the problem is you can't keep up with those guys if you not move there.

lol, so true! i know a bloke who lives like that, and he says, life is cheaper with the money
from UK where he lives, and over in the "3rd world", he gets to live like he has money to burn
and.. quote: he gets the gals chasing after him, thinking he's a loaded dude from UK!".

go where the girls are lovely, .. and even get them to pose for you
... was it not  yuri at the beginning  he was from eastern europe too , no??..
he had  the best looking eastern euro girils working for him???

« on: February 22, 2017, 10:42 »
Somebody pays their slice. If there weren't "free" sites like Avopix, we would earn more. Shutterstock would pay US more. People would not get used to bad ormediocre images and demand everything free. "Free" Sites like this kill serious photography and photographers.

i agree. i suspect there are lots of sites like this. they play it like all individuals that get paid as affliates.
some are legit sites, like leaf here, who is also a photographer and stock contributor.
others are just some mofo in a bedroom making as many sites to earn money giving away freebies like youtube, porn movies, best looking hungry women looking for men,etc..
to get what i heard was like click-event or whatever, and yes, they eff-it-up for legit sites and ss
contributors too.
i see another one where he says, something like, download the photo and send me coffee-money,.
ss should not allow this. they should be more vigilant who they allow as 3rd party distribution.

or at least, let us opt out on 3rd party distribution if they don't bother to be stringent.
they are always stringent on the contribution side but for anything that makes them money
they look elsewhere,
not good!

SS is still number one for me, with Canva and FT nipping at their heels.  However, so far this year SS is at about 50% of last year's average, and Canva is down about 30%.  FT doubled last year compared to the year before and so far this month is looking good - still behind the other two but gaining as they drop.  Over all agencies this year is very bad so far.  I'm not expecting it to improve.

hmm, really??? so, from the right column, the increase in fotolia, envato and pond has nothing to do with ss going down 40%.
personally.  i too would not consider making bright predictions for 2017 for the others, since
as we all know, Alamy used to be shooting up into the 3rd  place awhile ago, and their
contributors were all cheering . now it's back to single digit.

i don' t think there is a migration to elsewhere by ss buyers, more that it is due to their
bolstering the inventory to gull ew shareholders that this energizer rabbit just keeps going.
iow, clients got tired of wasting their time looking past the muck flooding in the new image pages.

29

yes and the quality of micro stock today reflects this...and will be worsecause nobody could live in long time and the quality will reflect this.
if i were a buyer i would never bother with micro stock, i will go directly to stocksy for example.

which may be so.. but first, stocksy is too artsy fatsy and not all buyers need that...
secondly, today it may reflect how bad stock shots are,
but ss still have a lot of very well-shot and well-produced shots before the 7/10 criterion was
removed to make way for bolstering the inventory with bad stuff.
then again, that is only a fraction of the whole inventory...

also, no one wants to pay stocksy prices either for a simple ad shot which are
a dime a dozen , mostly well done, at ss.

the bar was lifted so high at one time, i say ss micro stuffs were far superior to
getty or even stocksy today.
eg. you see a lots of clipped hlights and blocked shadows at stocksy or even offset
which would never get passed ss during the time ss was 90%
and when istock too was something else.

« on: February 14, 2017, 11:32 »
last week of jan and first week of feb were like the old days. but today its back to misery. flipping the switch comes to mind

that has been the "conspiracy" theory many months back since going public. but some fanboy or girl came to say we're imagining things , as usual LOL.
but yes, you see it, esp when you get a large amount of dls or SOD at the start of the month,
then, it's flip... long lists of zero days.
i always thought it best to see a big last minute earning come in at the end of the month, so there is
no time to flip off the switch.

it's not a silly theory. smart shareholders say, "give everyone some earning, and everybody happy!!!"
why give only a handful of top sellers. connect this to the 40 % loss old top sellers have been reporting
i say flip the switch is definitely very real at ss
...
except for the fanboy or girl who believe in Elvis and say we've gone gone "flipping" mad!!!

10 th is sure late for ss payment. i got mine very early in the month, as usual.
could it be for some in the tax renewal forms not updated your payment was delayed???
i updated my tax form early too, so maybe that's why.

33
alexander,
ss expects to pay out $35 a month.
if you can live well with that, then yes, it is still possible to live only selling photos in microstock  8)

60% right now...
well, that's exactly where my earning has been for over a year now..
or more like since they went public..
shortfall of 40% .
...which is like they expected, or promised their shareholders they get a bigger chunk of the cash
while the contributors get 60% of usual.

come to think of it, when they reduced the $75 payout to $35, it is just about that...
60%, more or less.
and when they reduced the entry criterion from 7/10 to 1/10 .. well, 7-1= 6
six off ten comes to 60 % LOL

https://submit.shutterstock.com/earnings/top-performers/

Has anyone kept link to the old page? I hope it is still there. New page does not allow to choose new images first.

Why should we have the possibility to put new image first in a page about top performers??

Because this was the only way to see the performance of new images in order by upload date. It was very helpful for me and a lot of contributors in my country shared in a forum they are not happy with this change too.
I can't understand how hard is SS to give us the opportunity to sort images by: Total Earnings, Total Downloads and Upload Date

I see very hardly a new image  being a top performer.
(It is a little like when I see job offers asking for young people with 30 years of experience  ;D)
Or we have not the same understanding of the meaning of "Top performer".

But I agree that Shutterstock should give us more possibilities

It wasn't called "Top performer", it was something else I don't remember!

top performer is to boost our ego, you know!  it's like all those other "used to be so great with SS!"
... now that it's not 7/10 entry criteron, $35 payout, SOD $28 to 102 joining the dodo bird extinction,etc..
the only thing that will make us happy is to look at...
(you guessed it)... top performer!!!
.. like... oh wow, i made $$$$$$ with this one shot. oh wow, this is so cool , i must frame this
where everyone can see!!!

the problem with the old but very simple and does it job page is that it shows you in
very large size... how (cough).. little you are earning day to day..
but thank goodness the payout is $35 (phew)...

or else where are we going to afford to pay for our six packs !!! 8) 8) 8)

to like or not to like it's just a matter of personal taste....what makes me think is that shutterstock made a substantial change in 24h vs istock taking 4-5 months to change things...

actually, there is no need to change something that works. the need is to change things that don't.
the dashboard now reminds me of all the other not so successful agencies
which make things so complicated to use,..
sort of like the first days of web-design when every site was an IT's delight of "look ma, i am so
incredible in web-designing.." which makes no sense to most plain-sense web user.

ss previous home page was just plain sensible... one look at you see all you needed.
then turn the page to see the detailed earnings, click a button and navigate ,etc..

today, it just seems to be just that, an IT's delight. hopeless for someone who wants to just
KISS (keep it simple stupid !!!)

Never mind the new earnings table is working ;-)

all i see is lemmings Oops something is wrong!!!

lemmings look left, look right... IT team is looking pretty much the same LOL..
Oops, time to "spend time with family" !!!

Despite of a couple of apparent statistical outliers (where the fact that only about 10% of people creating an account with a few keystrokes can be bothered with uploading anything really isn't), the main point which started the discussion remains IMO pretty valid. The US isn't the largest supplier of active stock contributors. This isn't surprising at all. The major theme of this (English language) forum is doom and gloom.

We can ask Irina Anosova if Russians feel the same about stock photography or they are much more optimistic about it.

Perhaps being "poor" is a relative and sometimes subjective term. If defined as the purchasing power of discretionary income, could the photographers living in the West be considered to be the ones who are poor?

maybe not poor, but poor-ly paid. yes... definitely. if you consider that 38 cts to 2.50 or whatever
is your pay for the use of your photo, definitely poorly paid.
it's much like the other commodity, coffee beans, clothing, flip-flop, etc..
you pay pennies to a worker in the third world and get the same product as someone in USA
or UK paid enough in one day which the third world worker could do well in a week or whatever.

going global does not benefit the first world. even MacDonald's, telemarketing etc know that in the first world, when they hire a third world refugee and get a happy smiling worker serving customers,
as opposed to a 3rd generation immigrant itizen, who "belongs" there who sulks over being paid minimum wage even if both are equally educated with high school and no experience.

microstock is the result of going global. it's been ages since i was paid 150 dollars for a session
, when i was then, a mere apprentice using a view or medium format film camera.
today, with decades of experience, i don't even get what i use to pay for coffee. LOL
when they hire

Actually I've seen lots of praise for small outfits that bring in almost nothing....yes in the end we have to suck it up but its a fair observation...big corporations often fail when they lose sight of the basics.

Don't get me wrong, I am all for supporting underdogs. It is my anecdotal observation though that people who complain the most, as soon as in a position of power change their tune very quickly. It's only human I s'pose.

Technically big corporations are not persons, they can't have a vision or anything like that, they are collections of people with very different personal goals. A herd of cats most of the time.

Hmm, they are collections of people with the only and unique goal to make the most possible money in the less possible time.
They are called shareholders

so true!!!  shareholders :- synonym for scavengers 8)

There are a lot of things to fix on the Shutterstock site.
https://forums.submit.shutterstock.com/topic/88885-things-that-are-broken-on-ss/page-4?hl=broken#entry1580857

So it would be better if they fix what is broken and let as it is what is working.
Yep thats the point why change stuff that works when there is stuff to fix. Or as was well put earlier fix the roof before you change the wall paper.
[/quote]

ah yes, but only those who know what they are doing can fix broken things;
those who are clueless can only pretend to be doing something by "improving" something that is already working well. 8)

It was back.......now its gone again and just whirring.....oh no - I lie - it's meercats (scouting around for a solution maybe?)
What a state of affairs when it is one of the things that didn't actually need fixing.
:(

On the other hand, soon may not have to go there so often. Not a single additional sale has been reported since this morning.

Note to self: update CV.......

:(
Works for me dont like it...nothing wrong with the original

oh-oh, i smell a new IT dept at the new expensive tower,
therefore need to show they are better than the one who left to"spend time with family".
so, since they can't fix the real problem that the predecessor failed to improve,
they decided to send their own smokescreen..
to fix what does not need to be fixed....

ie. but reducing the available infos of easy access for the contributors
so it looks like the new IT  knows their stuff.
(psst:  no doubt , another cousin of another major shareholder's cousin's cousin  8)

42
Actually BOTH Trump and SS promise more......but will deliver less  ::)

LOL, must be the signs of the time..  scavenger !!! no apology !!!

ironic, i was just listening to Joni Mitchell 's Taming the Tiger before going to bed..
this is the album she decides to quit the music business.. as she considers it a cesspool..
or something smelly like that.

looks like someone is trying to tell me something of my own "industry"..
time to move on to something else...

be a shareholder of ss, for one!!! start a small ad business so i can cheer ss some poor sucker
with a "photographer" ID is getting sucked while my business thrives  as a scavenger..8)

43
i went to the forum to look..

i am even more surprised that big sellers like sjlocke, etc are not saying anything to this.
here, i am waiting for jo-anne, and of course, sjlocke,etc.. to tune in.

the only thing i read worth shouting is the one who was smart enough to say,
give us an OPT-OUT.

perharps, we should get that choice.

« on: January 24, 2017, 08:21 »
the only thing i see not working is after signing in, "cannot direct to the site" or something like that. then i F5 and it goes in. not sure why. perharps with all the browsers updating .. mostly to enable using it with your mobs, i think that f**ks things up . my guess, as it does the same with many add-ons.. ie with each update, add-ons no longer works. for that i don't update my browser anymore, in case my programs stop working.

45
in my first days of photography, carrying a view camera wanting to be ansel adams, i bought this book "how to make a million taking photographs with a 35mm" or something like that.
till this day, i still haven't made a millions even as a commercial photographer, and finally a stock photographer.
but i have a strange feeling, those who did earn a million, either wrote books like that,
or like lise g of istock, never read one of those books.

And our work paid for it.

they have to find a less expensive way than sending away their IT to spend more time with family.
this way, you escort them to the top and tell them to jump :)

Adobe Stock / Re: Adobe stock - Sales of new images
« on: January 20, 2017, 12:34 »
the contrary of ss...only new sell old not.

You need to read the SS thread. Only old sell there, not new? Seems to be, whatever anybody wants it to be. Old only sells, new only sells, 25c people only sell, old people have advantage. Whatever you see is true.

lol, y3 is that a multiple choice.. a)Old only sells, b)new only sells, c) 25c people only sell, d)old people have advantage.
correct answer is e) all of the above.
seriously, yes, old will sell if it sold first day on going live.. and will continue to sell while you sit by the pool at the hotel (or plastic baby swimming pool in your backyd) drinking pina colada (or cold coffee).
new will never sell ever if it did not sell after approved.
if ever.. the diff will be like old image total $1000 and still going . new image 4 sales in a lifetime $10
with super 2.70 SOD ;)

Sales stopped! Usually 40-50 sales per day, this days only few subs! This month 78% down in comparison with last Jan. Btw Dec 2016 was my BME on SS. My port is 45% bigger than last year. Around 4k images online.

This is my experience, too, in sheer downloads.  I have kept up by SOD and video.  On Sunday I made $100. I almost always make $4-$6 on a Sunday. These one-offs are saving my rear in order to at least maintain my monthly income.  That $100 BTW was three sales (2 video and one SOD).

me too. the thing is unexpectedly january open up surprisingly with SOD and sales which you didn't expect due the the holidays, but then it peters out to lots of zero days till now.
the thing is, we should not expect SOD to save the month for us...
which has been my case for a long time already... although the $80 and $102 are non-existent anymore for me. evn the $28 is a dodo bird.

Shutterstock.com / Re: down the toilet
« on: January 18, 2017, 23:39 »
I don't think Shutterstock is in any trouble.  They have probably made it easier for new people to sell new images.  They carry on making more and more money but every individual contributor that has a lot of older images finds it harder to sustain earnings.  It will work for them because they have massive oversupply.  They make more money by selling more images from newer contributors that are on the lower commission levels.  It's a shame things seem to be going the same way as other sites but it was inevitable really.

i agree with you. older contributors are in trouble; not shittershutterstock. you know they are giving everyone a piece of the pie. in the past, sales keeping going, from day 1 till day 30,31.
but for months already , since the basic payout is 35bucks, you see  big sales come in at the beginning of the month, you can be sure there follows a bunch of zero days.
it's almost like the best thing for you is to make a big sale at the end of the month, or else, you can be sure your payout will be about 20 to 50% of your previous years' month total.

as for uploading new work. i have done the opposite. after 6 months of no sales, i delete over 3,000 new works in the past years, instead of letting it sit there to bloat ss total images.
and when i see the new images improve selling, i submit them back again.
if that's how they want it, i will play dirty with them too.
..
until you start behaving like the good old professional ss which was #1 in the close 90s
and the new images are not just garbage loads of similars of amateurish laughing stock photos ... i will be as unprofessional as they are.

and yes, i will bloat adobe with my best images with regularity.
