New Sites - General / Re: ShotShop Anyone?
« on: January 12, 2013, 11:25 »
Shotshop used to be an excellent site when I started in 2008. All photos used to cost 30 , the commission was 15 and they sold quite well. In fact they were one of my favorite sites in my early days, in a good month RPI was really good.
They probably faced tough competition from microstock sites, lowered the prices, introduced commission levels, etc. Since their new website went online (I guess somewhere around 2010) I hardly sell anything there, but honestly I haven't been uploading there since then.

Once you reminded me of them, I might start uploading again, since those days the quality of my images has increased significantly, maybe shotshop is still alive.

Informing influential photo blogs is a good idea too - places like Photo District News etc. are always looking for ways to generate traffic.

Nonsense, you would only be driving traffic to Google Images. Also some smaller agencies might pick up the idea and this would become standard. I am afraid evacuation from the Getty ship is the only option, otherwise they may kill your life's work with a few mouseclicks. If you deal with thieves in the end you may lose everything. You are no longer the real owner of the photos that you submitted to Getty.

129
But ... if they damage us and/or our IP ... aren't they also damaging themselves and their business equally, if not far more?

It seems they are slowly abandoning the business of selling images and entering the business of stealing intellectual property. Theft by deception: use of deception to obtain control over other people's property. Exclusives don't have any control over their property, cannot even give it away for free, whereas Getty can do anything with it, can even give it away. The actual owner is now Getty, who achieved this through legal tricks.

One thing about thieves: if you do business with thieves long enough, in the end you may lose everything that you had. I am afraid somethingpretentious is right, with a few mouseclicks they can destroy one's life's work.

Looking at the quality of those images it is almost impossible to believe that Getty really did sell a 'give away for free and forever' license ... for just sixty paltry dollars to Google! It's utterly insane. Even at $6000 per image (with $1200 going to the artist) I'm not sure many of them would have agreed to it.

We don't know the details of this scam. I suspect there might be some additional compensation involved, e.g. Google pays ridiculously low image royalties, but pays a commission to Getty for "doing the selection of the images" or whatever, or offers them credits to be spent on AdSense etc.

I find it pathetic that iStock needs a ****ing "lawyer" in their forum. If they were innocent they would not need a lawyer to explain their actions. I don't know any other agency that needs a lawyer to communicate with their contributors on a regular basis.

Thank you for compiling the list Sean.

Very sad news indeed. My condolences to the family.

We were contacts on flickr. I was a big fan of Stephen's aviation images.

I guess istockrefferer.com would be a cool domain name for this site :) It's still available:)

Congrats sharpshot, it is a very good clip indeed.
Nice to see that Microsoft buy from Clipcanvas, which is a very fair agency.

All of my IPTC data comes through in lowercase so I have to manually edit the title and description.  Is that just me?...

I have the same problem. Very annoying.

Yeah, it sucks especially if one has place names in descriptions.

Racephoto, your timelapse videos are very good. I like the dandillion very much, the other ones are very moody, kind of eerie. The clouds look like in a horror movie, the one with the Moon is an interesting idea.
But sharpshot is right, why bother with 720 when 1080 is the 'standard resolution' today?
Isn't it like shooting S or M for istock?

My guess is: they're a Fotolia partner using their API.

« on: February 01, 2012, 15:29 »
And how do you all keep your spirit that you believe that your picture can anyone buy?

Well, if the buyers can't find your photos, they will never buy them and you will be waiting very long.
I had a brief look at your portfolio. Your tiger illustration is very nice, but it doesn't have "tiger" in the keywords.
In fact, all the keywords for this image seem to be automatic keywords added by the site.
How should the buyers find your tiger?

Editorial is dead for contributors at IS. They will allow us to sell editorial photos only as long as they haven't covered that subject with their content.  Then they push us to the back, especially non-exclusives.
Move on, forget about IS editorial, it just doesn't make any sense, it is unsustainable :P
I have just a few editorial pics on IS, now I send everything to RM agencies.

Canon / Re: Canon 100-400mm
« on: January 17, 2012, 08:52 »

Yes, I know the IS-tripod fact, but there are situations when IS may be needed on tripod, especially when shooting HD video. The biggest problem of 5dmkII is that video is started with the set button, there is no other way. Pressing the button will shake the camera, no matter how gentle you do it.

Why do you use the set button? I use that Canon remote control that costs about 15 .
If you are in movie mode pressing the button on the remote will start the recording.

As for 100-400 mm, I love mine. It is razor sharp, though at 400 mm indeed softer.

Computer Hardware / Re: Advice on monitors requested
« on: January 03, 2012, 13:55 »
I think the best site with monitor reviews is www.prad.de.
The reviews are very detailed and technical.
There is an English version of the site, but it seems that the German language version has somewhat more content.
