I am kind of forced to become graphics designer on the way. I have to learn how to use Photoshop and noise reduction software  >:(

It that the reason you have been limited to 5 a day, uploading everything rather than selective uploading?

I am a noob but was given this advice when I first used the forums!

You should not need noise reduction software if you are using the correct ISO and fast glass.

Photoshop should be used only slightly, like for tweeking levels, you should get it almost right in the camera.

So what that said to me was learn to use the camera rather than trying to fix it with post process.

No Offence taken, but as a noob I can only make decisions based on my small Portfolio, and translate this by a percentage to a "what if" scenario.

My Stats:

April to Date:
SS Portfolio 54 Images - 7 Downloads - $1.75
DT Portfolio 54 Images - 0 Downloads - $0.00
IS Portfolio 40 Images - 11 Downloads - $10.87

Since I Started in September:
SS Portfolio 54 Images - 227 Downloads - $76.70 (Inc: $20 EL)
DT Portfolio 54 Images - 29 Downloads - $25.95
IS Portfolio 40 Images - 71 Downloads - $67.27

I started to upload to other sites due to the rejection rate at IS, mainly copyright for a teeshirt and playing cards, which dented my acceptance ratio to 64%.

In hindsight IS is by far the best Revenue Per Image performer for me, even with the smaller portfolio, one cavaet is that my 2 best earners on IS, were rejected by DT and SS, that what makes me wonder what may have been if I just stuck with uploading to IS!

From today I am now on a 4 day week, so I will re-focus on photography for the free day  ;)

As a Noob

I started with IS, uploaded to about 8 sites, closed off 5 of these accounts now leaving IS, SS and DT.

With SS and DT I did have "immediate download gratification", but if your uploads stop the downloads stop, and I have found that with IS they slowly trickle with no "fizz and bang", and my images somehow do not get pushed to the last page by the top sellers and new images, due the the weighting of the best match no doubt.

The proposed Subscription Package from IS is a per credit basis which seems to be lost in some threads,  where as SS is a 25c per download payment with no information on the size of the download, the highest percentage of downloads for me on IS are Medium and Large average about 90c a download.

So this subscription package can only be a win win situation for me.

I stopped uploading after January, DT and SS bombed right out but IS has remained constant, making the IS Return Per Image well better.

I have read the argument it is better to have loads of cheap downloads, but I often wonder if I had not uploaded to SS how many of them downloads would have been made at IS instead.  ???

By the end of June I will only be uploading to IS, and any subscription downloads will count towards the next canister, and later exclusive status!  :)

General Stock Discussion / How do you find your Images?
« on: April 21, 2008, 16:06 »
I am new to stock tiny portfolio, but I was wondering how you find where your images were used, is it just luck, or the way you search online?

With Google there is another UK photographer and artist with the same name "David Cox", so this brings up loads of pages, search for Adeptris and it is mainly postings in forums, so any tips would help.

Hi

You say you get most in the camera and it is just the stray area's

I had the same problem and tried everything, this is the method I use and I now have a fair success rate on Isolations, my main stoppers now is "copyright patterns", and "focus not where we think it should be"

Well here is my isolation tutorial of workflow http://www.adeptris.co.uk/PS2Tutorial/tabid/136/Default.aspx

Hope it helps

Off Topic / Re: Finally my new Website is ALIVE

Nice smooth effect, but a little to much flash for me, I prefer sites with normal pages and flash for the gallery.

It is hard to get traffic to a website and flash makes it harder, the spiders and webcrawlers cannot read the content, so it hard to get up in the search engine ranking, where as some non dynamic pages can help.

But as a showcase where you can direct your own traffic it's quite good, one thing I would also say is look to see if your ISP can offer you web mail [email protected] would look a lot better and help with selling your brand and once you get used to logging on it is not to bad.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Prices reduced......
« on: February 27, 2008, 02:45 »
That sucks for many reasons

But lets compare that to any other business. Any huge store that wants to discount a product has to do that paying their share of the cut. What does a milk producer care about a store discount ? He has his price and as he is concerned they can give his milk for free after  they pay him his share.

Not quite right a lot of store promotions are normally at the cost of the vendor, if the store pays 60 for an Item that normally sells at 99, they do not pay the same in the 20% off sale, the vendor reduces the cost.

The milk Vendors contract will be so tight that they have no choice but to supply at the lower cost, and on a sale or return basis, if the want to supply the store, this de-risks the store for losses.

It will be written into the Istock agreement somewhere that Istock set the sales price and you get the percentage of that, and that they have the right to move the price point either way.

These are the rules of business and contributors are blinded by the "Member of the Community" on Istock that they forget that they are the vendor and Istock is a merchant / agent that protects its margin, often at the cost of the Vendor.

Stock is a fantastic business model, vendors supply the goods at no cost, you then dictate the sales price, you set and protect your margin and the amount you return to the vendor, based on the number of units sold.

Yippie I want to be a stock merchant!  ;D

ond SS because of keywords  - 5 photos because I included name of a lake in Slovenia, which isn't an english keyword

Hi

As regards SS you will see this comment so many times, read the rejection in full, it states words not in English, read on further it states not relevent keywords or Description.

So go back on your keywords and descriptions have another look, is each one relevent to the image you see,  the rejection can sometimes happen because of a place name, stock is a lot about non specific generic images and keywords, so a lake in slovenia is just a lake.

Looking at the Image Seren highlighted it is very specific to a region, however a shot of a couple of rowing boats or canoe's pulled up on the bank, and maybe a distant shoreline is more stock, because it could have been taken and used anywhere.

Hi I am new to Stock Photography last year but leaning fast, I have learned quite a few tips about isolation, and have settled on a particular work flow.

I have posted a step by step overview on the process to pick up them stray area's, I use it all the time now and have halted the fall in my acceptance rate, as I have received a lot of help, I now hope this will help others, sort of payback.

There are some more examples in my gallery and on Istock (Adeptris)
