Appears to be working for me, but I don't currently have enough to cash out so I just get the normal message about the $100 threshold.

Selling Stock Direct / Re: Ktools...What Are The Downsides?
« on: February 19, 2013, 03:18 »
I've had multiple experiences with customer support that left me questioning my investment.  Forums are a little quiet with the exception of on or two more active customers.  Beyond that I've found the software to be more buggy than it looks at first glance and had issues with the search as of the last update I did.

I'd agree with the others above that customization can be a pain due to the way updates are done, and unless you are at least somewhat comfortable with html/php and css you may find yourself in over your head.

Despite being a bit soured on the customer service experience, this is pretty robust script and it will sell images out of the box.  I've done zero advertising for my site and get a steady trickle of sales through Google searches alone.

There are a number of other solutions in development right now, personally I'm looking forward to seeing how some of the WordPress based solutions evolve in the next few months.  For a smaller personal site it may be your best bet, especially if you are just experimenting and looking to keep start up costs to a minimum.

Back end is looking so great!  I can't wait to play with this :)  Already getting a domain and branding lined up and some design ideas.  When it comes to customizing look and feel I hope to be able to help out a bit for others who are new to Wordpress and CSS.

I'd say to anyone that's watching this project with interest don't be intimidated by setting a a WordPress site.  It's an absolutely fantastic platform, very user friendly and massively well documented with a really helpful web community.

forgive my ignorance on this subject but how will the search process work? Since this would be the focal point of this new site, shouldn't we have an actual valid discussion how this will come about? Not one or two minds working on it but a collective of thoughts and problem solving skills by many would make for a better search system put in place.

For what it's worth the search function (as far as I've tested on http://www.clipartillustration.com,) is already worlds better than the other stores I've set up using popular image selling software with a much higher price tag.  I can't wait to get me hands on it. :)

I think the problem is you are making claims you aren't really backing up with anything.  Personal attacks actually, that you have no real evidence for, just a conspiracy theory.

You have every right to have an opinion and I'm not trying to pick on you, but when you accuse someone of something like that you should probably take into account the level of respect other people here have for the one you are attacking, based on years of Sean participating in this community and being nothing but helpful and honest whether we like it or not. ;)

Sorry ouchie but that sounds a bit tin-foil hat to me, and it's insulting not only to Sean but to the intelligence of everyone who participated.  The once thing that causes people to love/hate Sean Locke is his brutal honesty.  He's been telling like it is, everyone's feelings be damned, since the early 2000's.  If he had manipulative/politically minded motives he wouldn't have gotten involved at all, seeing as his iStock income supported his family.  All I see is someone who stood up to a nasty corporation that is past it's prime, and got punished for it.  He's being made an example of.  Bullies will always try to silence those that scare them. That's all this is.

What I find really interesting, is that the people who were most vocal in that February 2nd thread (to the point of being fanatical and quite frankly abrasive to those on fence or who disagreed,) remain in the Getty family. As several other people have pointed out, there is a nicely organized list on Google docs that any iStock/Getty admin can access, with the usernames of everyone who stated they were participating, so if that was the only motivation I'd expect quite a few other would be gone by now.

On a personal note, Sean, I remember getting a good chuckle out of all the ruffled feather the first few months you were on the iStock forums, back when things were turning from hobby to real potential.  Watching you prosper and push limits was inspiring. You'll obviously be more than fine wherever you go with your talent and business sense.  Good luck, and a sincere thanks for always being real.

Fingers crossed they'll show some love to illustrators too.  That facebook group list gave me a warm and fuzzy flashback to 2003.  I even missed Peebert for a moment. :) (Who am I kidding I've always missed Peebert.)

I only had 26 files left as of today but I've deactivated 20 of them leaving only a few images I don't really care about until last payout.

« on: February 01, 2013, 14:18 »
I'm wasn't exclusive so I had to check a couple of sites.  The extended license terms are slightly different everywhere but at the time I believe at least one of the sites I was with allowed print on demand use in a extended license for resale.  The image in question hadn't had anything but standard sales so I was sure it wasn't legit.  I don't think resale licenses that allow POD are very common.

236
I'd vote B, since A could cause a lot of headaches for set up on different hosting situations especially with users who aren't super tech savvy.  A could be less secure if not done right.

I was just doing some random searches to see if there were similar products to what I was creating.  I was able to to easily check that that image hadn't had any extended license sales, so I gave them a  call and I just remember being really surprised when I got a real person on the line fairly quickly (and I was at night if I recall correctly) they were very pleasant and eager to help.  Then next day the product was gone.

I've also noticed on quite a few stores that use clip art type images you will see the store owner posting a message about using properly licensed clip art and a link to the artists whom they have deal with.

From my experiences on Zazzle they seem to take copyright pretty seriously and the community there that is active on the forums is more knowledgeable than the average internet user.  You have to click a specific box agreeing that you own the copyright of materials/ have the legal right to use them for each product created.

In one case I found an image of mine being used improperly and when I contacted Zazzle by phone, I actually got a person to speak in the department that deals with copyright questions and the issue was resolved very quickly (within a day) and professionally.

Zazzle has big ongoing deals with companies like Disney and Marvel comics so they can't really afford to be slack on copyright violations.  You know how militant the Mouse can be. ;)

I hope that helps set some people at ease on this particular bit of the ordeal.  Some people may be smart/dumb enough to go to the trouble of finding, downloading, and saving images in their  Google Drive acct. but they would still have to blatantly ignore Zazzle's terms and risk Zazzle shutting them down as soon as it's seen or reported.

You have a great portfolio and a unique style!  Sorry you are having to deal with this. As a former exclusive illustrator there are other sites out there that are much more enjoyable to upload to/deal with and you'd probably do well as an independent if you decide to go in that direction.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Question from designers about RM
« on: January 30, 2013, 15:54 »
I think Cypher's asking if anyone here has experience with their RM images being moved and might know.  I kind of doubt a live chat agent will be able to give specific details on that or even know of the issue.

That's an interesting question.  I would think that if an image has sold as RM even once, Getty would have to wait until the time period for that deal has passed before "demoting" the image since the designers already paid for specific rights.   I wonder if the images they are deciding need to be RF are the ones that have never been licensed while listed as RM?  Then again it's Getty so....

I will say that my interactions directly with Getty's version of contributor relations has been MUCH more helpful and professional than with iStock.  Unfortunately (fortunately?) my contract with them has nothing to do with RM images so I probably wouldn't get an answer.

If I was a designer purchasing RM I'd want to be really sure before working with Getty now that these files can move around.

The rest is just details.

 :D This made me smile!

On a serious note if you are looking to learn PHP (or just about any other programming/design related thing) I can't recommend Lynda.com enough, I think they even have a 7 day free trial now.  If I want to learn something I'll usually sign up for a month and go crazy with the lessons.  There is some other site now too that is getting mentioned a lot I think it's Treehouse....something? Sorry I'll try to grab a link later if I can find it!

Hi Leo!  I am still super interested in this project too, sorry didn't see this thread until now.  My PHP isn't up to snuff to help with the programming but I may be able to help with some template design options once it's ready.

Also (if this was mentioned before I apologize!) if you were able to set a up a Wiki type deal, I know there is at least one or two good opensource choices, I'd be more than happy to donate my time to help fill out FAQ/Knowledge Base and tutorial articles with screen shots and step by step for the less tech savvy that might be interested.

Wow.  I just lost a lot of respect for a number of people here.

There really is no need to bash people for having an opinion outside the plan here.  How DARE he question a deleted post!! Please.  There was no crazy personal attack going on until you all jumped on him. He didn't say anything that wasn't true and I think the collective anger at Getty/iStock doesn't need to spill over into pettiness towards others here.  The thread may have a single purpose but last I checked this is still an open public forum and people are still allowed to have their opinions.

Just because someone doesn't have a large (or any) portfolio on iStock doesn't mean they don't get a voice here.  I jumped ship over there years ago and I'm still watching all of this very closely because it affects all of us when an industry leader has stooped this low.  Getting so upset over some stray comments and piling on to bully someone who dares have an opposing point is ridiculous and does nothing productive toward your goals.

Snobs indeed. "Get back to SS forum where you can act like you know something"  What a bunch of bullies you sound like.

« on: January 17, 2013, 14:39 »
Just a note for those that are deleting...I deactivated all 428 illustration files in my portfolio and dropped the crown the month they first announced the whole RC mess, after which I couldn't see ANY of my stats so if you want access to your financials tab leave at least 1 or 2 files active.  I ended up experimenting with uploading a few files again late last year but after this new mess I realize there's no going back. I reuse to work with a company that continually spits in our faces. I'll be de-activating the very few files I put back. (25) and leaving one so I have access to my financials tab.

Oh and to those who are right on the edge of dropping the golden shackles...there is life after exclusitivity! ;)

Illustration - General / Re: Illustrator CS6 BUG

I usually trim things instead of using a clipping mask on the file I export just because I've come across so many designers that aren't familiar with editing them in illustrator.  I do wish they'd fix it so gradients with transparency didn't rasterize when exported to EPS 10 though! :)

Great idea Cory!  I'm finally getting my personal blog up and running this week and an article on other independent sites sounds like a good way to start.

Name of Site: Clip Art Candy
URL: http://www.clipartcandy.com
Owner/Artist: Amanda Bodack
Clip Art Candy sells fun modern clip art and illustrations with an emphasis on people and vector characters.

I don't understand why there is still no simple match all terms options.  The search hasn't improved as far as I can see after updating to 4.1.6.  I'm very disappointed.  I don't expect them to fix it and it seems like with every feature they add things are getting more complicated rather than more functional.

Found it here: http://www.imagedirekt.com/en/royaltyfree-images-photos/2012669.html

Try Tineye.com when you search for images most of the time it works great! ;)

Edit oops I see the artist was found on istock, but still check out tineye, its good for this kind of thing!

I dropped the crown the month they revealed the new royalty plan/RC debacle.  Between the terrible customer service, and payment issues that was it for me.  In my case it was worth it to have my freedom, it took a while to build back up financially but now I have the peace of mind that my income is spread out over several sites one of which is all mine so I don't have to lose sleep over iStock/Getty changing the game overnight.  It's a personal decision based on you circumstances but I'm one happy former exclusive.  Good luck either way!
