Phil - have you DA at istock??

YOur not at SS?  Is this because you dont want to sell for 25c.

Yup I have DA'ed my entire portfolio at IS. It cost me a lot of time and in the end, money to get it finished.

I am at SS but sales are not great for me there as of late. I upload when I can but these days you don't see the big spikes when you upload 20 or more files. SS was third last month for me behind FT and IS. This month will depend on sales at DT since I have a lot of higher level files there now.

I am not sure you should start making serious decisions about this business with only 38 images online at IS. You have a long long way to go...

I have 2800+ images at IS and my sales have been slowly declining now for a few months despite uploading what I can (I hate the upload limits and procedure!). My suspicion ever since the DA'ing fiasco and Best Match algorithm changes is that the search engine is favoring exclusives. I could be wrong but there is still much shuffling to be done in the industry and until things smoothen out, I would just go with the flow.

I suspect that this month IS will come in third overall for me, with the new prices at DT pushing it in to #2 spot, still with FT #1.

General - Top Sites / Re: Feb earnings breakdown
« on: March 02, 2007, 11:24 »
Haven't got time to do the maths but I do know that IS is getting very frustrating for me; falling downloads, annoying upload limits and procedure.

Fotolia continues to be my highest earning site, followed by IS (despite it's flaws), then SS and DT. DT sales have slowed quite a bit for me but hoping revenues pick up with the new prices.

Feb was a pretty good month for BigStock and StockXpert. 123rf still languishing behind these but in front of CS.

Thanks for the heads-up. I will just keep uploading as normal I guess and keep my fingers crossed that one of mine gets to be the millionth. To be honest, I am more excited about the price increases. Bored of seeing $0.50 or $1 for images!!

« on: February 13, 2007, 03:49 »
Hi Steve and welcome to the forums. I for one have had no negative experiences with rejections at StockXpert and I am excited to hear about the partnership with JupiterImages.

For me, sales are pretty volatile and I have great days and really bad days. To me this shows a variation in the number of buyers that are coming to the site and I hope this will stabilise to give more stable sales.

I must say, sometimes the reviews are so quick they happen just after uploading! Not sure who you have chained to a computer there but do let them out once in a while!  :) Maybe when they get hungry they start rejecting stuff!

StockXpert.com / Re: How is StockXpert doing for you?
« on: February 11, 2007, 00:39 »
StockXpert is not great for me, with a total of over 3000 images on the site in two separate portfolios. Each portfolio normally hits at least $100 per month but this is slightly variable. I seem to get lots of views compared to other sites but for me, it is the 6th site after the usual Big 5.

New Sites - General / Re: is it possible to make a living?
« on: January 26, 2007, 20:10 »
To make a living at this I think you will need to grow your portfolio to 4000 images pretty quickly and shoot a lot of people or create some quality illustrations. At the moment I do the former and when I have some time (which is probably never) I will learn how to use Illustrator. My combined portfolios are reaching 3500+ and the income is probably getting to the point where it is stable and almost enough that I could not do any other work in month if I really wanted to take a break. However, there is a big difference between an income you can live on and an income you can REALLY live on (i.e one that will pay the mortgage, pay the car, pay the bills, upgrade equipment etc...)

Yeah, why did Thursday suck so badly? It was almost like a Sunday for me. Good to see it pick up again on Friday but now we have the probably slow weekend to look forward to. Being a microstocker makes Monday morning so much easier!!

I have lots of people in my CN but rarely have time to look at their portfolio's. If I had a spare moment I might just do that but when do serious microstockers have any spare time???  ;D

Adobe Stock / Re: How is FT for everyone these last two weeks
« on: January 17, 2007, 23:21 »
FT is my best selling site for last few months, having overtaken IS - my sales dropped there with the whole DA fiasco. I have more EL sales at FT than anywhere else and just yesterday I had two EL sales for $41 each!!

However, it seems to take newer contributors longer to get a good rate of sales from FT so all I can say is stick with it, it will definitely be worth it in the long run.

General Stock Discussion / Re: What do you think about this?
« on: January 15, 2007, 19:54 »
I signed up for Photographersdirect and still get their photo request emails. Chances are, I could've submitted to about 1% of their requests and even then I would not be certain of selling the shot. They are after RM style images in most cases, which would require a large investment in terms of time/models/location and to do that without the security of a sale is madness.

I discounted doing any work for PD a long time ago and do not regret for a single second the decision to sell to microstock sites rather than them. Let the whinge and whine - who cares! It's not like they are going to save the world (or the industry)!

wow, thats gonna take a lot of inspecting...I was wondering why some of mine were taking so long to get through the queue.

Fashions change pretty quickly (just watch some of the early Friends episodes!) so I think in 10 years, a lot of people shots are going to look dated. Oh well, at least I don't have to keep coming up with new concepts. In a couple of years I'll just have to reshoot everything I've done before!

« on: December 19, 2006, 21:54 »
The change in pricing at BigStock did not have the dramatic effect on my earnings as previously imagined. December is looking a slow month there but guess just have to enjoy Christmas and not worry about earnings too much!

141
As most agencies increase the prices of their single image sales, I hope the subscription models take note and increase their price and therefore increase the commission to photographers. I too don't like the 25c commissions, at DT, SS or at CS.

I started uploading to microstock sites in Feb 2005 so I will be celebrating my two-year anniversary soon :)

I like it - especially the second picture from the left at the top  ;D thanks for including that one

I just had my first EL sale at DT. A $25 commission for a print sale :)

Dreamstime.com / Re: Is DT for sale?
« on: December 12, 2006, 10:23 »
I don't mind as long as they don't go and change things in the way IS did after being taken over. If it increases revenues the all well and good. If the new parent company puts pressure on for DT to just have exclusive photographers then it's going to get messy.

Never had a problem with them personally. Submit good stuff and they will accept it! I find them less fussy than IS and SS.

I had my first Print sale there and got $25 so having a good month - definitely better than last month.

Adobe Stock / Re: I'm going Exclusive!
« on: December 07, 2006, 12:54 »
IS has always been my best earner but it wasn't last month and it's not going to be this month. I have always had the utmost respect for IS but after what has happened over the last few weeks, I have lost much of that respect. I am spending far too much time trying to DA a portfolio of over 2600 images but I'm still not really sure on what constitutes a phrase and what I should be using. The way in which it way implemented was not properly thought through at all and the repercusions are immense.

For me Fotolia is my favourite and highest earning site now and the Extended License sales there are a huge factor in not going exclusive at IS. As an exclusive member at IS, I would not earn as much as I do now, nowhere near. And things are too unstable there.

As for Getty, it's a whole different ball-game. Yes it's got a great reputation but being exclusive at IS is not the only way in to Getty or the RM game. I have recently done some RM work for a publishing company, some of which might end up on Getty/Corbis anyway.

So for now, I am happy being 99.9% non-exclusive

I had some nice shots taken in Sydney recently which I thought were too nice to go for $1. Thought I would see how they go as exclusive images on FT.

Whereas normally you have to set the price between $1 and $1 (so no option) as an exclusive image, I can set the price to be $1 - $15 for M and thus the prices for L and XL are a multiple of that. I have set to $15 so commissions will be much on par to an EL. If I get a sale that is.
