Off Topic / Book Launch - I, Creator - a personal journey
« on: March 25, 2009, 14:10 »
Passion in Art combines with Inspirational Guidance in I, Creator a personal journey

Photographer/Writer Robert Gebbie uses emotionally charged self-portraits to illustrate his words of hope and encouragement.  Learning to cope and deal with depression is a difficult road to travel.  In this book, Robert bares his soul, and asks you to do the same.  To look into yourself, to see your commitment to your spirit, and to follow it.

I, Creator a personal journey is available through Blurb.com.  The bookstore is located at http://www.blurb.com/user/RGebbiePhoto
The book is available in paperback (ISBN 978-0-9824214-1-3) for $24.95 as well as hardcover with a dust jacket (ISBN 978-0-9824214-0-6) for $34.95.

Microstock Services / Re: Twitter
« on: March 24, 2009, 21:02 »
In a nutshell... in my opinion...

Twitter is like an open chat room.  There are millions (billions??) online, and able to see whatever you post.  You have a character limit of 140, so whatever you say, including link, has got to fit.

The trick is getting them to see you.  When you "follow" people, then you can see what they say.  When they follow you, they can see what you say.  You can type out into the void, but the possibility that someone will pick you up is very small.  So, in a way, yes.  It is another networking thing.

Hope that explains it a bit more.

I've noticed something similar, ibogdan, and think it might have something to do with whether or not you opt in or out of Subs.  Have you "Opted Out" of subscription sales?

I opted out of subs and affiliate sales, and since then have submitted images for review.  My review times are within 24 hours, and I have SOME new images with a few views, but the majority are sitting at zero.  Feels good not to have XL subs anymore :)

I found three other spots where people were photoshopped out... Interesting, at first I thought it was because they stitched the image together, but they spots I found were not symetrical... Ahh well, another conspiracy theory will form, I suppose.. :)

Dreamstime.com / Re: Dreamstime - it is time to join
« on: March 18, 2009, 17:50 »
You cannot possibly compare Dreamstime to Shutterstock.

They are two completely different companies with two different customer bases.

Shutterstock is a subscription site, and does high volume low cost images for a predetermined (subscription rate) price.

Dreamstime HAS subscriptions, but is mostly pay as you go, buying credit packages along the way.

It's like comparing an all you can eat buffet (SS) to a sit down restaurant (DT).  The food is supplied by the same vendors, but the clientel and presentation is different :)

New Sites - General / Re: When is Vivozoom going live?

Theyre selling all images collected at SS under the username El Vivo.

Biiiiiiig portfolio...

SS does not have an artist named El Vivo

... to be sure he gets only my best and newest.

That's all they are asking for, I believe.  Not all sites agree on what a marketable image is.  They mass rejected almost our entire first batch, so I figured they didn't appreciate our style of shooting, and that's fair.  It's their company, it's up to them to decide what "marketable" is.

By the way, I left our 20-ish images online there, no reason to pull them, if they feel they are marketable, then I should be able to use those as my little sample.  So far, (surprise) no sales.  Will I start uploading there again? It's possible, Zym seems to be quite willing to get involved in the community, and that's always a positive thing.  But they won't get our first runs.  I need to put those on the sites that appreciate the way we shoot first, because that's where we sell.

I would think you could sell tee shirts and sweatshirts with the team picture on it, parents could wear them to the game to help support the team.  You could offer it as a package to the team for a fundraiser, or offer individual portraits for families to buy.  Just a thought...

Dreamstime.com / Re: Why DT is not working for me?
« on: March 08, 2009, 14:34 »
We put up all our Micro images on all of our Micro sites.  DT sells different images than my other sites.  While it's possible that the customer base may be similar across all sites, there are still customers that ONLY shop at DT, ONLY shop at IS, ONLY shop at SS...

DT took a few months to pick up for us, but once it did, the sales have been steadily increasing.  While not staggering, we have received a few payouts from DT already.

Just keep submitting, the larger your portfolio, the easier it is to find.

Forum sites are a great source of information.  HOWEVER...  you also get trolls casting doubt.

I would agree with an Alliance that was there with actual facts on updates to sites, and easy to understand terms that translates over to other languages.  There could also be a rating system, giving the great points, and the not so great points.

It's true, as Individual Photographers, we would ultimately make our own choices.  But an alliance might unencourage people to join sites that don't pay timely, have unreasonable rejection rates, and that are unresponsive to their contributors.

For example, Albumo hid their 400 day lockout on images hidden in their TOS, and it was only available to be seen AFTER you registered.  Do you read the TOS directly after you just read it and agreed to it? Or do you visit it again when you have an issue?

I think, if there was an independant agency reporting on every site, it would kind of act like a credit report for the contributors.  Are the agencies credible?

Yes, we all have different opinions on every site, but the general consensus is usually the same.

62
As much as I like the idea, I don't think it would work as all the sites can easily update their terms and conditions to ban such activity while it's still in its development.

ban what activity?

No one can stop you from joining a group.  And if agencies started banning people from joining a Microstock Alliance group, then they probably shouldn't have us as contributors, anyway.

Mat, well, I hope you read this part, at least...

Interesting that you use that photo as your icon.  I feel that's what FT did with it's contributors, crushed them under their heel.

Wish you could comment back, would love to hear the story on why you chose that particular image...

And bash?  Not bashing, telling the truth.  Of course, if you can't swallow the truth, then it feels like bashing.
There is another thread where someone started slamming on Dreamstime, but the only responses were positive on DT's side, the site is well run and respected.  Interesting that a thread that started the same way about FT didn't bring the same response, in fact most agreed with the original poster.

It looks like it's time for a tea party...

DT is our favorite site, and if we had to go exclusive, this would be the site for us.

Had you said the same about Fotolia, I would have agreed completely with you.

Have you considered you just aren't good enough to be on their site?  Without seeing your port, that's just a guess, but I bet a very good one.  Maybe when you learn how to shoot commercial work, you'll start to see sales there.

Good luck!

Gebbie *who doesn't have a problem signing my name to any post I make*

I agree, got tired of the crap and pulled our port when they made their last announcement about cutting our commissions while spending more money on advertising.

Next, they will ask contributors to start paying to upload.  I'm sure that's gotta be the next step...

66
It's pretty simple, really :)

I separate our images.  Micros get our good stuff.  Midstock get the better stuff.  The artsy stuff goes in our private gallery.

i have zero problem with people googling our name.  You want one of my $2 images? Got TONS of them, you can buy them RF at many sites.  I'm sure you can find something that might fit your need.  However the risk is, someone else is using that image as well.
You want an image taken for you, specifically to your specs/requirements, and licensed exclusively for your use? Then you are going to pay my rate :)

I have images up on micros that i wish had gone midstock instead, sure do. But, it's all part of the growing and learning process, and it just makes our portfolios look that much better in the end :)

We do photography because we love to create.  We're still "new" in the business, though, we've only been in micros for a year.  But I named the company after Robert, because he is the creative force, and because it's nice to be recognized for your hard work.

Anyone can "claim" to be a generic moniker, but they'd be hard pressed to prove they were Robert Gebbie :)

General Stock Discussion / Re: Sheet music and copyright?
« on: March 01, 2009, 12:12 »
I would give them the copyright information for the music, it should be old enough.  But that's the obvious one.  Did you check the instrument placement, and can you see any part of the instrument name or crest?

General Stock Discussion / Re: why do you NOT use your legal name?
« on: February 28, 2009, 17:13 »
We chose to use our name.

Now, when you search out Robert Gebbie, Lori Gebbie, or RGebbiePhoto, it all links back to us.  I think it's kinda like product branding, I'm pretty happy to have such a large web presence with our name.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Problem logging into StockXpert

borg,

Glad you said something.  We haven't had any sales since Dec 10.

I hope they get it worked out this time...

Dreamstime.com / Re: Advise on DT Please beefore I upload to them.
« on: December 22, 2008, 16:10 »
Larry,

When we started out about a year ago, I went through the same thought process as you did.  If they don't like my port, they can go fly a kite!!
But, in retrospect, I'm glad I changed my mind.
The sites we had to knock at their door a few times, well, we're in solid now.  The test is the hardest you will have to face with their company, usually the regular reviews are much more relaxed.
We had our port at a few of the small companies, and I quickly closed them out when I realized that:
1. There are only a handful of customers that use this site
2. There are only a handful of images that have sold on this site more than 20 times
3. There is NO WAY I'm going to collect the $4.50 I made on that EL sale, because there isn't any traffic, besides, $4.50 for an EL?? what???
4. Admin is literally unreachable

Sure, we have a few sites that I mess around with, some I'm giving a chance.  But there are others that are sinkholes, and they need to be avoided!

StockXpert is worth the wait, remember, they just sold to Getty. Once the dust settles, it may be much harder to get in..
SS is definitely worth the trouble.  Keep knocking at this door until someone lets ya in, the party is loud, sometimes you gotta knock a few times :)
IS, well, I remain neutral.  We got crapped on along with everyone else in the last best match change, but two things are happening now...  We are getting more images accepted per submission, and we are getting more regular sales again, so I have hope.

Good luck!!

74
We voted for Dreamstime.

Shutterstock is good, but they do not offer exclusive images, and if you don't feed the beast, your sales decline.

Dreamstime offers a higher percentage on exclusive images, and the better your image does, the more money you make.

If we had to pick one agency to go exclusive with, it would be DT, and happily.

i replaced all of our titles, keywords, descriptions, notes, etc.

It was about 2 weeks before I tried to log in and my account was gone.  Be sure to use your DT referral link, or any referral link you prefer.

You might also want to send them an email and let them know what you did, so they can take immediate action on removing your spam :D

"I'm extremely dissatisfied with this site.  I have decided to close my account here, and as you are unresponsive with requests for closure, I have linked my entire account to a different stock site that has been a proven seller for me.  I wish you luck with your site, and hope I don't bring too many customers over to DT :)
Regards,
etc"

heheh  Worked for us :D
