General Stock Discussion / Re: Arrogance abounds at istock
« on: May 26, 2011, 15:35 »
Frankly, I'm surprised Lobo didn't delete the thread completely after leaving his "good luck" message for couple of minutes.

The sad part about the frog is, it was accepted on Bigstock, Fotolia, Dreamtime, Canstock and 123RF.

Go figure.
Really??? Wow...

103
Human eye is about 550 Mpix.... I mean, a human eye can't really be translated to Mpix, but when we compare the ability of a human eye to see details, it's similar to 550Mpix camera.

Don't get discouraged. Just find some tutorials. You can't go on like this, not knowing basic stuff as "image size". If you use Photoshop, go to:

You need more light from the front. They look just a bit soft. Lighten them up a bit, and reduce the size to a minimum.

106
And always reduce the image size to a minimum for the application. It can help a lot.

I'm trying to take emotion out of this, but what do you mean is it a joke?

I'm sure Sean thinks the isolation is a joke. Look at your edges. Maybe you posted the wrong version of the image

108
Skateboarder has noise all over dark areas. The girl has noise too. Lighten up the face a bit. I can't believe you submitted the frog so terribly isolated. And it is noisy too.
All your images are taken at ISO 200, which is unacceptable in most cases. Lower ISO to 100.
First two images are very good regarding subject and the compostition. Find online video tutorials about isolating objects.

Lol, I got used to it. Serbia is almost always excluded from country lists, or sometimes represented as Yugoslavia, or even Serbia & Montenegro (countries that don't exists anymore)

Veer is incredibly slow for me. I wanted to post that before, but I felt embarrassed that I'm selling there only 1-2 images per month. There are even months without sales.

Who the , needs a sale in this Micro-scopic business, where prices are already smashed into smitherines. They need money, thats whats it all about, all the shambles and screw-ups have resulted in big-time loss of money.

Sale?? in this business,  never heard of anything so absurd.

Exactly! Prices are humiliating low anyway.

People always quote Alexa graphs. I do not know and have never known anyone who has the Alexa toolbar installed. From which these viewing figures are extrapolated. Not one single person.

I don't believe in it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexa_Internet

Believe it or not, it shows decrease in traffic only for Istock. All other major sites have slow but steady increase. That tells something.

Thanks for the tip about faved. I've never noticed that before. I always get lost in the messy menus on 123rf.

My advice is to choose images that don't already have million of copies all around internet. For example, don't put images with business people in faved. If you choose the images correctly, it's almost guaranteed that they will show up on the first page of the results.

@dreamframer - I was refering to the items that were not on sale, as opposed to those that are bottom of the barrel and never sell anyway.  Supermarkets constantly have something on sale - it brings feet in the door to pick up the sale item, but while they are there customers pick up items at full price too.   If IS can get more feet in the door then they may get sales on the "sale" items, but may also get those same buyers picking up additional items that are not on sale - video, audio, smaller files, etc.  Bring them in the door with the sale then load up the cart with everything.  We can only hope....

Oh I understand now. And yes, we can only hope.

Look at the IS numbers according to Alexa:

I worked in a wholesale for years. Each sale means that an item does not sell enough, or a company needs a little extra money for something. There are also promotional sales which are usually organized in the beginning of a business, to attract more customers for a better take-off.

On a very rare occasions a company would organize a sale that doesn't make profit, when it needs to get rid of some products that are close to their expiry date (which can't really be the case with pictures).

I'm sure Istock needs more money, probably because they didn't make enough to meet the financial plan. I trust them when they say the credit price will remain the same, but as I understood we will get the same percent of the new price that is 20% lower. Which means, we will get 20% less per sale that usual.

There is also the theory that getting feet in the door will result in the purchase of non-sale items too, or bring in shoppers that might have otherwise shopped the competition.

I'm afraid that non-sale items always remain non-sale items, regardless of 20% discount. Non-sale items are usually given away for free in the end because no one wants them. Also, discounts usually attract those customers who want cheap stuff, not the ones who are willing to pay more, and those customers usually disappear after the discount waiting for another one.

This is all from my experience. I would like to be wrong tho.

Exactly, the prices of images will be 20% lower, and the earnings will be 20% lower as well. But the percent of earnings will remain the same in relation to the price of the image. They actually said only the last half of the sentence, skipping the absolute numbers, which will be 20% lower.
For example, I will still earn 15% of every sale, but that will be 20% less money than before sale.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: P+ How are your sales?
« on: May 23, 2011, 18:22 »
I added my most popular images in P+ and they seem to sell at similar frequency as before... Will see after few more days. I just joined P+.
Regarding sales at IS in general, there is an evident decline from month to month. I don't think it's related only to images added to P+.

Oh yes, I forgot about "Faved". I always add new images in the faved folder, and those images have most downloads. And from time to time, if I see that some image doesn't have enough downloads even it's placed in there, I exclude it from faved, and add a new one.

Decent sales for me everything that is better than 50% of Dreamstime, and 123RF oscillates from 50% - 70% of DT sales from month to month. At least fot me 123RF was always way better than Fotolia.

I'm not sure what's the crazier story this week.  The end of the world was good but in the UK, it's all about the premier league footballer that had an affair that none of us are allowed to mention without getting sued.  Everyone knows who he is, it's all over twitter and there's funny videos on youtube.

I'm looking forward to watching Manchester United v Blackpool.  I'm sure the Blackpool crowd will have a funny song about it that they wont be allowed to broadcast on the TV.  All the news channels haven't been able to mention his name for weeks now, it's funny to see them biting their tongues.

You see, that is a cultural difference. If that was a footballer from Balkans, he would pay for the "news" to be published everywhere :D
