Off Topic / Re: Another plane crash again. RIP MH17...

I would blame mostly western leaders for repeating same mistake they did in past allowing Hitler invade Czechoslovakia. Now they let Putin take Crimea. Until now they could say it is not our problem somebody else is killed. Not any more, citizens from their countries got killed.

As far as crash is concerned it would not be resolved who did it:
1. There is regular war in this area when investigators reach the site it would be nothing to find. Weapons are already hidden or destroyed.
2. Whoever pulled the trigger is no longer among living cause only this person's confession could reveal who made it happen.

It is always like that politicians play games and innocent are paying the price.

It seems like Putin was laughing at all this sanctions and kept sending mercenaries and weapons until this happens...

Isn't EXPOSURE usually harmful? Most people do not want any EXPOSURE.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Your dream stock agency
« on: May 06, 2014, 11:43 »
At current stage of microstock probably only agency I own because being contributor sucks.

What are actually criteria to get in? Sometimes looking at some RM stuff  I got the feeling it was a closed club you can only get if you know somebody. Microstock with its craze rejections and large volume of uploads created much better collections.

I was browsing in Offset collection and stumbled on this shot http://www.offset.com/photos/61270.

Since most of my issues with SS is focus, it makes me wonder if the images in Offset need to go through the same reviewing process.
Don't get me wrong, I don't intend to bash Offset or the photographer. In fact I have high admiration for this photographer and have been following their works for years now.
For 500 dollar thats called art.

Shocking, but thats how it is these days. The work on SS is of a much higher quality than offset, yet it gets sold for pennies. Submit horribly out of focus shots to Offset and they charge 500 dollar.

So far they could not sell first prototype so they made another one, more expensive and fancier. It seem like the best they can achieve is to be acquired by Apple :-)

If studio shots or illustrations can be editorial why edited images cannot? Asking to re-edit and re-upload as editorial is just shifting work to contributors.

So if this images were transferred to editorial use they could keep them?

Yes, but remember the points here: http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_messages.php?threadid=360598&messageid=7005534

General Stock Discussion / Cutting off partner programs
« on: April 23, 2014, 12:30 »
Few weeks ago I went through most of the sites to see if I can turn off partner programs. Not everywhere it is possible so I did it when I found an option. After few weeks I can see results:
1. 123RF - no change
2. Dreamstime - it is half of what I got before so maybe in long run it would improve
3. Depositphotos - similar to above
4. YAY - it dried out totally, zero.

86
Are you asking about universal minimum size or average size people upload. I think minimum accepted everywhere is 6M and people upload usually something between 8M-12M.

87
It is occasional XXL credit sale vs everyday XXL subscription sale. If you downsize you will not get the first one and will be less sorry about second one.

88
SS - 76%
123 - 6%
FT - 5%
DT 4%

89
Very simple rule of thumb if majority of you sales are subscriptions, downsize to lowest acceptable size. Of course it is in agency interest to get best possible product for lowest possible price. Give them what they are paying for. Unless something drastically different happen on this market I see it is going to be more subscriptions with few occasional sales of other types.

I usually sent clips without sound but encoded with Photo JPEG. This time I got sound included. Still I under 30 secs. Uploaded cannot be completed.

It seems like recently files over 400 MB cannot be uploaded because connection is closed by FTP server. On other sites I have no problems uploading these files.

One has to be very careful about the "image level system" at Dreamstime. A small but a diversified portfolio may easily outperform a bigger but less diversified one. If you have many similars, it is very diffucult to have enough Level 5 images which bring the most revenue.

They also say that your acceptance ratio effects your search placement.

I have been with DT since 2007 and making 3 times better than what I do at FT.

That is actually very good observation and makes me think if it makes sense to upload new images if they are not totally different from what I have. On the other hand how likely it is that you would discover uncovered subject these days?

What's the point of handling it special if it is subscription price?

96
Somebody put too many zeroes by mistake :-)

97
Since there is no standard each site handles it differently. Lightroom keeps metadata for videos but it does not write them when exporting.

Seriously? For microstock? I think 41MP Nokia phone should be enough :-)

99
I did not mean to start Canon vs Nikon flame war. Both might have problems if they cling too much to DSLR market. Yes, medium format cameras did not got away but it is very niche product now. Definitely Samsung and Apple sell more photographing devices than Hasselblad :-) I was always wondering why Canon is not trying to sell their sensors to phone manufacturers?

100
Photography-only manufacturers have slim chance to survive next 5 years. It looks like Sony and Samsung might be next leaders. Canon may have a chance to change its course and start supplying their technology to other companies. Nikon does not have much to offer.
