General Stock Discussion / Fotolia Extended License Price
« on: April 02, 2012, 14:13 »
Hi,

Just noticed none of my files are for sale with extended licenses on Fotolia. Their customer support said I had to name the price.

Could anyone give the going rate? I'm assuming before commission.

Cheers,

Terry

If this is an invitation for some portfolio critique

Thanks for the feedback. I'm just in the process of systematically uploading and working through subjects etc. From doing this I'm starting to learn what makes a good microstock image. Still a long way to go though.

General Stock Discussion / Canstock no view/sales
« on: January 26, 2012, 15:59 »
Hi,

I've had around 150 images on canstock for a few months now and I've had hardly any view and no sales. I have the same collection across other sites and have seen sales and good views on them.

Wondering if anyone finds them to be slow, or maybe its just my images? This is my portfolio with them https://www.canstockphoto.com/swellphotography

I have posted this before a few months back but the consistent lack of views has got me stumped.

Cheers,

Terry

General Stock Discussion / Re: Your plans, for 2012 ?
« on: January 20, 2012, 15:52 »
I'm trying for 1000 photos uploaded on average by the end of the year. I made this target last year when I was just contributing to Alamy and wasn't really focusing on microstock; and failed.

This year I'm more organised. I'm going to plan 52 subjects to photograph twice a week, organizing all the bits I need for the shoots before hand. I'll process during the week (couple of hours a night). Also want to get accepted to Shutterstock (really struggling with this).

So far I've stuck to it!!

Why don't you buy another SB 600?

I'm starting out and trying to do things cheap until I can prove I'm able to sell some pictures. I'm using a D200.

Get the Lumo Pro LP160.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'm checking out the website now. Don't suppose anyone knows of a UK seller?

Has anyone heard of the YN460-II. Found it on amazon for 50ish.

Cheers,

Terry

Because you are talking Commander it looks like you are wanting to use Nikon CLS, and that gets expensive no matter what. Your best bet is to forget all that, learn to shoot manual, and then you can use any unit at all, from expensive high powered strobes to $20 midi slaves.

I'm a bit confused. I don't want to use the TTL stuff, I want to set the flashes manually. What I want is to use the on camera flash to trigger the other slave flashes. I don't have pocket wizards or anything like that. I've had a look around but can't get a clear answer. I'm a bit confused with the terms.

I definitely don't want to use the auto settings, I like manual. I just want them all to trigger together without having to buy another trigger system.

Cheers,

Terry

Well to bring things down a few notches: After my first month of microstock I have a grand total of $1.52 earnings over 5 downloads!! Probably have an average of 50 pics on each site.

I got rejected from SS for the second time. All due to limited commercial value. Everyone seems to have great sales from them. It might be a measure of my progress if I can start producing the sort of images that have commercial value on their site.

For what its worth there are a few graphs on my blog www.swellphotographyuk.blogspot.com

See what happens this month!

General Photography Discussion / Best Nikon slave flash unit?
« on: September 22, 2011, 09:24 »
Hi,

I'm trying to setup my home studio (on a budget :)). I have one sb-600. I'm looking to add another flash to use as a slave. I use the built in flash as the commander and want two flashguns as slaves. It will only be used in a home studio so doesn't need to be packed with features.

Could anyone recommend a Nikon, or Nikon compatible flash that I could use as a slave without shelling out too much.

Cheers,

Terry

General Photography Discussion / Re: Lighting setup book/resource?

By the way the strobist blog and the guessthelighting blog are great! The books look good too. I'll try some experiments from the blogs before buying any books.

Thanks for all your help. I'll check them out.

I know there is no substitute for just taking pictures and experimenting, but I really want a bit of theory to guide my experiments and make the process a bit more efficient.

Thanks again,

Terry

General Photography Discussion / Lighting setup book/resource?
« on: September 20, 2011, 14:48 »
Hi,

Could anyone suggest a great book for learning about home studio lighting for product shots, concept and creative images? I heard once of a book consisting of a load of images, each displayed alongside a diagram of lighting setup and exposure details etc. Sounds like the sort of thing I'm looking for but can't find anything like it on amazon.

I've experimented a fair bit but need some clear instruction to gain confidence in creating a shot.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Cheers,

Terry

General Stock Discussion / No Views at Canstock
« on: September 19, 2011, 07:38 »
I've had my pictures on Canstockphoto for a week now and have no views on any of the 40 odd pictures there. I find it hard to believe that none of the images have shown up on a search once.

Could there be a problem, or is just nobody is looking at my images?

Cheers,

Terry

Cool,

The cityandthemountains one is my blog.

The http://www.helpster.de/themen/kartoffeln is mine though. Thanks. Do you search using the filename on your computer or the istock title/?

Cheers,

Terry

How do you find out where your picture has been used. I sold a couple of small images on Istock, would be cool to know where they have appeared.

Newbie Discussion / Re: How to improve visits in fotolia
« on: September 16, 2011, 07:28 »
Hi,

I'm the same. I have a collection of 40 odd pictures with Fotolia (http://www.fotolia.com/p/200973871) and they each only have 2-4 views after a few weeks. The same pictures on other sites have much more. Do they class a view as an actual click on you image (like an Alamy zoom), whilst the others class a view as appearing amongst the other images in a search?

Also does anyone know how to add keywords to a picture already accepted by Fotolia. I went to edit and can move keywords up and down, but can't input new ones?

Cheers,

Terry

Newbie Discussion / Re: New here
« on: September 13, 2011, 17:00 »
Hi,

I'm new. I've been messing around with stock for a few years, now I'm starting a project to give microstock a disciplined go over a few years. I want to try and establish a modest income after a few years.

I started a blog a few days ago to keep a record of my progress and to get some advice. Really glad to find this site, can't wait to have a good look around here and learn what it takes.

http://swellphotographyuk.blogspot.com/

I wonder how many people here make a full-time income from microstock, and how long it took them to get there?

Peace out,

Terry
