I've got both books from Amazon, Ellen's a few days ago and this one today.

Both are aimed at people with little experience in microstock. But they are very different.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: What the $%^&### is an artifact?
« on: August 16, 2010, 15:07 »
I tried to explain it with an example: http://miklav.blogspot.com/2010/06/photo-editing-how-to-reduce-artifacts.html
(I did write about it here in MSG too but can't easily find my post)

I do not see artifacts at 100% but I do easily see them at 400%.

wouldn't it be easier so submit a proper property release rather than a fake model release?

I will repeat my question, which may be so simple-minded that no one thought it necessary to reply: why don't the really big stock producers sell their images directly, from their own sites?  It's obviously possible, and many buyers probably already know their names.
When we met at CEPIC conference in Dublin a couple weeks ago Yuri Arcurs said he is preparing to launch direct sales from his own site. Andres said he has similar plans (seems to be less developed though than Yuri's)

Didn't Jonathan Ross recently launch his own site?  I think he accepts contributors too?
I wonder what his status is at those sites he contributes to?  Would supported sited dump Yuri if he started his own site?
Yes Jonathan did launch his own site, but that's a different story. He didn't setup a site to sell his own portfolio. He did setup a niche collection that specializes on human-impacted spaces without human in the picture; and he is open for other contributors. And his primary sales objective is to focus on non-exclusive multiple distribution channels rather than direct sales from his own site. Agencies like Corbis and others are to sell that collection.

Cutcaster / Re: Cutcaster down
« on: June 14, 2010, 12:34 »
Works for me. But I don't have any single sale and therefore don't bother with uploads. Sorry John.

I wonder how did it go today

BTW the forecast for Friday is good!

182
It might take a while because we would like to grow our customer and contributor base side by side, and we might not be able to let everyone in immediately.

Translation: We've already got all the really good stuff we want locked in.  We'll get to you when we want to.
No, to me it means acknowledgment of the common issue with new microstock sites when contributors are actively invited and then loose interest due to slow sales and lack of growth...

Just a couple of suggestions on what to see in Dublin

Take the DART (commuter rail) along the coast, costs about 5 and it give a lovely view of the coast.
The Guinness Store House (which is a museum to Guinness) and you can pour (and drink) your own pint of Guinness, plus they have a fabulous rooftop bar.
What direction to take DART, and to what station? Would it be worth to get out of the train at any stops along the coast for some nice views?

I do not know why you all are so happy ?

The same people  sold their entire market and customers to Getty...
I am happy because StockXpert was one of my favorite microstock sites, and I hope the replacement could become as good.

And BTW they didn't sell it to Getty, they sold it to Jupiter and Jupiter did develop it and did include StockXpert to some of their projects.

187
I've got 4 Polylooks sales in May. Not too bad for the start, hope that will grow...

DepositPhotos / Re: Who has had sales at DepositPhotos?
« on: May 31, 2010, 07:44 »
From time to time I am getting subscription sales. Like a couple per month. Still better than Yay :) But worse than Crestock.

Paha_L and Mikhail, you'll have to excuse the in-jokes about swimming for reflectors.
I don't have problems with the jokes, but the date is a problem! I am really sorry I have to miss the event as I will arrive in the morning of the 8th :(
(no I can't re-schedule that)

Mostphotos.com / Re: Shiny new website.

Doesn't that resemble the scenario with LuckyOliver? Efforts made for site design and improvement, but not to marketing; there are no sales and at the end site will have to close...

Off Topic / Re: I had to post this
« on: May 17, 2010, 16:29 »
Maybe it's not very polite to post things like this, but since it has 4 000 000 views I just have to share it with you. It made my day.  ;D

I like this one better (and btw it got over 9 mln views by now):

hi i have some questions..

like we have to choose between price, DISCOUNT, NORMAL, PREMIUM.. what should we choose? zoonar is more a midstock than microstock? shall we put a 'better' price?
It was mentioned in this thread a couple of pages ago. For photos represented in other microstocks we are asked to use "Discount" price. Normal is for midstock and premium is for traditional macro stock - but either of these 2 aren't expected to be set for photos that can be found on cheaper microstock.

I never had the whole batch rejected because of 1 image, I only had 1 (or 2 or 3) images rejected but the rest accepted.

However I never had any problems with the content of my pictures (like noise, spots or anything), it has always been my mistakes with sending a few undersized images in a batch - may be that's the reason they accept the rest.

194
I only had "partial QC failure" with Alamy, they never turned all ma batch because 1 or 2 photos (sometimes I forget to mark those below 16mpx and upload them by mistake). In that case they do indeed show which images failed; and the rest are accepted and can be processed.

I go to Track Submissions and click on Partially Failed to see which photos didn't pass and for what reason.

Veer / Re: Veer FTP Problem
« on: May 11, 2010, 09:48 »
I can upload through http... but one by one is an awesome pain!

I thought the same as you, so I switched on keep alive and 'tickle' for long period uploads, but even then, 7mb file takes less than a minute to ...erm ... almost complete

I did notice that it's an error native to IIS7 (can't seem to find anything similar on other FTP servers) but then again... don't really see a corbis site running on anything else :D
Yeah would be surprising if they used a non-Microsoft product :)

Any chance to upload via isyndica?

Don't know about your FTP client, would it be worth to try your luck with FileZilla? (Then we could at least verify whether the settings are the same everywhere)

BTW both 60k and 80-90k is very low if you have 8mb line (if you are talking download speed). I've got my ADSL updraded to VDSL recentely with upload speed around 1.5 Mbps (I mean real tested speed). The average upload speed to Veer is around 120 KB/s (used to be around 50KB/s when I had ADSL with 0.5Mbps upload)

My password gets accepted fine... but the FTP transfer just doesn't complete... confused :(
Are you able to upload via browser?

I did have a password issue couple weeks ago and raising support ticket didn't help much, but later Veer confirmed in their blog that one of their FTP server wasn't ok and they fixed it. Since then I don't have any issues, and anyway your problem seems to be different.

It could be not a bandwidth issue but latency...

Veer / Re: Veer Dash for Cash
« on: May 07, 2010, 17:28 »
Of the active contributors here, how many of you were exceeding 50% acceptance rates on an ongoing basis? Don't get me wrong, I think this is a good deal. I'm just wondering what the odds are of actually getting $1.40 per image accepted.
I only uploaded a portion of my portfolio before this campaign. I had 363 pics accepted and 61 rejected. 85% acceptance rate isn't bad at all...

198
seems to be the highest upload premium in microstock thus far...

I wonder if their acceptance rate will decrease 10 times...

199
I believe Michael said that few pages above - they ask us to set "discount" for all photos that are available on other microstock sites. "Standard" is for midstock and "premium" for macrostock pics not sold elsewhere on microstock.
