Did you go up from 1 to 2 sales, or from 100 to 146 sales?

368 at this point. Last month my first 12 days gave me 246 sales. For me its a huge difference. I don't have a port of thousants of images just 435. So I hope it will stay like this.  :D I am growing about 100 extra downloads average every month since I bought my home studio. This makes creating more images allot easyer but it's not only my new work. Older images seem to sell better all of the sudden.

I'd love to see your port

102
Not worried, per se.  Just makes me scratch my head that an image that has sold once since mid-February is "more popular" in my port than an image that has sold nearly 5000 times since January of 2007.

Over at shutterstock, I'm seeing comments that you get better replies here, so I thought I'd give it a try...and please excuse me, as I am sure this has been discussed to death, so perhaps if someone wants to just point me to the correct thread, that would even be helpful.

How is it that relatively new images that have not sold once are showing on my first page of most popular?  Honestly, I just don't get it.

I just tried to log in at 9:30am Eastern (US) time.  Same thing is happening; it takes you back to the front page.  So either it's not fixed, or I am also too insignificant!

LOL - yes, I'm still not able to get in.  I highly doubt anyone is as insignificant as I am.  In the 3 or so years I've been there, I've only managed to get 6 files approved.  Somehow, though, I did manage a couple of payouts over the course of time!  LOL!

Thanks - I looked briefly for the topic but didn't find anything.

Is anyone else having this problem?  When I try to log in, all I get is the login page coming back up.  I wonder if it's because I am insignificant there, (to say the very least).

....I am sometimes very curious about the featured images on shutterstock's front page.  I have asked in the past and received the explanation that if you know the rules you can break the rules.  But this one I just don't get as a featured image:

Obviously, I'm off base, because there is so much I don't understand, so how does this image break the rules in a good way?  I've tried to shoot something similar time and time again just because I think water drops are striking images, and they never come out looking like what I'd want to submit like this:

Is it because the splash is kind of in the shape of a crown, maybe?

Am I being an ass?

I agree with Joanne 100%

The only thing that has ever worked against any of the agencies has been the treat to cut off the supply. Remember we own the content therefore we do own the power. The question is do we have the courage of our own convictions to exert that power or are we going to surrender that power to the agencies by not standing up for ourselves.

I have contacted support requesting that they remove my images and close my account.  My small, pitiful effort will not affect them at all, but perhaps my doing so will be just one more drop in the bucket of "protest"

Wow - I've never spent much time building a port on FT, and glancing over this thread now makes me very glad.

I jumped over here from the ss thread out of morbid curiousity about who got thrown out.  I would have NEVER thought it would be Bobby - holy cow, you're top tier, Bobby!  You produce images that I could only daydream about!  What are they thinking?

Anyway, I won't get into the politics - I'm not involved over there remotely - but I hope you know that it is their loss, not yours!

Wow again.

like j2k said,
i too am still unclear about what you're shooting , riffmax.
you said stadium lighting. and dressage. are you saying you are "using existing light of the stadium lighting", and the subject is "dressage"?

what type of light is the stadium using? what kelvin/mired  (ie colour temperature) , do you know?
you don't say much about the lighting other than it being stadium.
the hallway of the stadium or the reception room is lit differently from the actual stadium where the sports are being lit. so you have to find out the colour temperature .

Thanks - I will ask that information if I don't find it here:
http://www.qualite.com/Design.html

That is the company for whom I am shooting.  It is the actual stadium where the event, which is dressage,  is being lit.  The equestrian arena is not nearly as large as a ball field, so that's why I am describing it as a "small stadium"

This is one type of photo they have asked for.

Then they have asked for some photos of the actual competitors in the arena, showing how well lit they are.  Ideally, they'd like to have nearly a full frame of a horse and rider with a light tower showing in the distance.  I don't know if I can do that, but I'm sure I can come up with something.

111
I have been retained by a marketing company whose customer is the supplier of the stadium lighting at a small arena.  They want some panoramic style shots of the whole place when the lights are first coming on at sunset, and then they want some detail of the event itself.

The "action" is dressage, which is very slow paced and deliberate.

The lenses that came with the camera are the Canon 75-300 and a Sigmatek 28-80.

I'm all good with low ISO.  I was only going to experiment with a higher ISO since it would be better than a high ISO on my own camera, which is NOTORIOUS for noise.  Yep -got the tripod and cable release all set.  I'm pretty much glued to those anyway!  I'll shoot some at 100 and some at 200.

F8/F11 - got it.  I'll have to play with it.  Maybe I should go to one of the local parks one evening this week and just shoot to see how things look.

112

For best results, shoot RAW. Try to keep ISO at 100.

I know that RAW will give me the best options in post processing.  I will be practicing with that this week (the shoot is on Saturday).

So, even shooting at night I should stick to ISO 100?  I mean, yes, it will be very brightly lit and I should be able to compensate for the lower ISO with my other settings, right?

113
Just wondering, how difficult is it to keep microstocking without owning a camera thats at least 6.3MP or a dSLR at all?

Good luck though with your project

That is a very fair question, and I will readily admit it is difficult, to say the least.  I get monthly payouts, though, and look forward to the day when my personal economics are not so dire as they have been for me for quite some time and I can afford to upgrade.  Right now, however, I can't even afford to upgrade my vision perscription, so I just keep shooting away as best I can!

114
I have been retained to do a shoot and my camera will not quite meet the minimum size requirements of the final image.  So, thanks to the enormous kindness of a friend, I have been loaned a Canon EOS 6.3MP Digital Rebel.  I have to take a crash course on this camera and am looking for any tips that may help me get going.  Also, if anyone knows where I can get a copy of the manual on-line, please put a link up.

I'll be shooting the lighting system at a small stadium at dusk, as well as some detaiil of the event being lit.

No DSLR experience, but I do have a grasp of the basics.  I am mostly wondering if anyone knows of a "sweet spot" to set this camera to under those conditions, as I will not have the opportunity to pre-try or to learn alot about this camera.

I appreciate any input!

Thanks everyone - I found borrowlenses yesterday.  Everything is a la carte, so I have to do the math!  So far, Concho Cameras has seemed to have the most affordable deal.

Yes, Chris, Hutchinson Island is about a hour away - I was just up at Blowing Rocks last weekend - had a big batch (well, by my standards anyway) rejected by ss (all for composition issues, which I have resubmitted and asked for a re-review) - and had a great shoot.   Like I said in my PM, I can't possibly accept your offer, but it is very kind of you to make!

As much as I could kick myself for getting in slightly over my head, it looks like I will only eat up a portion of my fee for the shoot, so I will get an opportunity to dabble with a new camera (first DSLR) for a week (I'll shoot as much stock as I possibly can while I have it!  LOL!) and I still make money, so it's a win-win.

If anyone else has any suggestions, let me know!

Someone has offered me a real gig.  Trouble for me is that they want finished results at 300 dpi - minimum size print 8" x 10".  Well, my li'l ole Panasonic only shoots in 72dpi and when I convert it to 300dpi after the fact, 100% prinit is only about 6" x 8".  I am quite sure it wouldn't work to upsize the resolution (my max is 2560 x 1920) before resetting the dpi to 300 during postprocessing.

Therefore, I am considering doing a camera rental for this shoot.  Where is the most cost effective camera rental place?

General Stock Discussion / Re: What type of stock photos do sell?

You can see this question from time to time in the forums. Some agencies help you with this answer by providing some useful list. I some times look through this list, but often I have to search for them because a forgot where they are located. So I created this page to keep them handy.

http://photo.hlehnerer.com/WhatIsSelling.html

Please let me know if there are some missing.

I have come to the conclusion that these stats are skewed and therefore probably worthless.  I know that at ss, those most popular images are, for the most part, populated by featured and free images.  So we're reading results of 2 things - one, is the result of being promoted by ss.  That gives a vague indication, but still is showing results that include images that "are not equal" in how they are being presented to the buyers.

The other is the result of giving images away.  There is no way that the popularity of a free image tells us one iota of what is selling.  To me, it's apples and oranges.

120
I got one - I asked for new images to show up sooner.  I just had a batch of Christmas stuff approved recently (I know, I know - lots of Christmas stuff going in now, so that's part of the problem) and by the time they showed up, they were already on the fourth page of "newest".

what is going on with SS? lower and lower sales each week.

are there too many photographers, and too little buyers?
I think you are right on this. The 1 million images added each half year have for result this

To be quite honest, I think that the competitions (and yes, I have been a part of them) have done as much to oversaturate ss as anything else.  It used to be that if you downloaded regularly, even if not very many, that you'd be able "keep current".  But now we have a few photogs who are madly uploading hundreds of images per batch just to be at the top of the current challenge, and in order to keep current, you better be able to come up with significant volume!

Do we get notified if we get a bid?  While I am interested to know how the site is doing and am anxious for my first sale, the primary reason I keep going back is to see if I've got a bid.  My concern is that if a bid goes unanswered it could be withdrawn or the customer buys another image.

Has anyone had any bids yet and can answer?

Go to the critique forum there and read and read and read.  Yes, watch out for noise - that's a biggie.  Avoid flowers and nature.  Use your best "Stock" shots - not your best "Art" shots.  Use shots that are the most technically perfect you have.  Do NOT get offended if you are rejected!

But mainly, to get the best idea, go to the critique forum.  I recommend you post some there before submitting.  The photogs who really help there can be blunt, but they are usually spot on with their comments.
