-Submit each file as an illustration, even if it resembles a photograph
-Include "generative AI" in your title and as an individual keyword.
-Add "generative" and "AI" as additional individual keywords.
Thank you,
Mat Hayward

Hi Mat,
Thanks, that is clear to me, but I still have a question about model releases.
Is there a difference in the way I submit the following images :
- a photo (non AI) of a real person photoshopped into an AI background + model release signed by the model
- an image fully created in AI, with a non-existing person created in AI + model release signed by me

Buyers never see the model releases - they cannot even see if a model release exists - so my question is :  how does a buyer know if the person in the image is real or not?  Is there something the artist can/should do to let de buyer know ?

Happy New Year to all!

I might submit some of my Midjourney results this year, so I was searching the Adobe database to learn more.
However, I found images that were clearly Midjourney generated, without the "AI generated" label - I have no problem with that, but I do have a question :  in search mode, how to filter only model released images ?
In the left column (filtering), I can select "illustrations" and "with people", but is there anyway to find out if an image is model released?  This would enable a buyer to know if the "AI generated person" in the image is depicting a real person or a fictitious one?

Example :  if I search for "child reading fairy tale bear" + illustration filter :
- "with people" enabled gives me 80% illustrations WITHOUT people (lots of teddy bears, books etc.)
- "without people" enabled gives me 15% images with AI generated people (some without the AI tags)

So how does a buyer know if the person in the illustration depicts a real person or not?  and how can a buyer find out if a model release has been submitted or not?  (of course, this last question has nothing to do with AI generated content).
If "without people" means "no model release", then clearly quite a few early submissions got through without a release.  But if "with people" means there is a MODEL release, then why do we get so many bear/book illustrations ?

Let's take a real-life situation (at least it's real-life for me) :  suppose I "create" a beautiful background of romantic woodlands, or a victorian interior, or anything in Midjourney (or any other AI program) and I use it as a background for a cut-out photo of a real living model.  So the model is a photo and needs a model release, and the background is AI generated.

If I put this image in my Adobe portfolio for sale, it should be submitted as an illustration with AI Generated in title and keywords.  And because it is AI generated, reviewers will assume the woman/model is also AI generated, so not needing a model release ...

I think I already know the answer :  submit as illustration and add a MR, but how will this affect search?  If a buyer searches for a model in romantic woodlands, and he/she ticks the "with people" button, which images will appear?  Only the ones with MR, or also the images with an AI person in it ?  Interesting problem?

Would like to hear Matt's opinion about this ...

Bigstock.com / Bigstock Bridge is closed ...
« on: October 22, 2022, 10:08 »
As Bigstock hardly sells anything for me, it took a few months before I noticed my portfolio at BS was not increasing anymore (while I was still uploading to SS).
A short e-mail to Bigstock and I got a (surprisingly fast) reply :

"Thanks for reaching out to Bigstock Contributor Care. We truly appreciate your contributions to our collections during all these years! Unfortunately, they have reported that the Bridge Program between Shutterstock and Bigstock is closed; it will remain that way until further notice. If you like to submit the same content you have approved from one platform to the other, it will not be marked as a duplicate, however, you will have to do it manually. "

Must say I cannot feel happy or sad about this, but just in case you wondered, it's not a bug, the "bridge" is closed.
And no, I have no plans to start uploading manually.  Not for 9 dollars per month.

AI is just a tool, like 3D rendering and other apps that help create images. the images created with  these apps have the creator's copyright - none of the AI tools attemp.t to claim such a copyright

For Midjourney that is only partially correct.  Yes, the person who types in the instructions owns the copyright and can sell the images, BUT unless you took the most expensive "private" subscription to the software (more than 50 euros per month on top of the standard subscription), every other subscriber can see, download and use your images.  And you don't have the raw format to prove they are yours ...  So yes, you absolutely have the (copy)right to sell them, but knowing that some one else can do the same thing with the same images does give an "insecure" feeling.

56
We're all talking about "pure" AI generated images here, but since I'm "playing" on Midjourney (so much fun!), I can see a lot of potential for backgrounds.  It is great to be able to offer my studio clients more than the standard studio backdrops.  Midjourney makes absolutely wonderful "fairytale like" landscapes, and if I photograph a client with the right direction of lighting, I can offer her a portrait both with standard background + photoshopped into a Midjourney backdrop.  This is completely OK with Midjourney (free commercial use).

1 step further would be submitting real, model released people photos with AI backgrounds to stock agencies.  Since that is obviously not allowed by most agencies, I will not put any effort in creating these for stock, but what a pity!  So much potential lost ...

Canva / Re: Anyone having problems with Canva payment?
« on: September 16, 2022, 02:12 »
I got mine as well and the fee also disappeared.

However, there is one thing different with paypal: I get my Canva payment in $, but the main currency of my paypal account is . Usually I have my total PayPal balance shown in and underneath I have a breakdown of how much of it is and how much is $. But now I only get shown one total amount, no $ in my account anymore. Not a big deal, just wondering. Anyone who's main currency is not $ seeing the same?

No change here. I also have dollars & euros at PayPal and the Canva money went to the dollar amount, just as always (with the difference that I also had the payment "pending" for 24 hours)

58
Corrected here too!  And very "normal".
Looks like some one at Canva will have to do some explaining to the boss ...
(may be he/she was recruited from 123rf?)

59
My average per month of Royalties lies between 150 and 250 $ ... today I find ... 0,21 dollars royalties as "my share".
Put that into a percentage, I get about 99,84% down ...
I would believe something like 10 or 20% down, but going from 150 to zero ?
So this must be a mistake OR Canva did not sell anything last month, at all ?
(by the way, my individual sales went "up" from 5 to 8 dollars from July to August, so there was no reason to expect this)

General Stock Discussion / Re: How do you backup your data?
« on: August 08, 2022, 00:16 »
I have a double backup 2 hard drives, switching them every week - software used :  Mirrorfolder. This protects me against crashes, but also against my own stupid mistakes like deleting files by accident.  Mirrorfolders makes a simple COPY of the files.  But local backup does not protect against theft or fire, so I also have a Backblaze subscription.  I have about 9 Tb so the initial backup to Backblaze took about a month, but you don't even notice that, it's all automatic (and very cheap, a LOT cheaper than hard drives).

Just checking!  I usually have sales every day at 123rf, but not on 16+17+18+19+20 June.  What about you?  I had a sale again on the 21st, so it could just be bad luck.  Or has the sales reporting stalled again those 5 days (in that case, I'll write to support again).

I have sales reported every day between June 16-21, except for Sunday the 19th.

OK thanks, so I was just having a bad week at 123rf then!

Remove the logos in the simplest/dirtiest way possible. Why bother for pennies? I usually just paint with color over the logos (much faster than cloning) and the agencies accept the photos

Well said :  why bother for pennies!

66
Remove logos. I've gotten much faster the more I've done work like that :)

Some shots might slip by, but if I'm going to bother to edit a shot, I want it to be accepted anywhere, not just the agencies with bad AI reviews or a bleary-eyed human trying to meet their quotas...

You're right of course, but 1 modern container ship can carry between 6000 and 20000 containers, so if I say hundreds of logos, I'm really not exaggerating.  Removing them one by one is booooooooring ...

General Stock Discussion / Removing brands in city scapes
« on: May 24, 2022, 11:14 »
When I shoot images of a big port, with the cargo of the ships (= lots of containers) in view, I painstakingly remove every ship name and every logo/brandname from the containers.  That is such a boring job that I don't have many "industrial" images in my portfolio.  But yesterday I was browsing the Adobe library and I found lots of images of big ports, flooded with brand names.  Like hundreds of containers with the MSC logo on it.  And yes, these were commercial licenses, not editorial.
Did I miss something?  OK, these logos are small, because it's hundreds of containers in 1 image, but still, it is possible to read the logos as they are not blurred at all.
So what do you do with your industrial photos full of small logos?  Just NOT shoot them, spend HOURS/DAYS removing logos, or just submit as they are and keep your fingers crossed?

68
Can you believe it?  I just had another image deleted with a mother kissing her child.  This time a fully dressed African mother kissing her fully dressed toddler son.  OK, that is good to know :  next photo session I'll have every body wear a Covid face mask while they're kissing!  :P

69
At this point in time, I wouldn't worry about any images being taken off a microstock site for whatever reason, least of all dreamstime. The puny rewards you get for keeping images on a port just don't make it worth stressing about.

I'm not worried at all, at least not about my images or my income from Dreamstime.  I should rather worry about the state of mind of people who think it's necessary to delete a mother/daughter image because of a loving thank-you-kiss ...

70
Dreamstime is "cleaning up" their database again.  This time I got two rejected images that were submitted many years ago (which is not a new thing at Dreamstime, I know).
What is new is the reason :
Both images show the most innocent mother's day scenes, shot during different photo sessions, of a 5-year old girl giving flowers to her own mother and kissing her mother.

No, there is not even a HINT in the direction of lesbian kissing or pedofile behaviour AT ALL.
Oh, and both people in the pictures are fully dressed.

What the h...??
Are they doing a AI search on the word "kissing + child" ???  And since when is kissing inappropriate?

Dreamstime explanation :
We are sorry to inform you that due to changes in Internet regulations, we can no longer keep online certain types of images that can be considered inappropriate or that can be open to interpretation.
Unfortunately, your image fits one of these categories and had to be removed. As this is a time sensitive matter, the thumbnail has also been removed and is no longer available.
Thank you for your understanding.

Also seeing refunds of 2011, 2013, 2016 etc. for more than 6 days now - and hardly any new sales.  What is going on there?  Are they "cleaning up" old stuff and make us pay for it?

Welcome to the club (pensioners). Sounds all right.
Bruges is my favorite city in Belgium. I mainly know the other cities because I drive on to France, Spain.
We want to go to Ghent or Antwerp for a few more days. Just wait and see.

If you go to Ghent, spend the night there, because Ghent is FABULOUS at night - they even won a Unesco prize with their evening lighting of the historical buildings ...  (but don't forget to bring your tripod!)
