Newbie Discussion / Re: Rejected Istock image - advice please.
« on: September 17, 2010, 10:00 »

I don't know is your monitor is calibrated, but first, you have to check the histogram of your original image. You will notice that your graph is empty on the right side, which means your image is underexposed. Sometimes, the graph can be blank on the right, but in this case not, because the background of the image is white. Yes, I boosted colors a bit, You don't have to do it so much, but you must do it a little, because your image is all greyish and a bit dull. Increase the contract to correct this, but watch not to make color banding on that white-gray gradient.

And yes, if you take a look at best selling IS images you will notice they all have saturated colors. Although IS says your images must look natural, I advice you to take a look at best selling images and decide yourself. The main point is not to ruin the quality of the image, or to make artifacts.

I checked the histogram and although not pushed up hard to the right, it is heavily into the right. If I over expose when taking the shot, then I will just blow the whites out surely?

:-)

Now I already start to think that you don' get what I'm saying.
I'll post you two histograms. First one is your original histogram, with red arrow showing empty space on the right side of the graph. Second histogram is corrected one, with right slider moved to the left, and a little bit brightened curve on the graph, with maintained black part of the image.
You don't have to increase the exposure in your camera. Do it in Photoshop, or any other editing program that you use and your whites won't be blown out.

It should be brighter, just a bit more saturated, and with a little bit more contrast.

Thank you for taking the time to give me a visual example. :-)

Your edited example really surprised, because on a colour corrected monitor, the first image is actually the correct colours.

So istock like you to overemphasize the colour?

it has been said, but I never tested it myself, that the resorting of keywords after submission is useless for the purpose of setting the 7 most relevant. You have to sort them before submitting.

I also think that sorting keywords after review doesn't help. I think you have to do it before submitting...which I never do.

123RF / Re: editing, releases, etc, is really messy!
« on: September 17, 2010, 07:17 »
123 is really simple. I don't understand actually what is messy and confusing there. I never had problems with their submission system. Regarding editing, you only have description and keywords. (the same as SS), and no categories. When you put description and keywords, you just click on the link on the top that says "Sell Images" and there, in the middle of the screen, you will see a button that says "releases". Click it, choose the release (releases) that you need, and click the button that says "attach releases to photos". New page will open with your newest images showing first, and you just have to put a checkmark under all images that should have MR attached. That's all.

@eggshell, click the button "Sell Images" on the top of the screen, and then click on the button "download" in the central part of the screen, on the left. Here you will see the list of your recently sold images.

Thanks guys! I'm glad you like it.
@gbalex: That's very kind of you! I have more bossa nova stuff to upload, similar to "Island Dream" :)
@FD-regular: No, I didn't really have any formal musical education. I started belcanto singing when I was 22, and I was the best in my class, but it wasn't really for me, since all I learned there were very simple songs. It was kinda boring, so I decided to stop.

« on: September 16, 2010, 17:30 »
I've been observing this over the last two weeks and all the other exclusives had a delay of a few days, up to a week.

This makes you think of what other undeclared preferences, like best match, some members may have.
One admin seems never to have his keywords checked. And they're really bad.

Maybe his images always appear on the first page anyway, so he doesn't really have to check keywords :)

Very nice. I normally don't listen to that kind of music either but it's clear that you have talent. I also like "Reunion" a lot.
I'm a musician myself and have several recordings from years ago, spent hours, days and weeks playing around with Cubase. Never tried selling it though - I suppose you can't sell it if you used samples (Drumkit From Hell, Halion Symphonic Orchestra) ?

You can sell music that contains sampled instruments like Halion Symphonic Orchestra, because those instruments are made for that purpose. You can use them to make and sell your music without worrying that someone will sue you for copyright. You can't use loops and parts of other songs, or material that is not intended to be sold as new music piece, but I think you can even use some loop packs that are made only for this purpose (although I am not so sure about it, since I don't use previously made loops)

Okay, thanks for the enlightenment  :)
Might have a go with it some day then
How well does it sell compared to images?

I don't know, I just joined. But I joined few more sites. I guess it sells less often than images, but I read good comments on Internet.

Great music, Ivan! Glad you found a place to sell it, not at IS. I did think it ironic though that while I was listening to Reunion, a Thinkstock ad went through the rotation below it.
Oh Cathy, I see now. It's Google adds, right? Unfortunately it works pretty off control of people who have adds on their website. Actually, it advertises everything that has some connection to the stuff that appears on the page. In this case, it's advertising sound and image libraries.

Thank you guys! :) Wow anonymous, I would be so grateful if you do so.
Cathy, I use addblocker, so I didn't see any adds. That's a shame :(
It's funny that this website, like many other sound libraries don't accept musicians who sell at Istock, because Istock sells music too cheap. They probably don't have an idea that the same company sells images in the same manner through the website they advertise. I will drops about it. I doubt they will do something about it, but who knows.

BTW, Reunion means me a lot. I'm glad you like it.

Interesting.
But if it does work, expect the drug companies to charge 'one million dollars' per dose.
Maybe not exactly one million, but it will be very expensive, that's for sure.

These are great Ivan!  Really enjoyable!

My favorite was "Reunion".  Such powerful and emotional music.  Also really enjoyed the vocals on Moonlit Sky.  I'm a sucker for good, romantic lyrics.  :)

BTW, was that your voice singing in Moonlit Sky?

Thanks Lisa :)
Yes, that's my voice.

Hi everyone,
Since I am in IS exclusivity cancellation process I still can't sell royalty free audio elsewhere. But I decided to upload some of my full tracks that I made recently and offer them for RM license. When IS sends me a message that I am not exclusive anymore I will opt in to RF license.
I hope no one will see this as a pimping thread, because most of us here are photographers. I'm making music on my computer, at home, and I do everything from composing, through recording, producing, mixing, and post-processing.
I uploaded only 3 full tracks, and few loops. Lyrics for the song "Moonlit Sky" are written by my friend Denis Radovanovic (Goldenangel on the forum). Don't mind my awful accent while I sing, lol. I submitted instrumental version for people who want to sing it instead of me.
Instrumental "Mediterraneo" was one of my first instrumentals. I composed it when I was 18 (1992)
Instrumental "Reunion" was made this year.
I recommend you check only these three tracks, since other stuff I have there are only loops. These three tracks are very different one from another, so if you don't like the first one, please check other two.  :)

Please click here www.audiosparx.com/ivanpaunovic

and just click that small black speaker icon under the song title.
Thanks! :)
Ivan

Heh, someone just tweeted at iStock and asked if this was legal http://www.csshunt.com/istock-collection-200-aieps-very-great-for-best-design/

Wonder how many exclusives' illustrations are in there.  Extended Legal Protection!

Maybe those illustrations are from contributors who agreed for promotional use of their content.

I don't see why they would refer someone either. But actively canvassing for istock buyers to leave is a whole other thing. And based onisinformation. I hope buyers see through it.

From all your comments I see only fear of leaving Istock. This kind of fear I often see in people who live in a horrible marriage, but are still afraid to break it. The "marriage" between Istock and it's exclusives right now I see only as a weird, little bit sick relationship, where Istock is a sadistic partner, and exclusives are the partner who suffers.
Go out people, branch to other agencies, you can't lose. If you could just look at the situation from outside..... I really don't understand what more do you expect from a business partner like this? Do you expect that you will somehow prosper if you stay exclusive there??
I see only the next "good" change coming next year, and then you will realize that you lost one more year in trusting to someone who doesn't appreciate your talent, your work, and you as a person.
I'm seeing this every day. Istock did something that I see in my country all the time, and that's what scared . out of me.

223
20% for referrals... that's crazy! ("some" sites doesn't give that even to contributors! :))

that was my thought too

Lol. Yay is maybe a low earner, but they have light speed payment system, no categories, fast website, and now they have 20% referral earnings that last forever. All these things show us that they really pay attention on contributor's satisfaction and ease of work. I wish them (and us) many new buyers. :)

dgilder, that was a hard decision, but I completely understand you, and agree with you. My biggest income from microstock was from audio files at Istock, and I deleted them all and canceled my audio exclusivity. Only after doing it I learned there are audio libraries that sell much better, and share 50/50 with their artists.
After joining few other audio libraries I found some horrible comments about Istock. There is a generalized opinion that Getty treats artist very poorly.
These are some of the comments about Istock from other artists:

No kind words about Istock/Getty

The greedy subjects is what I had in mind as a protest to IS. Uploading more and more of such images, and that's what we will see more in the "newest uploads".  :D

I can imagine new rejection reason: We have enough of the same subject. :D
