i'm sure he knows the score and his investment is not too much ambititious but just in line with his possibilities.

i just wonder why he setup his biz in south africa, of all places ?

plenty of cheaper places in europe without going too far .. portugal .. greece .. croatia .. cyprus .. and what about Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines ?

Good Q. (Actually)
South africa has so much mixed culture from immigration that you can find very competent support/hotline staff that speaks almost all European languages perfectly. Also. The primary language of South Africa is English which is great. Besides that it is a country in development and probably soon will be doing better than many European countries. I believe we will see a reversed migration in the coming years. South park is right: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_of_the_Meheecans

sounds good.
do you think there's also plenty of choice about local models in south africa ? of every ethnicity ?
as i'm based in SE asia one of the issues for me is that the people than ends up in my images are
all asians and the market for this is not as big as for caucasians.

I grew up in Cape Town and believe me, there is a model overload there. You can find models from every ethnicity without problems, amateur or professional. It's also full with Europeans (Germans, British, Dutch etc.). Lovely City!! My Girlfriend is trying to get me to move back since our last holiday in Cape Town.

I use a laptop just for surfing while in other parts of the house or while travelling.  When working at my desk anyhow, I have a desktop and wouldn't switch it out.  I have all my images on my computer for easy access which means lots of hard drives, something a laptop couldn't do.  A laptop also can't be as fast, because everything has to happen on one drive.  If you have an SSD then you are limited to hard drive space.  I have an SSD hard drive for programs so things open and run fast, and another SSD drive for caching intensive programs like photoshop and adobe bridge, then have all my other data like picture files, video on several other drives.
Like others have said, it's also much easier to upgrade one piece of the puzzle in a desktop.. and not having a large monitor would also drive me bonkers when actually trying to get some work done.

I was also just about to write this.

In a Desktop you can have a SSD to run all the Programs and Operation System and at the same time have several other Hard Drives as Storage.
The Data also is safer in my eyes if stored on a Desktop. In my laptops Hard Drives have died, but never in my desktop PC's. If you really wan't to be on the safe side, you can build a RAID setup where all the Data gets safed onto a second Hard Drive.

All in all, the only advantage a Laptop has is it's portability. I think the best thing is to have both!! :)

I have a decent laptop and desktop but need more horsepower. Some of the newer laptops have some major power. Instead of buying a new desktop I was thinking of replacing both and just have a laptop. Anybody else only have a laptop? Any major positives or negatives?

I have been using a laptop (only) since 2008 and no negatives.. You only need to get used to it.. Once you do, you will realize we don't really need huge screens to work :)

Since '05 here.  One thing that's nice about a laptop is you can buy a docking station, and connect your larger monitor/keyboard/mouse/drawing tablet to it, which keeps your laptop portable while enabling you to continue using larger screens, etc, at your desk.  The docking station also acts as a battery charger.

This is actually quite a good idea.

I myself use a Desktop for stock etc. and a laptop for my University stuff.

But all in all i really prefer using my desktop. Nice big screen, faster, i can add a new HDD whenever memory gets low, Huge amount of USB ports etc. But i'm also a bit of a geek and love opening it up and adding new stuff etc.

But as fast as technology is developing, we'll soon stick our Phones into a docking station and that's our PC that we can carry with us all the time :)

sorry messed my post up. Can't find the delete button! ::)

Well, here you can see how different opinions can be.

I also thought that Italy played absolutely great soccer. They where very unlucky in front of the goal, they had the chance to score numerous times.
But i just found that the pace of the game and the combinations where very nice to watch. After the regualr 90min Italy had 32 shots from which 20 were on goal, whereas England only had 4 shot on goal. Italy just didn't manage to score.

England wasn't great, but i havn't seen them play well in ages. They have one of the strongest leagues in the world, but the national team is never really convincing.

They reminded me of chelsea at the champions leaque. Always the weaker team, but nobody managing to score against them. It must be the experienced defence :)

Very exciting game! One of the best at the Euro.
The Italians really deserved the win! They where dominating most of the game.

Italy - Germany is going to be really exciting!!! Hope that germany wins!

I think it is FIFA rather than UEFA that are dealing (or not) with the issue. The system they are currently testing is Hawk-Eye, which has been used successfully for several years in cricket and tennis, and requires no sensors in the ball. Hawk-Eye uses high-speed cameras to track the ball and triangulation to work out it's exact position and also predict the future flight if required (for lbw decisions in cricket for example).

I'd love to see a review system introduced into football in which the captains of each team could challenge the ref's decision, say twice in each match for incorrect challenges, and technology used to determine the outcome.
Since this is a European tournament I believe it's under the direct control of the UEFA. The FIFA may suggest certain control systems but the UEFA may make their own decision about that.

Be that as it may, there are several ball tracking systems being tested not just the one you mentioned.

I'd like to see a solution that provides instant results without the need of "challenges" or game interruptions.

This is what sets soccer apart from many other sports that use such technologies like American Football or Basketball where the game play is constantly stopped ANYWAY, regardless of challenges.

I feel the whole spirit of soccer will be lost if such interruptions would be allowed for the sake of figuring out if a ball was behind the goal line or not.

I also agree. It ads so much discussion potential :)

I noticed this when watching tennis. Years ago my friends and i would discuss non stop if a ball was in or out, nowadays the players just challenge on the big points. Yes the challenges are very exciting while they are happening, but 10 min later the whole situation is already forgotten.

I got this Pic rejected : http://www.shutterstock.com/cat.mhtml?gallery_id=796441#id=104893088&src=f3620557102e69a9591bcac772a6e5d1-1-21

for the Keyword {[ White (Descriptive Color)]}   :-\

Would you say that this is normal?  Cause i am totally confused with iStocks keyword rejections, since i take out at least 50% of my keywords i use for the other agencys.
I mean the background is isolated to white and the guy is white (caucasian), or doesn't this count?

Not for White (descriptive colour).
The DA for the guy is White (Caucasian)
For the background you have all of: isolated, isolated on white, plain background, white background.

Ok thanks, this helps a lot. I was a bit confused, since english also isn't my first language. Now i know!

I can't imagine how I would manage if English (i.e., Standard Scots English) weren't my first language.
At least you'd get a laugh!

Well my english isn't to bad, i used to live in South Africa for quite some time. You also learn a great amount of new vocabulary when doing keywording! :P

Yes! England won and ended at the top of their group :)
The score counts - not very convincing performance plus a disallowed goal of Ukraine - close one...

Whether all of the ball crossed all of the line is somewhat irrelevant as the player who 'scored' it started his run in an offside position (which was missed by the linesman). If there had been a review system, like tennis, cricket, rugby, etc, then the goal would not have been awarded.

just watched it on youtube and yes two wrong decisions made a right one  :D
He was really in a obvious offside position and the ball was clearly over the line.

... everything was just wrong, the setting, the body-language of the hippie model and the hardhat stuck on top, even the industry backdrop looked wonky. :D

I bet there isn't a stray pixel.

Added: or maybe it's the beefcake equivalent of this cliche:

I got this image rejected

I like that some of the photos don't even have hard hats in them. Unless a mirror ball counts

Yeah, while I always get the inspector who takes 'horizontal' out of a horizontal photo, or 'copy space' out of a photo that's mostly copy space.  ::)

I thought this was only a problem for us independents. This is one of the 2 issues I still have with IS:

1. Overly strict about keywords. I'm affraid to get rejections for keywords and therefore remove most, this in turn will surely affect my sales.
2. Rejection of all my composites (for overfiltering) which are my best selling images. Do they reject for all contributors or selectively, I wonder, can't be bothered to check, got better things to do.

I'm actually not that bothered anymore since sales are miserable lately.

If it isn't editorial, I guess it is just one that slipped through.  For the most part, though, the inspectors do a good job with that stuff.  Inspectors at Istock have found logo issues that I missed a bunch of times.

I agree, once a picture got rejected because of Logo on a button. It took me quite a while to find it, cause it was really tiny :)

Nice to hear!!!! I think it's very good going!!! I'm way slower. Got accepted in December and made about 140$ (thats in about 6 months). So i'm waaayyy slower. But i have photos, so that makes quite a difference (i always heard illustrations sell better).

And I only have around 300 pics online :(.

Keep up the pace ;)

Cro:Irl game saved the day. At least some decent footy, a few goal, attacking, not just defending and/or passing the ball in the middle of the pitch most of the time

Ireland wasnt bad at all, kind of surprised actually, that said the referee team wasnt on Ireland side too...

Yeah, a player was off side when they scored the 2nd goal and the ref didn't give them a clear penalty. They're always lucky, just like Italians.

The offside doesn't count if the pass comes from the other team. In this case the Ball came off the Irish players foot.
But the refs really where a bit against Irland. That was a clear penalty!!!

A player (or two) was in off side position, when one of the Croatian players shot from outside the box (a few seconds before the ball bounced back to the Irish player who assisted Jelavic), the second situation was OK, the way you put it.

As far as i know, that doesn't count as offside, since the players where in a passive offside (the player with the ball wasn't passing to them). As long as the players who where in the offside position don't obstruct the opposite players, everything is fine.

Still, the situation was very unlucky for the Irish players.

Today England - France is going to be top.

I'm betting on France. Benzema is in my eyes one of the best strikers around. I'm also a huge Ribery fan (because of he's soccer and not he's looks  ;D)

The Game yesterday was very tactical. The defence from both teams where standing very good and i think thats why it was rather boring to watch. Germany got very lucky in the end!

Can't wait for todays Spain - Italy game and tomorrows England- France game :)

144
The Germany-Portugal Game is very slow till now :P

What do you guys think.

I'm betting on a 2-0 for Germany

145
The Russians played very nicely yesterday.

I'm a big Germany fan, because of the tactical soccer they play. But i guess it's not always as nice to watch. Today is going to be a good game (Germany - Portugal)!!!

Do you guys also play soccer, or just watch?

Well i am quite a newby, but have around a 60-70% Acceptance Rate at SS and yesterday only 1 got accepted with a batch of 34 images, which has never happened before. The images where of a higher standard than my previous batches, so i was really disappointed :(

In Germany its called Pfingsten and is a major holiday, the schools are off for two weeks and families head south for sun and fun . . . . .

Wow, this is bigger than Christmas then? I'd say bigger than Christmas and Easter combined...It must be a protestant thing than (England, Germany is protestant for the most part as well)

It's a hokiday in all european catholic countries as far as i know. Here ins Austria as well as in Slovenia, Croatia, Switzerland etc. we have Holidays till Tue./Wed.. Most people see it as European Spring break and go to the Beaches to Party etc.

I think about switching to Mac whenever I need to upgrade, but I can never justify the extra expense for a slower system.

Do you factor in re-sale / used prices - i.e. how much you will get back on your equipment when you have finished with it ?

Eg - in my experience a used 5 years old Macbook will sell for something like 1/3 original price on eBay. In good condition and well advertised it will go for more (especially if somewhere along the way you upgraded the drive and RAM using OEM parts). Even broken Apple equipment and parts have a good resale value. See how much a 2006 Mac Pro desktop is still worth for example.

All of our equipment gets recycled like this.

This is totally true. I will never really understand why someone will buy a 5 year old pc for so much, but thats the way it is. Guess it has to do with Apple's good Image!
