Here's a sane and rational article about this potential legislation and what Europeans can do to help change it:

Ah, it's not just me then, thank goodness!

There won't be many who will continue uploading for years.

Doesn't matter. The agencies plan is to have 10 million contributors all submitting 1 image and never reaching payout.

Well done Ireland.

Now if you'd only extend the same courtesy of dignity and empathy to pregnant women seeking an abortion I'm sure the rest of Europe will cheer you to the rafters.

There's no secret - I'm guessing it'll be the same for video as with photos. Well shot, on trend lifestyle shots that are model released is where the money is.

I really had a great time as an exclusive till 2012 too. At that time I had a monthly rpi of 4$/image. Before leaving exclusivity I was at 0.5$/image/month. All said.......

How is your recovery from exclusivity going?

I would love to see istock improve, but getting out of denial talk and genuinly reaching out to people would have to come first.
Why do you think they haven't been talking to contributors?

Have they talked to you?

Lightroom is definitely worth the money. Buy it now before Adobe restrict it to subscription only.

I'm not seeing any improvement, other than rising subs which will have to multiply by 10 times to make up for falling credit sales.

I'm going to make less from credit sales this month than I used to make in a week.

It was sent as an email to Exclusives and links to a video on the Getty forum. I get the impression it wasn't for general consumption.

I hope none of you naysayers meet this guy:

Seriously, if photographers are questioning the appropriateness of street shooting then we're in bigger trouble than I thought.

If I had to make a unquantified guess as to why this is, I would say you are reacting the general loss of privacy and the feeling of powerlessness to do anything to change it.

It's interesting to see what percentage of sales are to the U.S. as well - about a third in my case.

Another trick for long exposures (longer than the ones originally mentioned) is image stacking. Works really well for star trails.

General Photography Discussion / Re: 95% Eclipse 2015 today
« on: March 20, 2015, 07:15 »
Catalogue of errors for me this morning. Firstly I failed to scout a location properly and ended up in the woods with no real useful silhouette to shoot the eclipse against.

Then I set the ISO really high to shoot this image hand held with a long lens on the way:

And of course, forgot to reset it afterwards, making everything super noisy and more or less useless. Pah. My pathetic best effort:

If the only difference nowadays between amateur and professional photographers is that professional are supposed to get it right every time, then I well and truly failed that test this morning.

Off Topic / Re: the NYT exposes Peter Lik's scams !
« on: February 24, 2015, 13:37 »
his work is very mediocre and clich and far from spectacular but he knows what his market wants...which is bright, over-saturated, feel good living room art, framed well to match the decor of wealthy buyers lacking much depth in fine art knowledge.

http://www.lik.com/thework/likinhomes.html

...a combination of Steve Irwin and Lance Armstrong and PT Barnum

Well it's not what's generally accepted as 'art' in the gallery world of photography, but to say it's mediocre is just nuts. It may not be to your taste but there's no denying the impact of the images when you see them.

Photographers love to think they can do what others who are doing better than them (me included), but it takes a lot of time, skill and effort to get images like that. Don't be fooled by the showman persona, there's some real craftwork going on there.

If his gallery business dries up those images would sell really well as stock!

He takes a great picture and his galleries are fantastic at displaying his work - I think the problem lies not with what he charges but that the sales methods infer that the picture you buy could increase in value and is a investment rather than just buying it for its aesthetic value.

I do find people who belittle the actual work annoying, it's no mean feat to get those images in many cases.

« on: February 19, 2015, 07:58 »
If it works as advertised, it's a pretty good solution to getting rid of the lightbox links.

196
It is outrageous - without our work to sell there wouldn't be any extended licence to sell either.

197
It's an extended insurance cover licence - their argument is they carry the risk, so they keep 100% of the fee.

« on: February 12, 2015, 02:47 »
It's curious...  Every time they start reporting PP, Getty Sales, or Subscriptions, my credit sales stop.

I've noticed the same pattern every month, but it may just be coincidence.

I did ask whether the reporting of other sales effects reporting of credit sales and was told it didn't.

« on: February 09, 2015, 16:58 »
I think (though I'm still not completely sure) that normal credit sales will be paid 1 month in arrears (on the 25th of the same month the total disappears from your account on the 5th), whilst all other sales (Getty, PP, Subs etc.) will be paid 2 months in arrears, effectively doubling the time you have to wait for non-credit sales.
