You might want to pick up Malcolm Gladwell's book Outliers, where he postulates that in the end it is perhaps nothing but else but luck that propels the overwhelmingly successful and separates them from the also-rans.

I read the book. He said that some people are lucky because they are born at the right time to take advantage of new technologies and because of the opportunities and tools offered to them but in the end, the ones who work the longest and hardest are the most successful. He says 10,000 hours are needed to go to the very top of the heap and to master your skills. Excellent book, highly recommended.

Last year we lost 2 big trees in our front yard and the dandelions took over.  Now it's a sea of yellow.  It's just not possible to remove them all one-by-one, or to use an herbicide while trying to get new grass started at the same time.

All I can do is try to create conditions that cause the the grass to predominate, and the weeds to die out, over time.  I water a lot and I applied something that is supposed to prevent the existing weeds' seeds from germinating.

Some people don't see dandelions as weeds but think of them as beautiful wildflowers. ;)

I hope they do!  ;D
They already sell music by the download so it wouldn't be a big stretch to sell photos. GO FOR IT APPLE!

Looks great. How do we make our own apps?

Thanks for sharing this time saving tool! :)

I have CS3 right now. This new feature alone would convince me to upgrade to CS5 once I start making some money freelancing. :)

The application is now broken after the update. :'(
Won't open at all.

A lot of times the thumbnail with the watermark is used "for position only" until the client approves the image, then the designer can buy the correct size and replace it in the document. Sometimes the design goes out without replacing the fpo. I've done it by mistake a few times when I was really busy. :o

Looks a little dark. Maybe they don't like the pink background?

I don't think the coconut will be accepted. Really messy looking. You might want to to clean up the stray fibers and white thread. I see two shadows under the coconut. One of them has a hard edge and the other one has a lot of color noise and should be smooth. There should only be one shadow.

Off Topic / Re: Flipping burgers
« on: March 04, 2010, 17:27 »
I guess I'm luckier than all you McJob people. I went right into typesetting and graphics in high school and missed all the burger-flipping jobs. BUT, what goes around, comes around. Today, graphic design seems to be a McJob paying minimum wage, while flipping burgers may pay more!  :) That's sort of a joke. Maybe not.

I replied to a "Typesetter" job for a commercial printer on craigslist recently and the person told me it was for around $10/hour which is about the same as it was 20 years ago. Pretty pathetic. The good freelance graphic designers around town charge $60-65/hour. I used to charge $45/hour as a production artist.

Thanks Tyler! You do a good job with your tutorials. Clear and concise. :)

HUGE improvement over previous design.

Not thrilled with the redesign. Looks plain, not aesthetically pleasing. Maybe they could have done something with the logo type to make it more interesting? Minimally better than previous design.

Wow guys!
I thought I was missing out on a opportunity but maybe it was wise to avoid this one?

They know about microstock but aren't aware of how many agencies they can download from. For example, they knew about IS and SS, but never heard of DT and probably all the other smaller agencies.

I don't know yet. Fortunately Knoxville has a good graphic arts community so something should come up soon. I would love to work at home. May try freelancing for awhile.

General Stock Discussion / Some Ad Agencies are Worried About Us
« on: February 25, 2010, 09:27 »
My 60-year old ad agency shut down 2 days ago (worked there for 5 years) so yesterday I was interviewing at a small marketing company here in town and was talking about working as a part time stock photographer. The two people were concerned that we, as microstock photographers, might not make much money selling our photos for so cheap. But on the other hand, the owner of the company was mad at IS for raising the prices on the exclusive content making it harder to find cheap photos. Anyway, it was interesting to get feedback from buyers.

I wish I was making enough from microstock to live on but don't have enough photos online yet. Maybe in a couple of years.

I started from nothing 2 years ago and have found this forum very supportive and helpful. If you feel inferior, this will be a problem where ever you go, not just here. Sounds like you might be spending too much time on the forum looking for problems? Maybe find some other things to do with your spare time?

Veer / Re: Wow! Major sales at Veer!
« on: February 24, 2010, 06:36 »
I have a 74% approval rate with nearly 500 images online, no people. Getting close to my second payout. Although there has been inconsistent sales, Veer has been doing well enough to stick with them.

Excellent tutorial! Thanks Leaf  :)
