my images from V1 were fixed several months ago when I contacted support.

However using usual plain English words the search engine doesn't find anything when I try to use words after the 7th one. Even very recently uploaded pictures show the same result.

Perhaps Fotolia uses the words after the 7th one for relevance/more precise search; but they are definitely not used as the main key for search. At least for my pictures.

Yes I did see people in another forum saying their sales increased after they opted-out. My sales were rather flat while I was out.

Perhaps there is no direct link, but it's interesting to test the theories :)

653
I do it mainly not for promoting stock but more for getting referrals and some google ads clicks. Links in my signature.

I see many of you still think that Fotolia searches only first 7 keywords. That is not true.

Fotolia search engine search all of your keywords asociated with the image.

Sorry Chode but this is not correct statement. Perhaps situation is different for different images, but this is what I have found myself:
* I can find my images by using the first 7 keywords
* the same images are not found when I use other keywords
* "the first 7" means at the moment of upload, if you change word order later it seems to be not re-indexed
* I only tried it with several images, may be 10 or 20 so it might be different for some other files or for other contributors.

To give you a practical example, look at my image 6498934 (http://us.fotolia.com/id/6498934)

If you search by the first few words, i.e. "night railway station twilight" Fotolia finds this image.
However if you search by the words from the end of the list, e.g. "roof red reflections red blue dark" fotolia finds nothing at all.

For me istock has been consistently losing ground over the past year.  They used to be close to 50% of my earnings each month, but have gradually dropped to where they are 36% for the month of March.
same for me...

I followed the discussions on this subject for quite a while. My subscription sales at StockXpert were quite low so I opted out a couple of month ago with a light heart. However thinking about the idea that despite low value they increase my exposure I decided to try to opt in. I did it in the beginning of the month (today) to make a clear difference.

Personally I would prefer to keep it off - but it depends on the impact on sales. Will see at the end of this (or next) month.

They have been in touch with me too. You never know upfront whether they will be successful or not, but the good things are:

* they are macro-stock professionals
* they do have start capital
* they do have a plan and they don't rush to open "beta"
* they do listen to contributors very carefully

The main bad thing is that they are new while there are already quite big players around....

And one thing which I am not sure whether it's really bad or not is that they don't seem to have large enough start capital to plan for a massive marketing, but they plan selective targeted marketing. With the founders coming from macro-stock this could be not a bad thing if they already have a network of contacts in that market...

They are at the bottom of my list, but when I have some spare time (like a break at work between the meetings) I am uploading little by little.
P.S. LuckyOliver and Canstock are even lower in my list, so why not give Yay a try?

P.S. Condescending posts are not helpful, actual ways to contact him are.

My apologies. I didn't understand from your post that you were actually looking for a way to contact the person - I've got impression that you were just curious about what have happened.

As you already got an advise I will not repeat it here.

Another way to contact is via Dreamstime. This is his portfolio there - http://www.dreamstime.com/rmarmion_info
The way to contact is to write a comment under any image (there is no site-mail, but comments aren't visible to other visitors, only to photographer). However you need to register to be able to write comments.

why don't you ask that person directly?
And how would I do that? Do you have his phone number or email? I'm in the same boat as the person who made the original post on iStock. I had a photo in a lightbox for a project and now it's gone.
google is your friend :) I found the link to stockxpert portfolio of that person immediately.

There was mention in this thread that he moved to Bigstock, but why I don't know

Actually that thread is why I asked. He didn't "move" because he wasn't exclusive and was always on a lot of sites. It appears he was kicked off of iStock but that seems very strange for a diamond contributor.

Panthermedia.net / Re: Acceptance rate at Panthermedia
« on: March 23, 2008, 09:30 »
I havent yet uploaded many photos on panther, but so far my impression is that they accept more than average micro. Also, their rejections are very different from those at micro. Some of my railway station pictures were rejected (my own fault, they clearly stay in the rules that railway stations aren't accepted without a Property Release) and some people shots that were accepted by all micros (Panther rejected for reason "too many" or "not good enough"). Despite those few rejections in general they accept most of my pictures so far. Both digital and slide scans.

Aye, but the earnings should be taxed where they are generated.
No it's not correct. I am not sure about company profits, but for individual person the income taxes are paid in the country of main residence. I think it's quite the same for the companies with the place if their registration.

Sale tax is paid in the place where sale is made, but not the income tax. To make it more complex, VAT is paid in the country where buyer located. In real life when I buy something via internet some sellers charge me Belgian VAT but most don't (even within EU).

So in our case we give (for free!) the right to the agency to sell our pictures. And we supply them (for free!) our pictures. So why shell we charge VAT to the agencies if we don't sell anything at all?

663
Don't forget that formally we are not selling anything. Agencies sell our pictures because we gave them the pictures and the right to sell them. What we are getting is a commission which is completely different (from a legal point of view) from "selling" something.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Canon 5d mark II / 7D
« on: March 11, 2008, 16:49 »
I recently bought 40D to have as a backup with onboard flash and the new menu system and live view on it don't impress me at all.
I use liveview for precise focusing when taking tripod land/cityscape photos. Do really appreciate this feature a lot for this type of work.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: EOS 40D vs 400D?
« on: March 11, 2008, 15:43 »
I had 350D for 2 years. The price of 30D didn't justify the difference for me so I stayed with 350D. When 400D appeared it didn't justify the upgrade for me either. 5D was/is too expensive for my current level. So I stayed with 350D quite peacefully. However when 40D appeared I was among the first buyers - all together it was a perfect step forward from 350D. I use it since last September and didn't regret it a single time.

But your choice isn't the same, as you compare 400D vs 40D. It depends on how do you will use it, and how much do you shoot, and in what conditions. Also upgrade is different from first buy (I mean if budget allows buying a better camera first time is easier for yourself than upgrade from something already decent).

Talking about 5D vs 40D I have serious doubts it really worth the money. Don't get me wrong, 5D is really great camera, but it is several years old and is still quite expensive. 40D has a new generation sensor and a new generation CPU, and 14-bit processing, which 5D doesn't have. There were several tests revealing the quality of picture is quite the same for 40D and 5D (noise, colors etc). I am sure the successor of 5D would beat 40D, but I doubt it is worth to spend that much for 5D today.

Anyway, if you are looking for really high resolution and really nice portraits with shallow DOF you should look for medium format instead, the names like Hasselblad, Phase One etc :) just kidding

Here's hoping, although 15.3 is too small for an istock XXL.
15.3 is quite reasonable number taking into account 10-12 megapixel of cheaper models and 21 for Eos 1D (whatever Mark number it is). But this is still speculation as it has been for the last year.

I rarely get rejections on SS. And I don't prepare files specially for SS. Most of the time my files accepted at several other stocks are accepted by SS as well. Opposite isn't true, acceptance rate is much higher at SS than elsewhere.

This comes to my point I expressed earlier - make images of better technical quality and don't focus particularly on "SS acceptance". Focus on "microstock acceptance" instead...

Panthermedia.net / Re: Slow reviews at Panthermedia
« on: March 10, 2008, 07:08 »
yes it takes about couple of weeks - so what? If you upload daily after couple of weeks you will start getting images accepted daily as well. I don't see any problem with that.

since 17-Feb. Was attracted by Ron Chapple post :)

I like simple design too (you can check my site) but putting everything on just one page isn't truly simplicity in my opinion... and having many small pictures without any links doesn't help either - I would either link them to larger previews, or to the same images on a stock site.

this is my 3 cents :)

P.S. BTW any feedback/constructive criticism about my sites is welcome and appreciated (links in my signature)

Software - General / Re: Photoshop CS2 or CS3
« on: March 06, 2008, 06:22 »
Beware that the latest versions of Adobe Camera RAW are only supported by CS3. For example RAW files from Canon EOS 40D can't be processed with CS2...

Other than that there is some difference in advanced functionality - you can easily find it on adobe website where they provide side by side comparison. But if you are moving from version 6 this functionality is unlikely to be of great importance for you.

16-bit processing is already quite good in CS2.

Mostphotos.com / Re: MostPhotos playing with legal fire
« on: March 02, 2008, 07:10 »
There is a difference between editorial and commercial pictures in terms of copyright. Yes one can photograph from the public land the buildings and people located on the public land - and that can even be published without paying to people on the picture or to architect or to other right owners - but it can only be published non-commercially.

There is tendency lately to tighten the rules, and more and more people object when they see themselves on published photo - but in general in most countries so far it is acceptable to publish non-commercial pictures containing copyrighted material.

I agree that there is a lot of stupidity in very artificial copyright laws, and it has been abused more and more, but at the moment this is the way it is.

Coming back to the point of this thread - I think lack of any formal inspection at MostPhotos is a very bad idea. At least some basic check is really needed - otherwise a lot of crap is coming in, and copyrighted material not marked "editorial only".

673
I only had a few % from subscription, so I opted out.

674
I am new at MS but my first impression about rating system is also quite negative. Most pictures just stay un-noticed i.e. without any marks; and I have no doubts that any perfect picture will not stay long on top (if it ever get there) because it will receive a lot of not-perfect rating.

Flagging system by peers - with final decision made by MS staff members sounds to me as much better idea.

P.S. No inspection at all means so much crap images submitted :( I have serious doubts whether it will work successfully in a long term

675
Creativity aside, there are two specific things that many agencies, SS especially <...>, will deny for, that are aspects of many good photos <...> isolating the subject of the photo from the surroundings to a degree using DOF (out of focus denial).

I don't think SS really denies photos for shallow DOF and without other reasons. Just to give an example, these are few of my pics with blurred background:
