General Stock Discussion / Are we getting outsourced?
« on: March 10, 2014, 14:55 »
It seems like all agencies think the next big thing is mobile photography. Are they saying good bye to DSLR photographers?

103
It looks like Flickr contributors should become normal GI contributors but I am not sure if they going to be reviewed individually before?

OK, I am posting their message:

Today we are announcing that we provided notice to terminate our existing agreement with Flickr. Our original agreement reached its end, and while we continue to be open to working with Yahoo!/Flickr, we have not agreed to a new agreement at this time.

Your status as a contributor to Getty Images is unchanged by this news. Your current agreement with Getty Images remains the same and agreements will NOT be terminated by us as a result of this change, no matter how few images you have on gettyimages.com.

For the last 5 years we have been very proud to provide a global platform for the work of Flickr artists, celebrating their originality and talent with our customers around the world. Those of us who are directly involved with the Flickr collection have thoroughly enjoyed and been inspired by our experience working within the Flickr community. Built to represent the best in authentic, spontaneous photography selected through social sharing, Getty Images Flickr collection has grown to be a tremendous success. We have never been more committed than we are now to expanding on what weve started together.

What Will Change? Here are some highlightswith details to follow in the coming days and weeks:

Welcome to Moment: The Flickr Collection will form the basis of a new house collection called Moment.

Moment Mobile: Our new Moment-Mobile App provides another way for you to participate by submitting images shot on your mobile device. All Flickr collection contributors will be invited. (iOs only for now-Andriod to come). We are very pleased with the launch and early results from our Moment App, which is now being used by 3,500 contributors from 100 countries who have so far have submitted more than 30,000 images through the app.

Curators: Flickr curators will continue and expand their role in identifying the best social content from a wider range of sources which, alongside our Moment App, will further grow our Moment collections.

The Upload Portal you are already familiar with will be updated to accommodate a slightly different workflow (see below) but your log-in will remain the same.

You will be in control. Since we will not be using the systems built for the Flickr partnership, we will no longer be searching and browsing through photostreams or Artist Picks looking for images and inviting them. Instead, you will be using the same procedure as all our other Getty and iStock contributors and submitting full-sized, captioned and released images to us for review and selection.

Support: Communication and daily guidance will continue via our Getty Images Contributor Community website and forum. We will be sending out a welcome e-mail containing the URL and your log-in credentials. These emails will begin shortly and continue over the next few weeks until everyone is covered.

Creative Research: You will have access to our proprietary research briefs on an ongoing basis

Range of Products: You will have access to be reviewed for submissions to our other collections where appropriate including editorial, video, Photos.com, our new platform for wall dcor, print sales, and more.

What should you do? Please watch for more news and information in our Getty Images Contributors Group on Flickr and watch for important emails. Check your Contact information! Please make sure the e-mail address and other contact information we have for you is up to date so we can include you in our communications. You can do this by logging in to the Upload Portal at contribute.gettyimages.com and clicking on Update your profile in the Account Management section.

Thank you for all of your wonderful images and support over the past five years! We look forward to moving ahead with Moment, and with each and every one of you. - The Getty Images Creative Team

Flickr group pool is already disabled. They are going to sent emails to contributors how they can upload images using GI resources.

Just an email to Flickr contributors and a post on a group:

Dreamstime.com / New design for submission page
« on: March 07, 2014, 12:05 »
Why the always make it look pretty and not so much usable? Do they really test it before release?

So much crap at the top of the page but I cannot see submit button :-(

They claim that in future embedded images will serve adds as it is done on YouTube:
Quote
YouTube and other services encourage embedded content sharing because it promotes their brand, drives traffic back to their site, and provides a revenue stream from advertising. This is an approach that has been followed successfully by Instagram, Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, Photobucket, and many other leading digital platforms. Once use of our embedded viewer has grown sufficiently and can be monetized successfully, we will explore these options as well and will pay contributors/partners a royalty at contract rates on any revenue-generating activity that takes place within the embedded viewer.

I got only 3 images on Flickr collection but I can mark my calendar to check in couple months if they really going to pay their share from advertising

I can see some interesting comments on Flickr group: http://www.flickr.com/groups/gettyimagescontributors/discuss/72157641924624974/

I cannot find my images from iS on GI site so not all their stuff is included in this deal.

WebDAV - Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) is an extension of the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) that facilitates collaboration between users in editing and managing documents and files stored on World Wide Web servers.

And company is WebDAM where DAM stand for Digital Asset Management :-)

Pixmac / Re: Pixmac closing
« on: February 25, 2014, 19:33 »
Pixmac got my photos from YAY and Pond5 got my photos from two other sources :-) It does not seem like both sites sell a lot.  Even videos I got on P5 do not sell anymore.

113
Is it $10 for royalties? Should then all agencies sent us this form? I got one today, is the deadline February 28th?

I wonder when some of the big players from internet/technology sector like Google, Apple, Amazon or even Yahoo/Flickr would realize that they can make money from digital media? They already got superior technology available and it would not be their mayor line of business so they can offer app store like 70/30 split.  That would demolish whole stock industry in couple months.
Wonder what sort of kickback and handcuffs Flickr has from Getty.

Yea, they might sign Non Competing Agreement of some sort.

Two questions (which are probably valid for any mobile photo apps):
1. Are the going to lower the bar for everybody or just for user who use app. There are not so many phones on the market with good quality and resolution.
2. Why customers should care about mobile photo if they have other made by professional equipment? Are these picture going to be cheaper?

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Mirrorless Camera
« on: February 14, 2014, 10:26 »
One of the reasons I chose Olympus E-M1 was new line of pro lens they released with it. I was considering A7 for a moment but Sony does not have good lens ready for this system. I did not want to spent lots of money on Zeiss lens. Also full frame lens cannot be small so it would not be any size benefits of having mirrorless.

I just switched to Olympus OM-D E-M1. I will be able to tell in couple months how suitable it is for stock. So far I got couple images accepted and sold.

500px new project Prime, a commercial licensing marketplace for 500px photography:
http://500px.com/blog/998/introducing-500px-prime

"First: We are pricing all licenses in a way that brings dignity to the photographer, we are not joining the race to the bottom. Our licenses will start at $250.

Second: We are giving you, the photographer, 30% for every one of your images that we license. It doesnt matter how it is bought, who buys it, or under what license, your 30% comes off the top.

Third: We are using the power of the 500px community to give buyers insight into how photos will be received and perceived before licensing them. Imagine searching images by potential vitality, hero status and visceral reaction. This is revolutionary and something only 500px can do."

General Stock Discussion / Re: January results
« on: February 03, 2014, 14:11 »
It all depends on number of extended license I got. For most of the month I did not have any so I was thinking January would be quite lousy. In last week of the month I went back on track.

It would explain why my nightly FTP upload produced no result for DepositPhotos :-)
