Veer / Re: My new uploads disappeared from Veer MP
« on: July 29, 2009, 11:57 »
Hi All -

Your images are not missing, they are still in the system - but there is an error that causes images to be "hidden" until they have been caught in the search reindex and are available externally. That's why you are seeing files "reappear" the next day.

We have identified that this is indeed a bug, and will be rolling out a fix in the next few days. Once fixed - images and counts will be correct in your dashboard.

It will still take up to 24 hours for your newly approved files to be caught in the next search reindex (there's no way around that), but at least you'll have an accurate sense of where your files are.  ;)

Apologies for the confusion this has caused. Thanks for reporting these issues.

SnapVillage.com / Re: SnapVillage Closure on August 1st
« on: July 27, 2009, 15:55 »
Brian,

How are you going to direct the SV customers to veer marketplace?

It is important that they don't lose faith in anything you are trying to do.

Hi Cidepix -

Good question:  we are reaching out to SnapVillage customers this week - including direct calls to those who have subscriptions. They'll be offered a better package on Marketplace.

We'll also be setting up a Marketplace branded splash page and redirects to capture any inbound SnapVillage traffic going forward. This will go live on the 1st.

SnapVillage.com / SnapVillage Closure on August 1st
« on: July 27, 2009, 15:24 »
Hi All -

As we accelerate the final stages of the transition from SnapVillage to Veer Marketplace, we will be shutting down www.SnapVillage.com  this Saturday, August 1st.

Any remaining unpaid royalties will be paid out on September 15th. We will pay out any and all accrued royalties, regardless of whether or not the remaining balance meets the $10 payout threshold.

We will retain access to image files in the system for no more than 30 days in order to ensure remaining customers have adequate time to download previously purchased files.  After 30 days, all files will be removed. There are no steps that you need to take - this will happen automatically.

After we've completed and confirmed the final royalty payout - your accounts will be removed as well.

If you have any questions - please email:   [email protected]

Thanks,

- Brian

Note that this information reflects data starting from yesterday onwards. As we've now switched to a fully credit-based purchase and royalty system and are paying royalties according to the VMP royalty rate card, stats from the Phase 1 Preview of Veer Marketplace are not included.

Brian,

When I do a search on veer marketplace for any keyword I get en error I didn't used to get on veer. It says "A script on this page causes internet explorer run slow and your computer can become unresponsive"

Yes, it does become unresponsive. I don't get this error when I use google chrome. This problem may be preventing many internet explorer users find what they want and customers may be getting pissed right now.. I don't know if you are aware of the issue.

Cidepix -

Meant to ask - what version of IE are you seeing this on?

Thanks!

Hi cidepix -

Thanks for reporting this bug - I believe our developers are aware of this particular issue, but I'll pass your findings on to them just in case.

Brian

I was one of the contributors to SV whose images were transferred. I checked the site today and I see all my approved photos, but there are no descriptions against any of them. I remember a much earlier post saying that would be corrected. Is that still the case, or do I have to enter new descriptions.

Also, the keywords are just a subset of what we originally present - do I need to do anything about that?

Steve

Hi steheap -

I'll double-check on this - it's possible the system is still processing this info.

Just so I'm clear: do you mean that they are not showing up on your Dashboard -> Approved?
Have you also checked to see if the descriptions are showing up on the detail pages as well?

If you have a chance - let me know - that will help us sort this out.

See example on this page for a description on a detail page:  description is visible beneath the title and name:

My approved files are in my dashboard again...

But,where is earnings summary,statistic etc.?

Hi Borg -

I'll have more news on this later today in the full rundown:  but you can find basic real-time information for # of views, # of downloads and total royalties earned for each file on the Approved tab of your Dashboard.

Note that this information reflects data starting from yesterday onwards. As we've now switched to a fully credit-based purchase and royalty system and are paying royalties according to the VMP royalty rate card, stats from the Phase 1 Preview of Veer Marketplace are not included.

Hi All -

If you're not seeing your files - rest assured they are still in our system.

*** One thing to check first ---- if you have NOT completed the royalty and withholding tax registration process yet - please do so now. You must complete this step before your images are searchable and can be licensed. ***

To do this: click the "provide more information" link in the text at the top of your workspace to enter in royalty payment and withholding tax information to complete your registration. This will remove the hold on your files.

Your images should show up within 24 hours afterward (during the next search refresh).

« on: July 27, 2009, 11:25 »
Just realized that everyone clicking on a Veer marketplace pic gets to see the photographers real name. Is there a way to stop this?

For me it would be a show stopper if it is not possible to hide my microstock endeavours from current or potential direct clients.

Are you with Bigstockphoto as well? I believe anyone can see your real name also when you click on the photographer Bio!

That is exactly the reason why I don't sell via BigStock.

Hi All -

Yup - we're still working on a few things. I'll have a complete rundown of what's new a bit later today.

But this is an important change: You now have more ways to control how your name/company/brand are displayed:

*** there is a new "alias" field on your Member page under Contact Information. This will replace your full name across the site - including on Image detail pages. Input your name and click "save changes". The change will take effect almost immediately.

*** You can also elect to input a Company name - this will display on product detail pages, and will display underneath yoru full name on your Member page.

Veer / Re: trouble uploading model releases on Veer
« on: July 21, 2009, 19:20 »
Is anyone else having trouble uploading model releases to Veer? I click on the create new model release, fill in Name, age, race and link to the file. When I click on create NOTHING. I contacted their support and they said nothing is wrong with my model release and it uploaded fine for them. I can also only see about half my accepted photos. ANyone else having similar trouble?

                                                            HELP  :(

Hi myeyecandy -

One thing to check if support didn't run through this with you already:  which browser are you using?

Some of the fancier controls are pretty dependent on newer technologies only supported by the most recent generation of browsers. Personally I find FF 3.0 works well. You'll need to enable Javascript to use the VMP workflow properly - if that happens to be unchecked (tools -> options -> content).

Veer / Re: Veer Marketplace watermark.
« on: July 21, 2009, 19:07 »
Hi All -

There will indeed be a new watermark - it's one of the changes included in the customer-facing launch (coming soon!). I think you'll find it will make it difficult for anyone wanting to pilfer your images. ;)

As you know, stock agencies must balance the need to protect content with giving customer's a clear look at the image (who often have to present the image to their own clients prior to purchase). Veer's design customers are likely to be using comps for mockups and client approval - hence the availability of an un-watermarked file for comping.

Increasingly though we see that designers/firms/agencies are more often simply buying microstock content for mocks - inexpensive enough for larger projects and they can get a clearer more flexible file to help sell their concept to their clients. We've talked to some who end up buying a ton of microstock priced content so as to have lots of comping options to present.    Interesting shift!

Veer / Re: Veer! This is ridiculous...
« on: July 17, 2009, 18:48 »
Hi All -

Thanks to cidepix for bringing this up:  over the past 24 hours we've investigated this problem and have implemented a short-term fix that will allow us to accept vector files affected by these issues, and still deliver high-quality JPEG previews.

We're still tracking down the reasons behind these problems (and why they may have only affected some files) - but this fix should allow you uploading again.

Beyond this we'll be looking at all of our options (not only tweaks to our rendering engine) to make sure we've got a vector ingest system that works well for you. It may take some time, but we'll keep you updated and will solicit your feedback as needed.

[ One note: you're right - there is not currently a 'resubmit' button, so you'll need to reupload these from scratch. ]

 - Brian

Thanks Brian,

There are 34 files to be resubmitted and keyworded.. Should I wait until you implement a resubmit button and then just upload the files without needing to re-enter the keywords?

If it's going to take very long to implement a resubmit button, then I might re-upload..

As I understand, I don't need to change the files but just resubmit them again as they are, which sounds great.

Quick solution! Hope it works fine..

Hi cidepix -

Don't wait  - go ahead and resubmit those files now (keywords and all).

Veer / Outage Saturday July 18th
« on: July 16, 2009, 19:51 »
Hi All -

We've got some tinkering to do behind the scenes that requires us to take the site down for a bit this weekend.

Veer.com (including Veer Marketplace and Veer Ideas) will be down for maintenance beginning at 8AM MST this Saturday, July 18th. The outage is scheduled to last for approximately four hours.

We'll post an update here when things are back up.

Thanks,

- Brian

But, it will be 2 month...that's less than DT but more than some other, to be exactly 2 month more.
I'm really really strained on all of this veer hipe. Looks like they extending any terms of the competitors near to the max, but second behind the worst case.
If they sell like hell, or second i start uploading.

I don't view it as a forced lock-in. They are saying that the customer who has the image in their shopping cart, or the customer who has already purchased the file, will be able to download it from the site for 60 days. They are saying that images may appear on partner sites for up to 60 days. I think this is reasonable because they are not able to guarantee that the partner sites will pull them down immediately. I could be wrong but the wording to me reads very differently in tone and intent than the DT agreement.

Hi All -

Whatalife is spot on: images will most likely be removed quicker than that in most cases - but this segment of the agreement covers several "worst case" scenarios: customer leaving an image in their cart for an extended length of time, or the possibility down the road of collaborations with partner sites that may require extra time to pull a file. We're certainly not out to hold any images hostage, but want to be up front that in certain situations it may take a bit of time.

Hope that helps clarify.

I had a couple images sent to soft rejection due to this. From my understanding you should only use DIRECTLY RELEVANT keywords. I omitted those IN-direct relevant ones and they were subsequently approved.
ok, my example: a still life of flowers and beverage.
irrelevant , from my understanding, were words like - garden, gardening, summer,
warm, zen, meditation. keywords that were allowed elsewhere with the Big 6; confer the word zen, meditation in any of the Big 6 to see what I mean.

Given this explanation, I would like to reiterate that I am very pleased with Veers,
their culture and their review. In fact, one rejection latest, the reviewer suggested to me to erase off a part of my isolated image , to perharps make it more sellable and more impact. I get this to be helpful, as most rejections from the Big 6 don't even bother suggesting anything other than the can responses.

Big time happy with Veers this one. Now, when I see sales and regular download, I will cheers louder.

Hi All -

Perseus is spot on.

We require that keywords be relevant to the image - and not derived from tangential connections between the terms themselves.
Relevant keywords should always tie back to the primary subject, important image attributes (such as a repeated dominant color) or clearly represented concepts. It's not necessary (or helpful) to keyword unimportant tertiary details (such as items/colors/actions that are incidental or occur in the background of the frame).

While keywording (especially when working on a large batch)  it's very easy to start making connections between the terms themselves - and this can lead to terms that are only tangentially related to the image. If you find that a term only makes sense on your image if you have to craft a story about the image - that term may not be the best fit from a buyers perspective (they may not get the story that connects the terms to the image).  ;)

This is especially true with conceptual terms - like the example of "zen" in Perseus' image. A customer searching on "zen" or "meditation" is not likely to find a still life of flowers and a beverage relevant.

One obvious way to consider a term if you get stuck (and it's likely many of you do this already)  --- consider the term from a image buyers perspective: if you searched on a term, would the image make sense if it appeared in the first few pages of results?  Remember that most image buyers are busy - they are often working under deadlines and need to find suitable images for a project quickly. The more we can do to ensure that they are getting search results that are helpful and relevant - the more likely they are to keep using the site and hopefully make a purchase.

One note of caution: Some popular keyword tools/generators available on the web are built around thesaurus style engines - and while these tools can be helpful to generate lots of keywords quickly - these long lists of terms may not be best for your image.

Good keywording can be a challenge. It is both an art and science. But we've got your back - we've got an amazing CV (controlled vocabulary) that helps flesh out your images with lots of broader terms, synonyms and spelling variants. We've also got a superstar team of keywording experts at Veer that will help get you up to speed on our keywording standards. We're working on ways that you can get to know them more in the future.

Having said all that - I agree that finding ways to more clearly indicate which terms are problematic will help everyone get up to speed on our standards. For now - our editors will try to include more specifics in the rejection reason comment field whenever possible. Long-term - we'll look at features or tools to accomplish this.

This is just a start - but for more specifics - check our Keywording FAQ:

« on: July 02, 2009, 16:31 »
Hi All -

Thanks again for reporting these issues.

Apologies some of you are still stuck or unable to use your preferred FTP client.
Our team is investigating - we'll update this thread and the Marketplace Forum with further info and updates.

One thing that may help some folks get up and running in the meantime - here's a request to those that are not having FTP upload trouble  - please post the client you are using (thanks GoldenAngel!).

We want to get you uploading and submitting ASAP. Thanks for your patience while we work these kinks out.

- Brian

One quick follow-up note:
We've found a bug that could be causing errors for some:  if you have changed the email address associated with your Veer Marketplace account - you will get the "home directory inaccessible" error when uploading via FTP.
While we work on a fix - those of you who have changed your account email might consider temporarily changing it back.

Yup, having problems here, too. My upload always fails after approx. half of the file is uploaded, with a 'Connection closed by server' error message.
Tried it with Filezilla and Total Commander over several days now, no difference.

Hi All -

Thanks for reporting these FTP issues.
We've confirmed an issue with the latest versions of FileZilla - the latest patch/hotfix (the app will automatically check for updates on startup) seems to cause this issue resulting in the "failed to retrieve directory listing" error. We weren't able to replicate this error on older versions.

We've notified the folks at FileZilla and are investigating further. In the meantime, we suggest switching to an alternate client. For Windows we've tested and confirmed that CoreFTP is working fine. Fetch is working well for OS X.
