Veer / Re: Review time
« on: September 30, 2010, 19:47 »
I've no reason to join in and complain with you - all of my dash for cash submissions have been reviewed now, and out of 427 only 2 were rejected. No changing of rules or review behavior to be observed when I was getting near the 400 mark. Never received an update email on the earnings after the first one, though.

Oh, I might add: not a single sale yet either.

Fags resting on the ends of sofas, FD?  :P

I'm guessing this is at least partly due to your absolutely beautiful portfolio....which I will never look at again because it makes me hungry. :)

Veer / Re: The Veer Puzzle

I'm honestly not sure yet as I've never tried it. iStock was very strict about rejecting any raster illustration that looked like it was built in a vector program and I've had several requests from clients in the past for making just raster versions available.  On the other hand on places like SS getting a subscription royalty for a fully editable vector seems weird to me.  Ahh, sorry for hijacking this thread a little.

On topic I emailed support at Veer last night and was told that they are still planning to offer vectors with raster sizes in the future and that we can submit our own JPEG versions as well as the EPS.

I know this is old but I am having the same problems with 123rf not reading and have also tried every suggestion in this thread a few times.  Any update?

I'm in the same boat. High hopes, but disappointing sales. It's been about a year since we uploaded thinking there would be rasterized vectors made available. I just haven't had the free time to create raster versions of my whole portfolio and upload them myself. Maybe I should have made it a priority... if I'd known it would be this long, maybe I would've. But instead of continuing to upload there, I've uploaded to a couple of other sites who performed that service for me. One of them has done very well, and the other it's too soon to say.

Still hoping for good things from Veer. I do like them. Glad to hear some photographers are having increased sales. Mine have increased but still way too few to get very excited about at all.

I was wondering, if we do happen to have high resolution jpgs of our illos can we upload them so that the smaller raster sizes are available?  I am/was about to start uploading there today (all illustration) but I'm a little concerned about this and the resale license that you can't opt out of.

Eta: Sorry for OT question!

Veer / Veer?

Question answered (very quickly!) by Veer support. Nothing to see here, sorry!

That's lovely and all, but it does nothing to help vector artists with the fact that our targets are double that of photographers.  Good for people with split portfolios to have more options I suppose.

307
How do you ignore someone?  I can't seem to find it, probably super obvious I know.   oops found it!

Jen's post and finding of the original announcement speaks volumes to me.  One more call out that will go unanswered to I'm sure.  I think it's been mentioned many times over by the same folks pointing out the Vetta saturation problem that this occurs in certain specific searches.  I have not seen anyone claim that it's the case for every search.  Also some great examples have been provided that undeniably showcase a bias toward Vetta.

As for my 30 Vetta files, because they are vector (another area where photographers were given one deal and vector artists another, with a promise of "we'll announce changes coming soon for vectors!" which never happened,) there is no current price change and in 12 days when my exclusivity is up it won't matter anyway.

I just want to clarify that I think Lisa is nothing short of amazing and if I ran a stock site, I'd probably do everything in my power to get contributors like her to stay too.  Also I have nothing personal agianst anyone who got a call.

That being said, a company picking and choosing who they want to reach out to seems to be more of the inner circle nonsense that iStock has come to be known for.  I still find the whole thing offensive. While the main thread on iStock is circling the drain there have been plenty of legitimate questions that have gone completely unanswered.  The promise of "dialogue" from the ceo was pathetic joke.  And yet they had time to make personal calls.

309
SERIOUSLY.  Every time I think we have reached the pinnacle of ridiculousness, the current iStock saga is ramped up a notch. If there honestly were calls going out to certain people while the rest of us get no REAL communication from anyone official in a 5,000 + post official thread that truly is LOW. They could take the time to make personal calls but can't take the time to answer questions in a post?

Also I have to wonder if these calls actually went out how they managed to avoid calling ANYONE that spoke out in the forums.  Lobo said there were about 840 different posters in that epic thread with the vast majority being opposed to whats going on and the lack of communication we are getting, and none of those hundreds of pissed off people mentioned getting a call.  Then again maybe they were asked not too.  At least one well established diamond mentioned openly in that thread that she was asked by iStock admins not to discuss certain things on the forums.

Interesting side note....my sales have fallen over 50% since I first posted in the announcement thread and the vector thread asking for clarification.  Quite the coincidence with sales tanking when I spoke out. I was told that the effects of becoming non exclusive do not take place until the 30 day wait period is up so the two week severe sales slump should not be from my cancellation.

« on: September 09, 2010, 22:11 »
In all fairness I think Lobo and his taco have no power whatsoever to get an answer. ;) And he has been pretty fair with leaving posts alone (as long as there are no personal attacks, though some border on that and have been left alone.)  I have never ever seen such a lack of iStock cheerleaders in an announcement thread like this.

I've been buying from iStock since 2003, contributing since 2004 and exclusive since it was an option.  I have referred 100+ (paid/tracked referrals) buyers and fellow artists over the years and told countless others great things about iStock for years. This was the last straw for me.

I canceled my exclusivity yesterday based on Kelly's "response" to our concerns.  Today I opened accounts at Dreamstime, Fotolia and Shutterstock.  29 days to go.  I'm going to go deactivate some more images from iStock now.  I'm done waiting for a reasonable answer to any of this from iStock HQ.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Best match search favours photos
« on: August 13, 2008, 00:56 »
The illustrations you are talking about are most likely 3D renders and Photoshop work, which as you mentioned show up under the Photo option even with Illustrations unchecked.  I has been speculated that they show up so high in the best match sort because it may be weighted to show images available in the largest sizes first.

There have been quite a few mentions of this anomaly on iStock's forums.   I believe the best match sort order at iStock is changed or tweaked more frequently than most would imagine. I'm sure with all of the data the programmers have they are always working towards a search that is best for the buyers and has the highest overall sales results. :)

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Upload from DeepMeta is messed up
« on: August 11, 2008, 16:34 »
I think they made changes to the API again and DeepMeta will need some tweaks to catch up.  At least that's the message I'm getting when I try to open it today.

I have to jump in here and say what's always said....but here it is yet again.  From a designers perspective, we'd rather have a completely unfiltered image to work with.  They blow up better and retain more original data which makes it possible to filter it to our needs.

A good stock image is one that can fit the widest array of uses and situations.  An image that you've sharpened or saturated may look great on your screen but cause huge expensive headaches when blown up for a large print job for example.

I seriously doubt it has anything to do with them being like "spoiled children" and more to do with providing sound images to clients.  But heck, what do I know? :)

314
Um would it be a problem if some background type images that have icon/elements in them overlap?  Or should we keep them strictly separate?

315
Thank you Leaf!!!! :D

316
I think Robin is right!  I used to do a lot of "girls shopping" images all the way back to 2004 and they used to be the big sellers!  Now I see tons of design elements being best sellers.  The sad thing is they all sort of look the same, but from a stand point of what is useful I can see why they work.

One thing to consider though is that they are hard to get accepted at least on iStock since they are getting pretty saturated with these too!  I really wish I had a crystal ball to see what the next design trend will be! :)

Illustration - General / Re: How to improve vector sales?
« on: June 16, 2008, 02:50 »
Aww thanks Steph! If it would make you feel any better I'll send you the eps of my first person attempt so you can laugh at how awful it was. :)  And that was in 2004 when I had literally never created an illustration before. (Actually some of my older stuff is still in the port for sentimental value and the occasional trickle of sales!)

If someone asks me I still say I can't draw because I feel like I have a such a long way to go and no formal training, I think it's a constant learning process for every artist so jump right in and don't get discouraged!

iStockPhoto.com / Re: More evidence that IS favors Exclusives
« on: February 11, 2008, 19:53 »
Best match may have been tweaked sometime in the last two days for what it's worth.  For some reason my portfolio (probably still too small and aging) seems to be dramatically affected by Best Match changes and I think it happens more often than people may realize.

I am exclusive but I still feel jilted by best match occasionally.  I really don't think that exclusives get much of a hike if any n the search results, at least not me personally.

I had canceled my contract for a few months and didn't see a drop in number of downloads, just the normal fluctuations.
