Hi everybody,
We've seen a lot of guesswork going on in this thread as to what's happening, and we'd like to make it absolutely clear that we are not part of any sort of arrangement with Fotolia to keep prices in the industry at a certain level.
That being said, it is true that we here at Yuri Arcurs Photography, as many other photographers, have contacted amongst others Deposit Photos to make them aware of where the industry will be heading in a short time if they continue to drop prices. This has resulted in Deposit Photos having raised their prices. We encourage every photographer to engage in negotiations with whatever agency they submit images to in order to get a fair commission. The agencies cannot and should not agree on prices amongst them, so Fotolia will never negotiate any deals with Deposit Photos, but the photographers who submit images to the agencies can and should do so.
I hope this clarifies some of the questions which have been raised in this thread.

After carefully considering your feedback, we've decided to focus on retail pricing rather than commissions. Most of the photographers that we have spoken to agree that destructive retail pricing is not good for the industry. We have worked with industry leaders such as Yuri Arcurs and Mark Butler (Monkey Business) to convince agencies like deposit photos to sell at sustainable prices reflected by the current online market leaders. We applaud their recent success and hope the trend will continue. We encourage all photographers with portfolios on this and similar sites to do the same.
Based on your feedback, we've modified our rule to allow Fotolia to decrease retail pricing to the lowest tier, if a photographer's images are being sold on other sites for significantly less, **without** modifying the royalty levels.
Please note that this rule only applies to Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire, and Diamond ranked images that are non-exclusive, and selling at prices above the standard XS price. No changes will occur without prior communications with the artist.

Note to anyone who dislikes fotolia- what theyve done is illegal and they would be fined for it in most countries. If one company tells another (via a supplier or otherwise) to raise their prices, it's called "price fixing". Well, I guess thats what happens when you try to cheat in the most obvious way. Why did you pay them back if you werent cheating? Why did you pay them back if you were? Shouldve run. Did they threaten to sue you?

IS does an all or nothing set up. If you opt out of this partner program then your ineligible for all other programs that come down the line.
You can opt in later once "partner program" includes other things if you want to. But then, I bet anything else they add will also give an insultingly crappy percentage. The thing only exists to lower our rate- that's why theyre doing it, and why we should all refuse. Opt out.

I think your heart is in the right place but if there is ANY DOUBT at all about the authenticity of this you must find out the truth first. Otherwise youre just another gringo funding scam artists. Scams like this are very, very common in third world countries. Yes, see if you can pay the hospital directly. Find someone who speaks spanish and get them to call the place. Id help but my spanish is pretty mediocre... Dont for gods sake just send them money- thats insane. At the very least they might be exagerating the price and have the ability to keep taking your money long after the mother is cured.
Remember, you wouldnt be the first gringo to be scammed using a trick like this. Happens all the time. As someone who's been travelling in third world countries including latin america and who currently lives in one, I assure you this could be either. A scammer knows you need a convincing story. A lot of them are really smart but were born without opportunities. Peru is a very poor country with a lot of inequality. There are A LOT of very smart people who might be very nice who are desperate for money out there. Make sure you do your research and again, dont send them money directly.

I didn't, and the images are still there. I think the link out of MSG isn't working correctly.
And I agree burning bridges is foolish and makes little business sense.

Oh wake up. It's only valueless if you actually cant tell that I was joking. If you had simply chuckled at the part that was so blatantly a joke, you would have noticed the other part which had value, especially as Im the only one who actually answered your question.

Wow you guys moan a lot... He didnt just get 20 dollars for it- he sold it probably hundreds of times. Time only pays a few bucks for this because that's what images are worth now! Nothing wrong with that. I certainly enjoy my massive payslips. We all obviously think it's worth it or we wouldnt keep doing it.

wow you guys are kicking ass... Im not quite sure though whats going on- am I right in saying that if you refer someone to the site, you wont be making money from what they make in subscriptions? It's a small thing, isnt it? Or am I missing the point?
