Cameras / Lenses / Re: Tripod Legs Recommedation
« on: October 10, 2018, 11:32 »
I like Feisol tripods. I use them in lots of tough conditions and they keep going.

Lots of benefits to using DeepMeta, I highly recommend it.

It's especially useful for analysing the impenetrable data Getty coughs up for artists once a month and for tracking sales of groups of files using the boards functions.

General Photography Discussion / Re: Great spot in Tokyo?
« on: August 23, 2018, 15:07 »
Hi, question for the connoisseurs of this city: I'm going to Tokyo in a month, it's going to be essentially a culture, gastronomy and photography trip. As I'm going to be alone, I'm going to have a lot of time taking pictures. Do you have places to see, to visit and to photograph that are not necessarily in the travel guides? Place not to be missed?

I plan to do :
- night long exposure;
-timelapse with a motorized slider/pan/tilt.
-Videos
-sunset/sunrise pics and timelapse
-a lot of pics of anything nice (editorial and not)

Thank you !

I would say that pretty much the entire city of Tokyo is an absolute goldmine for what you're describing. It is truly incredible, especially at night and blue hour. Just walk around and you will stumble upon location after location. As a very nice bonus, it is also extremely safe which makes walking around alone with camera equipment at night a pleasure instead of something unpleasant.

Just use suncalc.net for exact sunset/sunrise times and locations. It's brilliant. It will show the correct times once you're actually in Tokyo, as it displays the time based on your IP address.

For an incredible aerial view, you can go up to Roppongi Hills and the Mori Tower. I did not bring a tripod up there, so I don't know their policy, but there is plenty of space so might not be a problem.

All in all, this city is a photographer's dream, and I will probably go back soon, now that I have much better equipment and skill.

Thanks! i just add Roppongi Hills and the Mori Tower on my list!

I use 2 app who do the same things... i will be good.

Also, I plan to bring my motorized slider for more fun ;-)

 :)

You get a great view from Roppongi Hills, but they don't even let you take a bag out there, let alone a tripod or slider. I had to put my camera bag in a locker and carry my camera with one lens out onto the roof.

Photo Critique / Re: Please critique and feedback my portfolio!

Hey fellow traveler,

I'd suggest to get in touch with Robert Harding and/or 4Corners. Some of your work shouldn't be on micros and that's a compliment!

Here's a link to my port on RH which i'm quite proud and has not been easy to build since they reject most of my submissions (80%+):

https://www.robertharding.com/photographers/alexandrerotenberg/

PM if if you're interested and I'll be happy to give you some tips on passing your first submission.

Alex

I couldn't get Robert Harding to even reply to my initial contact when I was looking to find a RM home, so don't expect too much from them.

Just click on the appropriate month's coloured bar to isolate that month, or pick a range on the sales selected bar graph at the top.

Deepmeta is very, very useful for analysing sales now with the addition of boards.

The Brexit xenophobes are seemingly determined to crazily crash the UK economy into the dirt, so I'd stick with sterling if I was you (the lower the value of the against the $ and the , the more 's you get).

Can you tell where my feelings on the subject lie?

I get paid in $ so I'm up a lot over the last year. Even so, I'd happily forego the money for a return to sanity here in the UK.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Download your own images...
« on: March 24, 2018, 17:26 »
I use qHero for uploading images to IS and it has an option to download any of your image. File has original resolution and minimal compression. It includes all filled metadata - title, keywords, etc. I used this possibility few times to upload files with ready metadata to another stocks.

Is this only for images you uploaded via qHero in the first place, or any image, however uploaded, from your portfolio?

Off Topic / Re: Annihilation on Netflix
« on: March 13, 2018, 13:58 »
I think Netflix adapts the compression rate on the fly depending on your download speed at that moment, so if your internet connection is suffering, so will the image quality.

Great book, looking forward to watching it.

Says 60% on their site. They're unlikely to tell you the deal they have with agencies.

I assume its RF only, no RM so no use to me.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Deep Meta Stats
« on: February 03, 2018, 06:41 »
The latest versions of DeepMeta have a "Keywords" section, showing all keywords used in your portfolio, along with royalties, downloads, RPD, RPI, etc. You can sort by these columns as well, revealing your top selling keywords.

What do the asterisks next to some keywords mean?

Great development by the way, thanks!

ETA: never mind, I see they're Vocabulary or Candidates.

Stocksy / Re: Call To Artists is Open!
« on: November 29, 2017, 13:53 »
They want free marketing from their contributors.

It's a cooperative, not a traditional agency, they're supposed to all work together for their common gain.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: How do you view your sales for iStock/Getty?
« on: November 20, 2017, 10:24 »
DeepMeta is probably the best method at the moment, and I think Franky has plans to implement tools that will allow you to track sales of shoots / lightboxes etc. Highly recommended.

The bit about exclusivity was interesting.

Wouldn't surprise me if they tried a trick like raising the base level back to 20% and doing away with 40% exclusive royalties whilst proclaiming it a win all round for artists.

They'd get renewed enthusiasm from the great mass of contributors that would drown out the complaints from the small number of 40%'ers left.

I'm still using PSD 6 and I guess LR 6 is as far as I'll go with that too.

Anyone switched from LR to Capture One?

Ron, Actually only one....Mike took a TON of our Jokes and Kidding for years. he came to my first seminar in 2007, he was at My House. We had Lunch many times.. we had a lot of fun But, Truthfully If you made half what he makes and made you would be a different person. personal style aside he made a Lot of Money and still does. He was and is the  classic example of what Penny stock really is. Your a good example of that also But you'll never match His work ethic..And Im glad I helped you get approved and the baby is adorable. Congrats.. All 3 parts.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: iStock is SO BAD THESE DAYS
« on: September 21, 2017, 15:39 »
I haven't had any communication that the Getty commission rate is going to drop from 20 to 15%, which is a major 25% reduction in royalties.

I'm assuming they'd tell the artists first before a stock news site. Perhaps it's just for photographers who supply them with pictures from phone or similar 'non-traditional' methods.

Great pictures. Looks like they belong on somewhere like Stocksy or the higher priced RF agencies - keep an eye out for when they're recruiting.

"What can we do to improve your Getty Images/iStock experience?"

How about not sending me an iStock statement with a negative $320 balance four years after you cut me?  Yeah, that would be great.

Four years? Holy cow, that went quick!

I thought a "hyperlapse" was the camera moving through an extended distance, like a walk through Central Park or something.  All the ones I clicked on on your site seemed to just be regular, panning or dolly timelapses.  Or what looks like a drone timelapse.  What makes them a "hyperlapse"?  I'm just curious if I misunderstood what that was.

I thought hyper lapse meant big movements during a time-lapse, and these certainly have that!

Can't imagine it'd ever be worth selling films like this as micro stock though, the volume and royalty amounts are just not there when measured against the cost of production.

I've been through various solutions over the years for shooting in remote locations where power is non-existent and have come to the conclusion that a massive stack of SD cards and a big bag of batteries is the easiest, most fool proof method. Don't bother with CF cards any more, SD cards are now fast enough and much cheaper and smaller. If you travel on a plane, take care of how you transport lots of batteries. I've had hundreds of dollars of batteries confiscated from hold baggage before now.

Editorial reviews are back up and running again.

123
Looks good. What are the limitations on the data from iStock and Getty?

124
Editorial inspections are on hold because there was some problem with the collections they were appearing in.
