« on: November 20, 2012, 01:32 »
From which phones are mobilestock pics being accepted?
iPhone4/5 and ... ?

Edited because for no good reason I put 'cameras' in the SL and my question.

I believe one good phone for stock is the Nokia 808 with 41MP camera and Carl Zeiss optics. If the image will be PP correctly and downsized to about 8-10MP the end result will be fine.

I have a question regarding RM sales:

Is OK to upload on RM sites files that are in sale on RF agencies?

Typical response. In some sense they are right, in some they are wrong. Evolution destroyed their business and it is understandable that those who were not willing to move on are very bitter (I used to be one of those 8 years ago). Nevertheless even evolution sweeps away some good things too. Nowadays I live off Micro but although see its downsides...mainly I critisize (ATM lol) that it killed originality and art.

Good reply!  ofcourse they are right, ofcourse micro has killed of the monopoly we once had. I just hope the Getty plan of slowly killing off micro will work out,  good for us bad for the happy-snapper. When its done, the agencies I want to see left are DT and IS and possibly SS if they skip the subs.
Micro is a perfect plan for the hobby guy but terrible for the full time photographer and I dont think anybody can deny that, the money side is a differant story.
Micro is responsible for putting quantity before quality, resulting in bad photography which is attracting non-quality concious and bad buyers with a " give it to me free" flee-market attitude.

Recently, I was blasted by another for photographer when I told him that my income is from the microstock companies. He told me that I am nothing more than a 'Penny Stocker' and have ruin the real world of photographers. And than ask if I was 'Polish' by origin because I work for nothing willing to take a nickel for my work! Rather than try to defend myself I walked away...

Yes , stock photography as a job kill the art photography. As a former Art/artistic photographer I feel that myself . But in majority of cases art photography don't pay my bills... so i adapted. For some photographers  the personal pride is above the white envelopes that came with the mail ( bills).

It seems like whatever I upload, stuff that I check and double check at 100% is being rejected for "does not meet our desired level of aesthetic quality."

Have I all of the sudden become a really bad photographer or are other contributors finding the same results?

Is just you... i have 95% acceptance ratio on FT.

$204-208 millions projection for 2013... that means one thing: increased sales and revenue ( even at the same commissions ).

Microstock stable or not?
It seems that there is a strong assumption in this thread that
those "other" jobs are stable and secure.
Really?

1 week... as any regular image

ja ja, you can always invest in gear.
There is always better and newer gear being let loose on the market.

If you choose Canon or Nikon doesnt matter, both can produce quality far above what is needed at microstock.
But it is worth to remember that the payback per file is very low and it can be hard to earn back an investment.

For me? I produce cheap files with cheap equipment. That means an old Nikon d 200 and a 18-200 mm lens and it also means that when I drop them on the floor so they break, I buy a new old d 200 and a new old 18-200.

If you want to invest, I suggest you invest in lights and software: Topaz, Helicon, Photomatix. There is much more money to be earned in mastering software than hardware.

I invested in a 7D in april... the investment/money were recuperated in two months. the sigma lens ( 50mm f/1.4 EX HSM) in two weeks (all out of stock). i have lights transmitters and other gadgets for controlled light conditions. I do microstock for more than 2 years now and 80% of my stock revenue were reinvested in gear/ shooting sessions. Now finally the 2 years work starting to pay out.

I save now to arrange a studio ( dedicated mainly to stock).
Regarding software/hard i use a HP workstation with a good monitor and Photoshop CS5 with some useful plugins ( including Topaz Denoise)

The only thing that remains is the camera.... stay with canon or go with the Nikon.

Never any bugs
never any glitches.
never any search-changes.
never any lowering of commissions/ percentages.
never any selling out or take overs.
never any subs sales
never any problems at all
never any contributors / buyers leaving.

I.m sure you talking about IS; not all the stock agencies( i meant the ones that matters).

263
Stick to whatever youre used to. Canon btw according to rumors might soon be launching a 34MP cam. I would wait actually.

According to the same rumors.... in a 1D type body. :)) at a astronomical price.

264
5d mark II save the 1500 dollars and get a new lens, or get a D800E they look pretty nice.

I exclude from start the 5D2 ( i can't go back to the 9 points AF after using 7D for 8 months) I personally lean toward Nikon.

265
Hi ,

I use Canon SLR's ( both film and digital) from 10 years now... Currently i use a 7D with 17-40mm L , 100mm f/2.8 , Sigma 50mm f/1.4, I want to upgrade on FF and the obvious direction is 5Dmk3 ( the new 6D I believe is a joke).
BUT I can not overlook the lately Nikon announcements like D800 and D600; especially D600 ... The Nikon D600 and D800 beats the 5D3 in EVERY aspect regarding IQ ,noise lvl , resolution ( where in stock matters )at base ISO. Let's face it who needs  high fps, excellent weather sealing, etc. for controlled condition stock photography???

What will be your advice? go for 5D3 or sell everything and jump the ship to Nikon??

266
How idiot you must be to download somebody else work ( the best sellers) and resell the same identical work, claiming that is yours... ???

I am also feeling the hurt this week with sales at istock. What gets me is their attitude with 'well, our financials are in line with our expectations'. But I always think to myself that if exclusives are complaining then there is definitely something terribly wrong at istock.

Good morning ....  ;)

Like majority of the full timers says... once you drop your regular job you will produce more photos/illustrations at better quality... this mean in many cases more revenue more quickly.

I personally save money ''as a backup'' for the time i will make the jump.

@Anyka ''port starting in the early years, like 2006, not 2012 or 2013''

Not necessarily, i started in 2010. Course the sum you need to make a decent living out of stock depends from people to people...

I don't think he said he went from 800 to 6800 in 2 years.  He's in microstock for 6 years now, and after 6 years, he has 6800 files in microstock (not particularly on Istock).  I started in 2006 too, with a fulltime job as a secretary, and now I have between 3900 (Istock) and 6300 (Bigstock) on micro.  So yes, it's super-possible.  I'm fulltime since January, but my port did not grow more than usual the last 10 months.  I thought it would, but it didn't because my commissioned work grew faster than expected.

See... she can put a link to his port... Without worrying somebody will try to copy her.... Good job Anyka; i will ''follow'' you soon as a full timer.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Slow November
« on: November 13, 2012, 15:58 »

DT - slow month
FT - very slow month
DP - average (small earner)
SS - slow at the beginning of nov. but the last two days were fantastic with consistant EL's and big SOD's.
123RF - above average until now.

....biggest disappointment is FT  this month( my 2nd earner ).

Ahh thanks, Oct. was a good month for me but this is really strange

are you an exclusive?

Sorry to tell you... but as as a full time photographer EXCLUSIVE on IS is a very, very risky job this days. Hope your earnings will catch up this month; judging the last two years changing on IS ( sales, commissions, management)  nothing good is on the horizon regarding this agency.

What seems to be very , very odd is the fact that somebody  came on the forum claiming that is making 8k/month and  no portfolio visible on any agency for us to see... I don't say that the topic is a joke or impossible to grow that much in  a short period of time... but  no portfolio visible let me think that all this topic is ''fake''...

No offense SIFD but I'm little skeptical.....  ;)

Maybe he has the best, most crazy and unbelievable niche and doesn't want to show everybody.
Of course non of us here would copy anything after knowing that he earns 8k ;)

First of all why copying somebody's work???  And if is afraid he my be copied .... why copying somebody that make 8k/month when we have the top 10 microstokers  and others with very high volume sales ... Don't mention Leaf , Lisa and other successful contributors active on this forum with visible portfolios... ???

I personally believe this theory doesn't stand up.

Nop... in my case everything goes up... i upload around 70-100 new images/month and my earnings are increasing with around $80-100/month.

General Stock Discussion / Printed items for resale but no EL's
« on: November 13, 2012, 06:59 »
Hi,

I just came across a website selling large prints (wall murals ) with some of my vintage maps of various cities and places... the problem is that some of the maps does not had been sold via extended licenses ( that allow the buyer to use the image in items for resale)....

site: http://www.eazywallz.com/maps/

Despite the fact that are PD images I'm 100% sure the images that i refer are mine ( i recognize the PP style, mistakes in PP, framing , cropping ,lightning, WB ,etc.)

What should i do in this situation?
