Adobe Stock / Re: FT rank
« on: November 27, 2007, 15:35 »
A bit out of topic - some statistics taken from DT...

Thanks for confirming my previous post  ;)

Concerning portfolio size, I'm not sure it is a good indicator of anything useful: I've seen recently on StockXpert that in iofoto portfolio (12'000 photos), 65% haven't been downloaded at all and 25% once only... "only" 1200 pictures have been downloaded twice or more.

On the opposite side, on IS, sodafish has only 360 photos but more than 120'000 downloads!

That's interesting.
Based on these numbers they have over 20,000 contributors but only about 2500 of them have over 200 sales.

On DT, you can easily get similar interesting info by searching for contributors...

18'000 contributors, 60% with less than 10 downloads (!), 20% with more than 100 downloads, 3% with more than 1000 downloads.

It seems clear that in microstock, only a small percentage of contributors take it seriously  ;D

General Stock Discussion / Re: Black or white?
« on: November 23, 2007, 18:08 »
I think that both are useful, but white seems definitively to be better sellers than black isolations.

This seems logical as most of the time, the support background is white (paper, web page).

However, if the isolation is perfect and unless there are some transparencies in the subject, it may be easy to change the background color for the designer.  Otherwise, it may be interesting to provide both versions.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Dramatic best match changes...
« on: November 23, 2007, 17:57 »
I've just started contributing to Alamy and think their "Alamy ranking" is very clever: IS and other micro sites should implement something similar in their best match or whatever algorithm.

Contributor ranking is computed as "nb of thumbnails views / (nb of full views + nb of sales)". The lower, the better.

This idea is nice to prevent keyword spamming as in this case, you will have many thumbnails views from search results, but only a few full views/purchases which will put your pictures further in search results.

Sounds good to me.

When you look as "newbies" portfolio, most of the time the best advice to give them is "learn microstock business, improve your skills in photography".

Concerning your portfolio, my advice would be "continue this way". You just need a bigger portfolio, otherwise don't bother too much for earnings: expect to be surprised soon to see how rewarding microstock business is if you take it seriously  ;)

Photoshop Discussion / Re: problem with isolating objects

I think that the best way to isolate objects is to shoot them on white. Isolation at post-processing stage is at best difficult and at worst impossible.

StockXpert.com / Re: StockXpert, something wrong here?
« on: November 10, 2007, 10:56 »
A few months ago, StockXpert was on par with FOT and DRM, far away from ISP and SS.

Last month, StockXpert became clear #3 just after SS.

This month so far, StockXpert is... #1!

It seems that StockXpert does not perform well for everyone, but for me, it's quite impressive  :o

Off Topic / Re: 3D models
« on: November 05, 2007, 13:47 »
I know, thanks  ;)

But basically poser models are mostly characters and props are mostly clothes and clothing accessories.

If you want to model realistic characters, Victoria4 is just amazing, but if you want to model an iPod, a car, a pen, a golf ball... turbosquid is the place to go I think.

I think the best site is www.turbosquid.com... it's where I purchase my models usually :)

renderosity is mostly for poser models.

araminta.net

Chosen long before I start photography seriously  ;D

As a sci-fi lover... The Araminta Station is a novel from one of the best sci-fi writer, Jack Vance. And "araminta" sounds nice to me.

Some fantasy doesn't hurt.

I see her spinning clockwise, but if I concentrate, I can switch to anti-clockwise... for a short while and then, suddenly, she turns clockwise again.

Well, as a cartesian, I thought I would better fit in the anti-clockwise category... but as a photographer?

Completely useless I guess, but interesting  ;)

StockXpert.com / Re: subscription impact on sales?

Subscriptions sales are not displayed in monthly earnings but are taken into account in your earnings balance... at least for me.

I got a few subscriptions sales and I was indeed a little bit worried to see XXL pictures sold for $0.30.

But it seems until now that my sales are not impacted and StockXpert is performing extremely well for me for the last few months. September was BME and october earnings should be 30% higher than september!

StockXpert is now clear #3 behind SS (#2) and IS (#1).

It is however to early indeed to have a clear vision of the effect of subscription on earnings at StockXpert.

My main concern with subscription is that the price for a photo is the same whatever its size.

Pay the same for a 1MP pixels picture on a web site or a 15MP?

I know that StockXpert decides to follow this business model as they think they wouldn't compete with other subscription sites otherwise. It may be true.

But as a photographer, I may also decide in this case to upload only the lowest acceptable resolution as StockXpert and SS while keeping the highest resolution for IS?

For now, I'm just wondering whether the subscritption model is fair for me, as a photographer. SS is OK because I get a lot more downloads here compared to any other site, DT is OK for now because most of my downloads still come from per photo purchase and 123RF is OK because... well, my earning are so low here that it wouldn't make any difference.

But StockXpert is becoming one of my 3 bigger earner with SS and IS which is true only because I earn more than $1 per download on average here, not because I get a lot of downloads.

So, should subscription download become the rule rather than the exception... I may see my earning sink at StockXpert, in which case I will have to decide what is the better choice for me.

StockXpert seems confident that subscription will attract new buyers. As epixx, I think that buyers who can afford to pay $999 a year are the one who can afford to pay a lot more fot the picture they need.

This make me think about one of my picture which has been recently used as a design element for a web ad banner. Firstly, I was proud to see it: it was for an MS Office:Mac advertising on one of the most famous Mac rumors site. But I was also thinking that Microsoft has paid probably $1 for this picture... is it fair? I guess it is just business.

Let's see what happen at StockXpert.

I got my first subscription sale today.

$0.30 commission for a XXL download... $0.30 instead of $5  :'(

I feel a little bit worried, especially because StockXpert was performing extremely well for me until now. But I will see how my earnings evolve at StockXpert for the next weeks before deciding whether I'm in or out.

StockXpert.com / Re: Stockexpert - game on!
« on: August 24, 2007, 04:30 »
For me, sales at StockXpert are more than twice as high as FT and DT this month: this is a record month at StockXpert and this site is growing fast for me.

I also get my first EL license on this site... a $50 income for a single download: the highest EL price I get until now.

And if you consider the fact that you get $2.50 for XL downloads and $5 for XXL, StockXpert is definitively a site you have to join IMHO. My average commission at StockXpert is a little bit above $1 per download which is the highest amongst the many sites I've joined.

I like StockXpert quite a lot  ;D

General Stock Discussion / Re: Banknotes
« on: May 21, 2006, 03:21 »
I got rejection (from ISP only) for a photo of the two sides of a one dollar note: it was a full flat bank note and I guess that in this case, somebody could use the photo to print fake dollars :o

Other bank notes I have in my portfolio were accepted, so I assume that there is no issue with banknotes unless the photo has the potential to be used to print a fake... but I guess that the law may depends on the country on that subject :-\

Just my 2
