Website is down for me too, but the FTP server seems to be accepting my uploads.

I wonder what the change was?

I haven't seen any dramatic difference in my download rates at DreamsTime over the last week.  I've got about average in sales this month.

As it's been stated, NASA imagery is public domain - no copyright.

But I'd like to clarify that just because research is government funded, it's not automatically non-copyrighted.

Most research work done at universities are government funded.  When a professor or graduate student comes up with something marketable, the university owns the intellectual property and can license it to whomever they choose (typically first dibs to the researcher who discovered it).

As far as figures published in scientific articles, those are typically copyrighted by the journal's publisher (yes the researcher doesn't typically retain copyright).

One typically has to get prior permission from the journal to put an article they published into their own dissertation/thesis (as I did).

Thanks for the thoughts.  If it's all about return, then I think I'm fine with my rate of return.

There seems to be a consensus that editorial images should be put up only at RM sites, such as Alamy.  What are some of the reasons for this?

Personally, half my SS images are editorial (mainly travel, parades, sports and other events).  I've got some up on Alamy as RM, but I still get way more per image per year with RF on SS and now DT+BS.

No apologies needed.  I asked for advice, and got it.

Thanks again everyone.

Naw.  I've been contributing since 2005, and have several thousand images up.  It would seem like a waste to pull those all from the other sites.  Just one of those wishful thinking / grass is greener on the other side.

Also, I sold an editorial image on Getty via Scoopt and netted a few hundred bucks.  Since half my SS images are editorial, and IS/Getty won't let you contribute editorial afterall.  Exclusivity is out.

Do the images eventually turn up when all is well, or do I need to reupload them later?

General Stock Discussion / Re: What's your niche?
« on: December 09, 2008, 20:02 »
My niche is whatever I like to take pictures of at the time.  I think you need to find a niche if you really want to be successful in this business.  I on the other hand am happy having this as supplemental income - a very lucrative hobby.

I would think if I got a "niche" I would get bored of shooting the same stuff.  Of couse, 'Jack of all trades, master of none' comes to mind.

Thanks for the input everyone.

I just wanted to test the waters.  Looking at my earnings, it's actually 16% is iStock (58% SS - due to all the editorials), so exclusivity is out.

38
I'm getting lazy and day-dream about uploading to just one site.  Currently IS is only about 30% of my income, but I can only upload about half the images I produce there a week due to the my 20 image upload maximum.

I also understand that Silver Exclusive ISers can contribute to Getty.  Does that include editorial images too?

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Underwater Photography
« on: August 23, 2008, 02:20 »
I decided to go the cheaper and someone less robust route.

I got an Ewa-Marine U-A bag for under $300.  I was only snorkeling, so depth wasn't a problem.  Got some good shots of sea turtles and fish in the reefs in Hawai'i.

My complaint about the U-A bag is the maximum filter size of 72mm, while I have mostly 77mm lenses.  I had to borrow my wife's 28-135 to get something to fit.

The new U-B100 was just released which could accomodate the 77mm lens, but wasn't available yet.

Nice thing was it was much easier to pack than a real housing.  Important since I wasn't just on a shooting trip (Honeymoon).

Cameras / Lenses / Re: My next purchase with stock money

I'd gotten to the point where I have all the glass I need for now, and figured I'm finally done buying gear*.

Then I break my trust Sigma flash.  Guess my next purchase is a 580EX.

*I'll be fine until Canon announces a 24-70 2.8L IS (rumored for Sept) - then I'll be pining for that.

Yes and yes.

Do a search for a generic model release.

Cool.  I never knew about the lightboxes.

I've got 3 pics in the celebrity set.  Nice to live in LA.

I love having another outlet for my editorial images.  Up until DT started accepting editorials, it was just SS or Alamy.

I wanted to shoot wide angle while snorkelling.  I was looking into renting the Canon 20mm 2.8.  Might that be *too wide* (on a 5D)?

I often shoot nature stuff with my 12-24, but it won't fit in the Ewa-Marine bag I plan to get.

It's either the 20mm or a 28-135 3.5-5.6 for wide angle.  How easy is it to "zoom" with one of these bag housings on?

I can also slap on my 50 1.4.

BTW:  I'm not that new to photography - one of the other posters in the thread was.  I've been shooting for a few years - so I'm experienced enough to be dangerous...

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Get Adobe Lightroom.  Huge time saver.  Academic pricing is pretty good ($100 at UCLA).  And make sure you keyword and descript in the meta data, so you don't have to redo it at each site.

Want models?  Join Model Mayhem or use Craigslist.

I reiterate that earnings per month will vary widely.  I don't really put up the most marketable stuff, I put up mostly pictures I'd take anyway because I enjoy photography.  So not suprisingly, my close to 2000 images only pulls in about $800 a month (hardly any model released pics).  But, that's $800 I wouldn't be making otherwise if my images just collected dust on my HD.

47
The more I think about it, the more likely I'll be getting that Ewa-Marine bag.  I don't think I can handle the shutter-lag inherent in P&S cameras...or the image quality.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: I don't get the lensbaby...
« on: May 20, 2008, 15:27 »
I've gotten a number of Lensbaby shots on IS (bought it through an IS promotion).

I agree the advantage is quick selective focus, unlike vaseline on a UV filter.

I was looking at the Olympus 1030 SW, as it can be used when snorkelling.  Does anybody have any experience using this camera (or anything similar) with microstock submissions, after some Photoshopping and downressing (to deal with noise).

Obviously, I'm not expecting SLR type image quality.

It's either that or an Ewa-Marine enclosure for my 5D.

Last four days, my BS downloads have suddently doubled (or trippled on one day) compared to my usual.  Thursday, I made almos twice as much on BS than IS (usually the other way around).

Anybody else, or am I just experiencing a fluke?
