I have browsed through all files in this collection and I must say it's a wonderful collection very diverse with all aspects of modern stock photography. Who ever curated this did a great job! Unfortunately he did curate it for the dumbest deal in stock photography ever!

It's not all new images.  I just had a quick look and recognised many Getty Images that I bought for commercial projects at least 8 years ago. Not that it makes any difference. I may be another handing in my crown shortly.

I can also understand the copy case but what gets me is 600 Vectors for $30 Are you nuts!?

http://www.vectorious.net/      600 Vectors for $30

The future of Microstock?  SS are slack with stuff like this.

Can it get worse? How about the 2 x 70gig Torrents out there that contain high quality SS photos. Seems to be all new material as well. That's a huge security breach.

I thought microstockphoto.co.uk was joking.  iStockphoto often requires some form of proof when submitting an illustration such as this. For example, in my last vector upload I included a photo I took of a rusty bin because I had used it to create a vector grunge effect. I think the same principle would apply with the banana. Therefore, I see no harm as long as you make it clear you produced the work from a photo you took. If, by coincidence, the art work has been done before without your knowledge, then I imagine you would not be reprimanded. Andy Warhol himself copied lots of famous items! Otherwise, you will be walking on glass for the rest of your life.

81
I wouldn't do it, especially with companies that are known to be picky about copyright.

E.g., as an experiment I applied a few simple edits to a banana using Corel PhotoPaint. It's a generic banana bought at a local supermarket, the photo is mine, no special plug-ins were used, and the resulting illustration is completely my own work, so it's probably not an infringement based on sites' rules. Nevertheless, I wouldn't dare to upload as stock, since I am afraid someone may disagree.

Note that some major stock sites tend to shut down your account in case of doubt, so it's better not to take the risk imo.

LMAO

You made me look, dammit!

Honest opinion would be difficult.

This industry is now saturated with copycats. It's like China on a global scale, and there's nothing to stop it. Time to get smart or drown with the sheep.

84
Thanks  :D

I take it I won't get any kind of royalties from it ? Not really that bothered as it certainly adds weight to my portfolio.

Not any more than your $0.38 from Shutterstock no.  Unless they needed to buy an extended license that is, then you should see $28

It almost breaks your heart when you think of the vast sums of money spent on producing films.

Only if you are Exclusive with iStockphoto  ;)

Looks good!

Well, I am just going to have to be frank here.  Evidently any adjustment to the RC credit system is off the table, and without that, there is no way to regain the good will of most of the contributor community.  We are here to sell images and make money, and when the site continues to take a higher and higher percent of our work, there is no way to feel good about that company.  Contributors who are also buyers have no incentive to buy here anymore, and none of us have any incentive to refer the site to buyers.  Unless this one issue, which is CRUCIAL to contributors bottom lines, is remedied, the site will continue its decline.  No amount of communication or (loooong overdue) bug fixes will matter if there are no buyers, and the buyers aren't likely to come back to a place that is paying artists so poorly.

Clearly this thread was an exercise in PR and not a serious effort to repair relations with contributors, because money IS what's going to make us happy.

Well said Frank :-)

Shame its been locked but not unexpected.

Have not come across that (yet). As a workaround, could you not trim it before exporting to EPS10?

Its a culture thing! America is a fast paced culture. Need it now not tomorrow, with a "can do" attitude. Australians are way more relaxed, even a little lazy, and typically prefer the pub, beach or BBQ to an office.
You'll get yourself into trouble with statements like that....

The question is which part will get me into trouble? ;)

He is a very talented artist and knows how to draw. Using a tablet and pen would be a good start.

Yes, I tried it the other day as well.. It is far from ideal.. I'd rather pay for ktools than put up with this..

why don't you get ktools instead of paying photoshelter every month? I think it could be better in the long run.. I already have CMS account for my site and I like it.. I believe you have to have either ktools or CMSaccount..

I was just wondering if this plug-in could replace them as wordpress is much better SEO'd than both.. but it is pretty poor the way it is..

I want to stay with Wordpress for its SEO and many other features. Also, its quite possible someone, maybe Sellmedia, will develop a better plugin for our needs in the near future. With a small portfolio like mine I can afford to experiment.

92
anyone else tried this one?

Tried it today. As others have stated it lacks many features. If you are on a budget with a small portfolio, and only selling RF then definitely worth looking at.

I'm now trying Photoshelter ($10/month + 10% commission). It took very little time to setup for RM and integrate into my Wordpress site. Its not completely seamless, but you can customise it to look almost seamless. Quite like it so far. Not sure if it can re-size images to their respective RM sizes.

93
Thanks for clarifying this guys.

I've gone ahead and used the Alamy RM EULA (Worldwide) as the basis for my own RM EULA. The only major change I made was to remove the refund policy (defects excluded) but still allow the license to be cancelled. Well, what the heck :)

94
I've heard that some IS Exclusive people sell RM on Alamy. Can not an RM image be sold multiple times as long as the history is recorded?

Yes.

Thank you

95
The main difference between RM (or work for hire) and RF is the the number of buyers per image.
RF is multiple simultaneous buyers per image
RM is one simultanous buyer per image.

If you do an exhibition and sell multiple time the same picture to different clients, that's still considered RF, and is a breach of exclusivity contract. You can still shoot people and sell them their own portrait, that's basically RM and is allowed.

I've heard that some IS Exclusive people sell RM on Alamy. Can not an RM image be sold multiple times as long as the history is recorded?

From IS Exclusive Agreement 2.1
but shall not include ......   Content that is "Rights Managed", which is defined as Content produced by the Supplier and licensed for a fee that is based on one or more limited uses and for which usage history is tracked;

96
Not yet but it sounds like a good idea.

If you are IS Exclusive are there any restrictions to setting up your own site and selling material as RM? I'm a little vague about the whole procedure but given the current state of affairs it might be something I would consider.

I'm up to day 12 of waiting for images to be approved. that seems long for IS?

I haven't uploaded since September. New uploads do not seem to be selling because of best match or whatever.

General Stock Discussion / Re: The end is nigh. What will you do?
« on: November 23, 2012, 06:10 »
I believe the microstock industry will become increasingly inaccessible to amateurs ... it's only a matter of time. Too many images are added every day on the agencies collections.... something must be done in the future and this is the only way...

This I agree with 1000%!  its to weed out the amateurs and a hell of a lot of generic garbage. This has got to be done just to get a clear overview of this mess. Some of them have already started with strignent reviewing, etc.

They slso have to realize that in the search, the heart of the agency, they simply have to include the commercial sellers, the bread and butter stuff that ensures revenue. The days when they could just sit and wait for great portfolios are over.
As one CEO of an agency said to me on the phone, 99 new ports of 100, are just pure rubbish.

well mine's good so yours must be rubbish  ;)

Slight tangent, but I came upon this article from April about Calgary stock start ups and their fates (not just about iStock). Seems that merry-go-round keeps on...

Reading about EyeWire, it seems the writing is on the wall. Ouch!

it does look like a very interesting feature, I have never tried worldpress and I would like to know what are the requirements to get a website running, do we need anything else beside the following?

- register a domain (how much are we talking about? 10$/year?)
- hosting (FTP, MySQL and unlimited space) (seen a few pro solutions from them at 35$/month with 35GB)
- a theme (100$/year to access all themes or buying a single theme for 75$)

is it better than ktools or cms? does it require more skills and work?

p.s: not saying I am going to open my own store just thinking out loud

This plugin looks promising.

With so many options its best to do the hard graft and research it yourself -  It does require a server with PHP, SQL. Make sure your theme has good support. A lot don't!
