Dreamstime.com / Re: Dreamstime uses AI in review process
« on: March 17, 2017, 16:13 »
If you remember spam filters from the past when they could collect a lot of data from the past they could calculate statistics and detect spam messages in the future.  Now they call this programs AI but the only difference is that they can handle an enormous amount of data to calculate these stats. Training them is probably similar. More data they collect more accurate there are.

Why top performers cannot be sorted by number of downloads?

PhotoDune / Re: Anyone unworthy of Photodune yet?

I actually wish other low earners commit suicide this way so I do not have to go through process of closing accounts :-) I only upload to 3 agencies right now anyway but keep logging so called "earnings" for dozen others. Now I get emails with not sales for 4 years from Dreamstime every single day :-)

I think there is still room for "improvement". How about -2 cents? Charge contributors when you sell their stuff.

FTP is not working for 2 days. I contacted support this morning but page claims that they will respond in few days.

If this is just how it should be presented on their website. It could be generated from EXIF: creation date and GPS location.

34
All other agencies simply tag image as editorial type and do not require special treatment.

General Stock Discussion / SSTK: Not A Pretty Picture
« on: April 14, 2016, 09:22 »
Article discuss Shutterstock as investment. In short in long run it has not chance against Adobe.

For me interesting part was proposed strategies to fight back Adobe, especially one suggesting increasing percentage for contributors:
Quote
As I see it SSTK has two options, sacrifice profits or market share:

Option 1)

Increase payout to contributors. ~45% of revenue at an 8% lower margin (~4 to 5 points of margin but an 8ish% change relative to its current rate) = a ~4% hit to gross profit - Adobe pays roughly 33%, SSTK 28.5%. This still does not address Adobe's captive audience in Adobe creative suite.

Lower retail download price. ~50% lower price point * ~45% of revenues = 23% hit to revenue. This would not happen immediately, but likely over time as SSTK slowly steps down pricing.

Option 2)

Maintain pricing, sacrifice share and probably target a niche in which Adobe/Fotolia does not compete. Adobe's image library targets the middle & lower market (or at least Fotolia did historically). SSTK is reputed to have had a higher quality library and is solidly middle market in quality relative to Fotolia. Adobe hired away SSTK's head of content in fall of 2015 - likely to address that very issue. Targeting the higher priced enterprise market (currently ~28% of SSTK's business) might be a viable strategy over the longer term, but given 72% of SSTK's business is currently retail, it would likely be a painful and long transition to that model.

Did they send reminder that W-9 needs to be submitted? They claimed that I submitted too late and that's why I got 1042 instead. Seriously I have had account for many years they should know where I live.

HD footage for $10 with 50/50 split would be $5 for contributor. Anybody has experience with them?

I think they messed up. They should send 1099. I contacted live help and they asked me to send email to [email protected].

General Stock Discussion / Re: Agency 1099's
« on: February 03, 2016, 11:59 »
SS and BS have it available for download. I am not sure what is minimum amount that make it mandatory for agency to send 1099-INT this year but previously some were sending it even not required. Last year I got form mailed by FT and DPH.

41
I do not think it matters. Buyer do not see EXIF data and I am not sure if curator can see it. If they like it, it could be from any camera as long it meets their requirements. It is probably harder to take good photo with phone camera but in ideal light conditions it can happen.

42
Categories are useless but agencies insist that customers use them to browse for images. There is no single way to categorize things. Picture subject can be landscape, nature, travel and christmas so only way to find it is to type these keywords and search.

43
I was once randomly drawn to the meeting with Oringer and I told him it it useless thing and they should get rid of categories or generate them from keywords but he insisted that buyers really browse images by categories. I think they do not want to generate them because it would take computing resources and they would rather let slaves do the work for them :-)

I got a lot of these errors when I am trying to process my images uploaded by FTP. Also abnormally large number of "Not a valid JPG" errors.

Files are sitting on the FTP server but I never show up on the web site so I cannot submit them.

I do not see number of contributors in this report or even better growth in  number over the years.

I guess Fotolia cannot tell the difference between royalties reported  and paid in given year.
