General - Top Sites / Re: Why don't members show their images?
« on: September 11, 2022, 13:07 »
I would love to see people post their rejections!
We can all learn from those.

Why don't people show the links to their ports?

We used to do that a lot 10 or 12 years ago, but nowadays I think most people don't care enough to bother.

You should be able to embed metadata in PNG's. That has been my experience with Lightroom.

Maybe, but the ones I'm loading now were shot ten years ago.  I've never been able to embed metadata in PNGs in PS and don't use LR.  Maybe some day.

There is too much variability among reviewers.  I have been submitting PNGs with transparent backgrounds of JPEGs that were submitted years ago.  On my last two batches, one was accepted 100% and the second was 90% rejected for "Quality" - even though the actual quality was very similar in both batches, all were accepted as JPEGs originally, and many of those that were rejected have sold very well as JPEGs so clearly don't have any quality issues.  The real problem seems to be in finding quality reviewers.  If they were JPEGs with embedded keywords I might resubmit, but with the PNGs, having to paste in the title and keywords manually it is too much trouble to bother.  I'll go through my whole collection of PNGs, but only once - it is just too bad that likely good sellers get rejected because of poor-quality reviewers.  On the bright side, it kind of proves that they aren't relying exclusively on AI for reviews.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Tracking Images?
« on: August 25, 2022, 16:46 »
I track everything with an Excel spreadsheet, that has each image name, titles/keywords etc., when it was sent to each agency, when they replied and the outcome.  It takes some time but not too bad once set up.  Each batch of uploads goes in its own folder labeled by the day so I can easily go back to them if needed.  For example, when Adobe started taking PNGs, I could easily go through each upload folder to find which contained PNGs, then from the image names back to the spreadsheet to retrieve the description and keywords, going all the way back to 2009.  I have another spreadsheet to keep track of earnings.  Used to track lots of other things but decided it wasn't worth the time.

what's your portfolio size? with thousands of images it would seem to take a lot of time tracking each agency - worth the time at $.10 per image or low sales volumes?

Only a couple thousand and I usually don't submit more than a few hundred a year.  If it was 20 thousand then I might not bother, although it doesn't take that much time once the spreadsheet is set up.  It was very helpful to me when I started to see what sold and also to know which could be resubmitted and for keeping track of what has gone where, and I've just continued with it ever since.  Right now only submitting to a handful of agencies and that keeps it manageable.

Similar to what?  Similar to others in your own portfolio?  Or to someone else's?  If the latter then I can see why they might lock it.

Open the ESP page and click on 'Upload and review content'.

Next, click the three lines icon top left and select 'Profile'.

This opens your contributor Profile page and there is a hyperlink, Istock portfolio name, in the Profile box at the top.

Wow, thanks - glad somebody knows how to use their system.  I haven't uploaded anything there in years - are they still using that stupid CV or have they finally seen the light?

I opted out when they sent the e-mail, but just checked and it said I was opted in for new uploads!  Not that I plan to ever upload to them again but it's still annoying since I had opted out.  Now I can't figure out how to tell if my whole portfolio was opted out of Plus as I requested or if they just ignored that.

General Stock Discussion / Re: How do you backup your data?
« on: August 25, 2022, 09:05 »
All my images/clips are on an external hard drive that is backed up to two additional hard drives with Time Machine on a Mac.  I intend to keep one backup drive at a different location and switch them out periodically in case of a fire but usually am not organized enough and they are all at home.

Hope you can recover your files.

I stopped at the same time you did and haven't started again.  I have started processing images recently after more than two years - mainly to upload to Adobe to get the PS subscription - but don't plan to bother with SS just yet.  Maybe after uploading to other agencies after a few months I might send some to SS but just can't get excited about the 10-cent downloads.  The only reason would be because uploading there is easy and the images are already ready to go.  Haven't submitted to iS for many years because their process takes way more time than it's worth.

Adobe Stock / Re: PNG files on Adobestock - Some Questions
« on: August 12, 2022, 12:21 »
If you save the PNG from Photoshop (and your metadata is entered there), it is preserved. You need to use the Save a Copy feature, not Export As (which only preserves some metadata when you tell it to include metadata).

OK, thanks.  I thought I did it that way and it didn't work - will try uploading a few and will see what happens.

I found it very useful to identify occasional keywords that I missed.  Nice improvement.

I haven't submitted there in a while, but when I used to submit PNGs with a transparent background to Canva they wanted a jpeg of the file with the metadata.  Not sure if they still do that.  Is there a way to include metadata with a PNG or will it need to be added manually?  If I understand this thread correctly, we can now go ahead and submit those PNGs to Adobe even if the jpeg was accepted long ago, but in the future should only submit the PNG and it will be converted to jpeg.  If that is the case then I have quite a few PNGs that could be submitted right away.  I got into Canva pretty early and am glad I did because I make more there than anywhere else.  I assume Adobe wants a piece of that action which will be a good move for them.

I ignored the first e-mail but received a second one today - looks like it is scheduled to go live on Aug. 18th and we are automatically scheduled to be in unless we go and say no.  It seems they're trying something like Adobe's free section except without the upfront payment - which is the only reason I can think of for doing it for a contributor.  Supposedly only images that haven't had a download in two years are included, and their goal is to get people to go from free to a paid subscription to their PLUS section.  Looks like the payment scheme will be based on your proportion of the PLUS downloads - this is what they say "Your earnings = 50% of Nett Revenue ➗ TOTAL PLUS downloads ✖ Number of PLUS downloads of YOUR content".  But that will only be for anyone who converts from free to a paid subscription.  As if that ever works.  Of course they didn't say how much someone will pay for PLUS either.  I always love signing up for these vague schemes for exposure and promises of untold wealth in the future.  Yay, sign me up!

(fortunately it is easy to opt out but you have to do it before Aug. 18th)

« on: July 19, 2022, 09:34 »
Mine hit PayPal yesterday.  Just a couple of days late, nothing to worry about.

91
I usually do it some time during the first week of the month, but use iStock and Canva numbers from the previous month.

No idea how accurate it is overall but I report my numbers accurately, good and bad.

BTW, wds, if you hover over the agency name it shows the number of votes.

That explains why my images of the Vesuvius crater suddenly started selling!

What an idiot.  Gets to Italy but is too cheap to pay the small fee to climb to the top like everyone else?  And some of my countrymen wonder why we have such a bad reputation abroad. Unfortunately he is not eligible for a Darwin award - you have to permanently remove yourself from the gene pool for that - but there is always next time so we can hope.

I stopped submitting when SS changed the terms in 2020.  Leaves lots of time for other interests - you should try it.

Alamy.com / Re: $0 sale on photo
« on: March 22, 2022, 20:43 »
I hate those - had one last week too for $0.20 and my take was $0.08.  I look at it as motivation - need to increase my output by 100% to maintain earnings!  (just kidding).

The one before that was for $125 with my take around $50 so they sort of average out but those $0 sales really are demotivating.  I think they round them off so anything under $0.50 shows as $0 on the main page.  Welcome to the $0 club!

95
I'm not sure it's worth uploading to SS any more

I'm sure - it isn't.  I stopped uploading there when they changed the commissions in June 2020.

If you're getting rejections there and the images are OK and getting accepted elsewhere I would just resubmit until they pass, or just forget about it and move on.  Definitely not worth worrying about it for 10 cents a download.

Off Topic / Re: Message to all Russians in these forums
« on: March 02, 2022, 14:49 »
To support Ukraine and the international community the stock agencies should stop all contributions from Russia and freeze their accounts.  Hate to punish people who didn't start and probably don't support the war but as long as Russia's war of aggression is killing innocent civilians there should be no business from contributors in that country.

I just had another 2 sales where I got $0. I thought Alamy is macrostock. I might as well put up my images on free websites maybe someone will buy me a coffee and I will get more for my images than from the agencies.

I had my first one of those this month - it was for 21 cents and I got 8.  Sucks big time.

Right now my balance is negative because they added a late distributor charge as cleared even though the sale has not cleared.  Not worth the effort to bother with them any more.

I'm so sick of this "let's feed the Africa", we're feeding them like 50 years and they're still hungry. We should teach them how to feed themselves.

That and birth control might get you somewhere but i don't see that happening any time soon.

I have a couple of the Canon pancake lenses for exactly that situation - the same camera with a low-profile lens doesn't attract any attention but they are quick to notice if you have a "professional" lens.

Recent Study: Animal fats in our diet are not a cause for higher risk or heart conditions.

Also they might actually be good:

Thanks for pointing that out - now I can go back to having milk on my breakfast cereal again instead of beer!
