there.  Should be a fun opportunity to write a guide on moving a Symbisotock site haha.

166
Just sharing my experience with inMotion Hosting. Not impressed, looks like I may have to move back to my original host.  Customer service was unhelpful during the sign up process, it took a full 3 days to be able to access my website. Once it was up the FTP problems started, endless waiting for server messages..server timed out etc.  I submitted a ticket, with all the extra information they requested and then never heard back again, even after asking if the ticket was still open.

That was last week, still no word.  Today my site was down for a solid half hour. (Apparently a large number of their shared hosting customers were affected.) Their support live chat was down and their phone rings busy.  A search on Twitter shows a LOT of unhappy customers saying typical inMotion, frequent outages etc.  So all in all, not great.  Unfortunately, I'd not recommend this company.

For what it's worth, in 10 years using Bluehost for multiple sites I've had to contact support maybe 5 times, and they were always available.  I just wish I had noticed the coming soon page for their new VPS options :P Could have saved myself the move back!

Edit: Sorry, I should add that other here, including Leo may have had a better experience than I did with them, I was just at the end of my rope today with this latest issue!

Hmm I had one today for $12.60 it would be awesome if all of these were the result of a marketing push of some sort.

168
Awesome! Thanks Leo, that's what I kept finding. I'm sure that'll make it easier in the future.  On the bright side I learned a whole bunch of new stuff while looking into it.  You really will make programmers out of us yet!

The proper way is to copy the unedited php files (do not remove the parent theme original :) ) into your child theme folder and make edits there.  Some of these will work on their own, for example if you copy one of the home page templates it should be fine without any supporting files.

For other files you may need to copy any supporting files it calls to.  For example in header.php, on line 93 it looks for the search form (searchform_symbiostock.php):

include_once('searchform_symbiostock.php');

If you go ahead and copy the included php files as well as the file you want to changes things SHOULD work.  I say should because...well, I'm learning as I go :D

So for the footer.php, I go check out the code and do a search for "include_once" and I see that on line 34 it says:

<?php include_once('modal-login.php'); ?>

So if you copy both footer.php AND modal-login.php into your child theme that should work.  I'm actually about to try this out as the footer is my next area to tackle so I'll let you know if it doesn't work for some reason.  Again, disclaimer...I'm new at this, so if anyone feels the need to correct me be my guest!

Edit: For the Footer:

In addition to footer.php you need to copy BOTH modal-login.php and register_symbiostock.php (because modal-login.php calls for register_symbiostock.php)  The nice thing is if you miss one the error message will tell you what it is and where it's being called:

Warning: include_once(register_symbiostock.php) [function.include-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/cartoo11/public_html/wp-content/themes/symbiostock-child/modal-login.php on line 15

I'm still researching to see if there is a better way to deal with these includes without having to copy all the files, but for now this works.  You will probably want to make not of which files you copy that you don't actually edit so you can easily update them from the parent theme later if needed.

Symbiostock - Technical Support / Re: Server Question
« on: April 24, 2013, 15:10 »
Hi there!  Could you clarify a few things?  It sounds like you have two different hosting accounts, as domains themselves have no space limits attached.  Can you let us know who your host is and where you registered your domain names?

It will depend on your hosting account but for the most part you should be able to transfer your new domain (the one for Symbiostock) onto your main hosting account to take advantage of that server space.  Depending on who your host is a lot of times their support will be able to help you with that process.

171
Hi guys, just saw this. I got this working with help from theruchos! But I actually edited the search form.  for some reason every CSS trick I tried gave me search errors. If anyone else has that problem this is how I did it.

You edit the searchform_symbiostock.php to make the change, now I have a copy of this file in my child theme because I made some adjustments to the header.

The lines that need to be edited are Lines 27 to 33 which read:

<select id="select_type" name="post_type" >

        <option value="image">Images</option>

        <option value="post">Blog</option>

</select>

You replace that with just one line:

<input type="hidden" name="post_type" value="image" />

That's it! I suggest maybe making a duplicate of your child theme to try it if you are unsure, otherwise just a back up and you should be fine.  Hope that helps! If you have questions feel free to message me.

Symbiostock - General / Re: How to self police the network
« on: April 23, 2013, 14:05 »
I can understand not wanting to get into the politics of it all, especially for someone who's schedule is already jam packed with being the creator of this awesome project on top of a full time artist.

For those that really think a central network is essential we should be looking at all the options...what if someone other than Leo ran a centralized site that listed the participating stores and pooled results from people who want to participate?  What if it was run more like a co-op made specifically of those people who want to build a larger network?

I don't think the main network aspect has to be based on the Symbiostock brand or hosted on the main site for it to work necessarily.  It could just be a separate group of MSG contributors who use the theme and want to inter-promote and raise awareness as independent sellers.  The rules for being in the group seem like it would be a bit of a gray area, but I'd say anyone who is active on the MSG/Symbiostock forums and has stock portfolios at some main sites (ensuring they understand the legality of producing stock) should be enough to get in?  Maybe make everyone who joins sing a simple contract saying they won't post inappropriate content (adult images etc) and will take minimum security precautions with their site.

The one thing I'd really like to see a group like that stay away from is turning people down based on quality.  There are enough exclusive groups out there.  A system like this really encourages survival of the fittest on it's own.  If your content is good, people will want to network and your images will sell encouraging you to produce more.  If someone with a tiny sub par portfolio wants to join, I say let them.  They will either grow and learn or not.  As long as someone has experience with stock basics (copyright, model releases etc) I personally think they should be allowed to join.

173
Awesome! What an appropriate image sale :D

Hey Leo, I like the knowledge base idea and I'd be willing to help with instructions and articles on set up and customizing!

175
Probably the tiniest bug ever, just pertaining to themes...when trying to put in my own bg image in the child theme it wasn't working, I looked at the original styles.css in the parent theme and noticed the single quotes are missing around the url to the background image.  One I put them in it was all fixed!
