An object isolated on a white background isn't really isolated if it has a shadow. :-\

General Stock Discussion / Some Ad Agencies are Worried About Us
« on: February 25, 2010, 09:27 »
My 60-year old ad agency shut down 2 days ago (worked there for 5 years) so yesterday I was interviewing at a small marketing company here in town and was talking about working as a part time stock photographer. The two people were concerned that we, as microstock photographers, might not make much money selling our photos for so cheap. But on the other hand, the owner of the company was mad at IS for raising the prices on the exclusive content making it harder to find cheap photos. Anyway, it was interesting to get feedback from buyers.

I wish I was making enough from microstock to live on but don't have enough photos online yet. Maybe in a couple of years.

As an avid bird watcher, I really appreciate the work that went in to this commercial. Note the beautiful stock image in the opening frame. :)

123RF / 3 ELs in 4 Days
« on: October 29, 2009, 15:00 »
So I've been on 123RF for about 1 1/2 years with no ELs but in the last week I've had 2 EEL sales and 1 PEL sale. Does this seem strange to anyone? Sounds too good to be true.

General Photography Discussion / Gigantic Seamless Backdrop
« on: March 13, 2009, 10:13 »
Just wanted to share this with you guys. :)
My company (ad agency) recently had this huge seamless backdrop in our building painted white to use for a client job. You could probably fit a car on it. The curved part is made out of plywood and plaster and you have to wear foot protectors to walk on it (boxes in foreground). They said I could use it any time but unfortunately I don't have any lighting equipment yet.  :-\

General Stock Discussion / Price for Photos Used
« on: December 23, 2008, 15:41 »
My company will possibly be designing and producing a calendar for one of our clients to give away to their customers. If they were to use some of my East TN landscape shots with a name credit and based on my limited experience in selling photography (about nine months), what would be a fair price to ask for each photo used? Thanks for any help :)

Off Topic / Custom Photo Calendars
« on: December 17, 2008, 14:41 »
Hi all :) For the holidays this year I created a 2009 calendar using the iLife and IPhoto software on my Macintosh. Basically, I plugged in my photos to their template and sent it off to Apple to produce. The price was $20 plus shipping (around $6.00) for a 10x13 wire bound calendar and the quality was excellent (photo pages coated stock, calendar pages uncoated).

I'm getting requests for more of these and I'm wondering if any of you with more experience have any suggestions for a more cost effective way of producing them? Do you think it would be best to use a local printer with a digital press to do short runs since I have InDesign to set up the document? Or is their an online alternative that would work better? Thanks for any help :)

Cameras / Lenses / New Canon EOS Rebel XSi commercial
« on: June 02, 2008, 14:49 »
I bet this commercial wins lots of awards. ;D

They used 10 photographers and nearly 70,000 photos to create it and used the EOS-1D Mark III to produce the photos.
