Print on Demand Forum / Re: Worth starting ?
« on: January 26, 2012, 07:05 »
Thank you guys, now things are looking a bit clearer to me.

Yes, these channels seem to be rather time-consuming.
Now I am thinking about hiring a friend who would use my photos to design a bunch of different 'crappy' and teenage commercial products there.
Promotion still looks vague and I have to dig deeper.

mtkang - thank you for nice words. I don't consider myself an expert but if anyone got any questions I am always willing to help.

best,
Michal

Google Ads or something ?

Thank you rinder,

Yeah it looks like a different market, but the more I analyze it the more I think that with a bit of adjusting and adapting it may work hmm....

I have many plain landscapes etc and I have just spotted that zazzle and cafepress also sell pictures for posters and as you say on walls. Then there seems not to be that much work on desinging the products in this case. Just upload and voila.

Hi guys,

I am a stock contributor with some years of experience, you can view my portfolio e.g. here http://www.shutterstock.com/gallery-64681p1.html

I am constantly seeking new venues to licence my photos and just recently have found out about creating products with desings/images on them.
Do you, more experienced in that field, think it would be worth the time to create products with my kind of stock portfolio ?

Thank you for any support!
Michal

Hey,
does Light Burner work for you ?
I can't connect to the ftp.

M.

181
Doesn't work for me - I don't see any camera neither in Firefox nor Chrome or IE

182
I don't have a problem with the pricing, if you have 3000 images online you should be making plenty to pay $50.00 a month.

I just can't get the software to work, it tries to process files but fails shortly in. Tried on Windows 7 (2 comps) and Windows Vista. I've already e-mailed him about it.

It's not about 'making plenty'. Personally I would just prefer to spend $500 (a year price) on extra photoshot, flash light or even short cool holidays,.
$500 a year is EXTREMELY exaggerated for something yeah cool and convenient, but not necessary. Even though I don't get funky graphs and exact numbers, I spend maximum 15 minutes browsing those 4 sites (about 2500 images porfolio) to see which pictures and sessions were successful.

183
Well :) I hope pricing structure makes the software very affordable to most contributors regardless of portfolio size. At the same time it allows me to make better support and include more and more valuable features in future.

Actually it is way too much for most contributors I would say. 500$ a year is like giving away one month revenue from one of the Big 4.
Consider also that you are offering stats from only 4 sites AND you virtually do not bear any extra expenses anymore.
I am a Fotolia Gold, doing pretty well on Shutterstock and working with a few other agencies, but would not like to spend more then 50$ a year on such program, however cool it is.

184
JEEZ! last night had 10 sales at ALAMY!! just insane best month ever with more than 10k oh god!

come on man...  can't be true ! ;)

185
March was BME for me in my 4 years stock career ;). Even though I have not uploaded too much, it all went great, probably due to the fact that I a very spring/summer oriented portfolio.
Soon I am reaching gold on Fotolia, too ;)

Cheers

probably Not. LOL
and That Number was the last i heard about a year ago. reviewing is a pretty transient Job. very underpaid and the burnout factor and turnaround is very high.

I can't believe it's less than $0.5 per image. If so, it would be a third world salary considering the type of job (non-stop in front the computer).

I'll try again?

"I do not want to sell through that site, just a gallery and a reference for my clients and models."

Both are FREE, both have controls on who sees what.

Google has a free Picassa albums -  http://picasa.google.com/ 1024 MB free

MSN  http://photos.live.com/

Yes, it would be perfect in that sense. BUT, I do not want ads, references to google or msn. It's got to be a pro looking site, however simple and neat. My potential models and clients will be reading info about me and viewing my sample pictures, so a nice flash gallery is needed.
Sorry for ambiguity from my side.

All you need is a WordPress Blog with any of the free Gallery plugins. Easy to operate and maintain, plus WordPress has built in SEO.

Easier said than done.
Still struggling to find the most suitable option. Smugmug seems nice and I am closest to choose it. 300$ for not too a sophisticated customization is rather a lot, though.

Thank you guys for your help. I feel I need to clarify it - I do not want to sell through that site. I has to be a neat, pro-looking photographer's website with flash elements (gallery). That's why all free services like flickr, picasa rule out. I also do not need a huge storage limit, since after some consideration I decided to select about 200 the best pictures. What is more, they will be about 600x900px, so not a full size.
It is all for beautiful, PRO preview purposes plus information for my clients and models and about me section.
I can spend up to 300$ for a new design or original/unique template + the ability to update gallery with pictures' miniatures whenever I want AND be able to change some info about projects/news. Host and domain costs not included.

Not essentially for free. I would be able to pay for a bit of originality and no ads.
Waiting for suggestions...

General Stock Discussion / own website/gallery for a greenhorn

First of all I apologize if this is not a proper subforum to ask this question but could not find a better one.

So, eventually I've decided to set up my own website featuring my stock portfolio. I do not want to sell through that site, just a gallery and a reference for my clients and models.
Unfortunetaly my skills and knowledge in this topic are close to zero so I need kind of a website/gallery generator, preferably the online one. My website should be neat, simple, but original and stylish with Flash elements allowed (a gallery). I will need to upload let's say about 1000 miniatures which a representative part of my stock portfolio, successively adding more.

Could you recommend any companies/websites that offer such a service ?

Thank you,
Michal

Marinini and Pixart -> your ideas seem very plausible and DOABLE.
Maybe consider creating a new thread in the general forum ? Here they may get unnoticed...

Students, scrapbookers, scout flyer designers, micro-businesses, personal bloggers, etc.
Did you really actually saw these kind of usages? There are few probably but I never saw them personally what I saw was Microstock-Images in advertising campaign of Dell, Apple and so on that easily did cost a 5 to 6 figure sum but the pictures they used just did cost a few bucks.
I think you are largely underestimate that buyers are willing to pay if the pictures really fit their demands.
I don't have a problem that students would use my images for a buck or free but they are not the main buyers of Microstock-Images.

Totally agree.
The belief that microstock images are mainly used by students, bloggers and microbusinesses etc is as airy fairy and irrational an idea as those 'earn gazillions from microstocks with photos on your hard disc' blogs.
Microstock images are used on TV, billboards, ads of serious companies who don't even care to buy an extended licence.

The biggest drop is with silvers - from 31 to 25%. They comprise the majority of fotolia contributors. Why don't I wonder... ?

Screw em dude, it's their loss.

No, it's not their loss. They won't feel it, he unfortunetaly will.

Hope everything will be eventually OK.

I see why someone wouldn't want to share information, but I do not see why they would want to frequently share that they do not want to share information. Why come in to a thread and write; "I do not want to answer your question".  ???
Ditto

Regarding the main topic; I would mix and split, and upload smaller batches. You never know when you'll meet a happy reviewer or an angry one.
Reviewing is not the case, the are of good quality, it's rather about optimizing visibility of such a big amount of pictures.
Yeah, perhaps I will give it a shot and split them into 5-10 batches of mixed pictures. Hope it'll work.

Nisern, we are all competitors here to some extent.

To some extent we are indeed. But for me it's a friendly competition and I would definitely not compare it to normal job market.

No, because what I am asking for is a basic thing which would not harm your business

No, I'm saying it does add up.  A little nugget here, a piece there, a tidbit here.  The bits and pieces that make up a successful microstock strategy put together could enable competitors.

Anyhoo, you can do your own work, by just viewing portfolios by date of people you think are doing well.

I know, it's a horrible, terrible thing to want to not give it all away, but...

Far be it from me to do my work by just viewing porfolios by date of people I think are doing well, as you unfortunately stated it. I also have never wanted any ego boosted strategy for microstock, even a bit or piece. Just asked a question about, yeah, strategy but about smth veeery general and sharing this info would not harm anyone's business nor enable competition I think.

Thank you guys,
what I've noticed is that big fishes like yuri do mix their photos while sending to Shutterstock for instance. Sorting by newest first gives the result of totally different photos standing side by side.
From one point of view sending about 15 photos depicting starfish and shells on white would fill the search result only with your photos and a buyer would maybe download the whole batch? On the other hand sending 5 batches consisting of 3 photos would make them more 'individual' , stand out and noticeable for a buyer. It's my dilemma ... ;)
