SOrry to take this off topic, but that means anyone can take a thumbnail and use it in a blog? I know thats always possible, but that means the bloggee is quite useless as a size to sell then. The buyer just has to take them of the search page and he is done.

I purchased the bloggees when I wrote this blog http://semmickphoto.com/2013/06/10/symbiostock-fair-trade-image-licenses/ and if I write a blog and use some images, I will have to purchase them.

a big difference I see is that you posted the images, but they don't link directly to leo's image pages; so I would expect someone to pay me if they used my images this way.  in Dan's blog, the PURPOSE of the post was specifically to highlight the sites whose images he used, so it seems entirely appropriate, and well within the bounds of fair use

however, the images that are produced by the global search engines produce links to the original sites -- that's the whole idea of a global search. this is no different than google images -- they let you see the image in situ, OR just the original image - which may or may not have a watermark.  anyone can do the same thing even without the global search sites, since the data is available to anyone who knows where to look - it's what allows the network to work in the first place.

when I extract contact sheets for use on my site, I only use my images, or those for which I've been given permission by the owner

personally, i'll let anyone use my thumbnails on their sites as long as they link directly to my site.   i'd rather give away the blog size (for which I only charge $1 anyway), in order to get my portfolio seen and sell the large sized images.  I've only had a few sales thus far - but all have been the large size

Actually, you have a good point, I am no longer uploading to agencies, so now I have better control over who gets my images so I can track them better. Now I will know if the use is legal or illeagle, certainly on my newer images.

153
hmm but somehow, this would need additional coding...............
That's the problem, I can't do that.

154
never give away for free in such a blatent way

155
How can you add a watermark to the preview?
I thought that was already the case, because I have two watermarks, a small and a large one.
I can't see any option for adding a watermark to the thumbnails. Only to the main images

You need to shoot stuff thats less supplied and in demand.

BNow what is that supposed to mean? Are people sheep?
A flock of sheep? If so, you are arrogant. Is that how you think about people, or is it just "humour"?

Its just humour, and yes i can understand that if you are a foreigner you may not understand the sense of humour.

For some reason, iStock have just announced that Yuri is a new contributor:
ICYMI, we added a new contributor. Get creating with @yuriarcurs' collection of work http://istockpho.to/18lquTt  #forcreativesbycreatives
What do they mean 'in case we missed it'? He's been around longer than I have.

More damned lies ;) .

Still don't know why they would let him undercut their own site by %85.

Pinnochio springs to mind!

They have given warnings in the past for continuously submiting images that dot pass. I would suggest that you learn from the rejection notices

Okay, you guys win!  I guess although we didn't knock the giant down, maybe we gave him a kick in the shins at least ;)
I think enough damage was done. Looks like they have had to change lots of things.

Symbiostock - Development Area / video
« on: July 28, 2013, 07:13 »
Hi

I'd like to ask some of the more technical people about the possiblility of developing video

This is going to use a lot of bandwidth so on a shared server e.g. bluehost would you be better off getting a separate hosting account and site?

if a video clip is like 300-400mb can these be uploaded on bluehost with the memory constraints in mind?

Could the search engines be adapted to take video if i managed to adapt my site?

I imagine to create a video plugin would take a lot of work
Kind regads

Symbiostock - Development Area / Re: More photo resolutions?

A custom resolution that the customer specifies would be even better

How would you price it?  By the pixel?
Yes

Hmm, I can't vote for more than one option, I guess I want to be greedy. My images do sell daily across stock sites, Currently only uploading exclusive content to symbiostock and have stopped uploading to all agencies.
I have in the last week pulled my whole port from
Panthermedia, stockami and veer (waiting for veer to come back to me)

I intend to pull every non selling image from fotolia.
Yes, I'd be happy to go totally independent on symbiostock with the exception of one problem and that is my video.

I have no way of selling video on Symbiostock:(

Also, I haven't got the slightest clue on how to code but if there are some other people out there who can code and make it happen get in touch with me!

IS may have more, but I bet the % of active contributors at SS is higher

I fully understand if agencies want to clear out old content that hasn't sold for years. Or hasn't had a sale in 18 months.

But 3 times every 6 months?

Doesn't this hurt their own revenue, especially on the seasonal images?

Anyway, I am on the lowest rank and not yet affected. I will continue to upload to Fotolia, but this means that I have to think much more carefully about the timing of files.

I guess the pressure from istock and the new half price policy is having a very drastic effect although it has only been marketed for 2 weeks.
Well im going to help them clear out some of their content.

Symbiostock - SEO & Marketing / Re: Symbiostock Sales POLL
« on: July 26, 2013, 18:25 »
I have now fully SEO'd 55 images...

Would you like to share what you did exactly?  There are so many things that I have read from different sources and it is hard to tell which ones will make a difference.
use the yoast plugin and fill everything in until you get green on image

that's what I've been doing, but it's time consuming.
here's some tips from getting to green:

-- yoast likes to see an image as part of the text - not realizing it's already there on the page   - so add a link to another image, even better if it's not under the same domain
--  outgoing links help (which is why I've been doing the contact sheets -- I can link from a horse image to my nonsym site, which also has other horse images)
-- yoast likes more text. for their reading quality think hemingway not proust. short sentences. 2 syllable words. more words. but dumb it down.  split dependent clauses
--- repeat focus keyword in title, first <2> line and first actual paragraph

steve

Ive been doing all thats on there apart from linking to non symbiostock sites. I guess an army of non symbiostock sites linking in would be useful.

This is just another way of lowering prices using indirect means
I will purge my port of all zero sale files

I always thought as a contributor my job was to produce the image and it was the agencies job to sell it, not give it away.

I Was going to drop a few low selling agencies, like CanStockPhoto, DP, GL and PD. And only continue uploading to 123, FT and SS. But if this is the case at FT, it will drop my earnings, so its no longer worth my time there as well. So I guess I am down to 2 agencies then.

ANd for some reason it feels good. I just leave my portfolio generate the small change while I focus on SS and my own site for new content.

+1 Symbiostock is the only way forward for most contributors
