Veer / Re: Veer Marketplace Opens for Submissions!
« on: June 08, 2009, 18:47 »
Most of my images from SV were transferred, but not all. I also have the problems that many of the keyword are incorrect or missing. Some of my thumbnails are also missing.

Hi Oboy -

Thanks for the PM - we're currently investigating the keyword issue on transferred content.

Images that are not showing up have not yet been loaded, - these will display as "blanks" until they have been processed by the system. It may take another week or two to finish loading and processing content transferred from SnapVillage.

Hi massman -

Thanks for rerporting this.
I'll PM you to get the details. This definitely sounds like an error.

We'll be diving into investigate this issue now.

Hi Brian,

Could investigate my earlier post in the other (June 8th) thread on this subject as well.

Hi RT -

I'll PM you for specific details as well (asset IDs et al). We'll investigate.
Thanks for highlighting this on the other thread - it's been a buy day!  ;)

Yeah, same here. I understand that currently we are unable to edit our keywords, descriptions etc, is there going to be a fix for the 'keyword jumble' ?

To give one example form my portfolio at Veer:

Image
Glass of orange juice with two halves of an orange set against white.

Keywords
auctions, authority, close-ups, courtrooms, equitable, freedom, gavels, guilt, hammering, honesty,  more innocence, isolated, judges, judgment, justice, law enforcement, law reporters, lawyers, mallets, nobody, punishment, real, rules, still lifes, symbols, trials, white background, wisdom, wood

As you can see, it's bonkers.

As delighted as I am to be with Veer, my chances of selling are going to be very slim with tagging like this. I hope this issue can be resolved quickly.

I had a question about the extended licenses. I didn't see any options for it in the upload process. I also didn't see them available when you try to purchase a file. I just wanted to know if there was an opt in/opt out for that?

Hi cthoman -

There is no opt-out for extended licenses. All files will be available for buyers who need extended license options.

Once we roll out the full buyer-side Marketplace release later this summer, there will be on page options for buyers to select one or more extended license options. Currently this must be done via Veer customer service.

Love it so far Bryan! The interface is clean and easy to navigate, the site is responsive, the upload process was painless. Little details make our life easier like the online W8BEN and the fact that we didn't have to get the notorious ITIN or EIN (for individuals like me).

The next couple of days will be a good stress test for your platform and your poor reviewers... lol. Good luck to them and good luck to all of us saleswise :)

Hi Talanis -

Thanks for the kind words. We worked hard to make the potentially onerous IRS withholding tax process as painless as possible.

Welcome to Veer Marketplace!

Veer Marketplace Opens for New Submissions!

Were excited to announce that as of today, June 8th, Veer Marketplace is now open and accepting submissions!

This means you can now sign-up and apply to become a Veer Marketplace contributor. Once you pass an entrance exam (submit 10 of your best shots for our editors to examine) and then complete royalty and tax information --- youll be ready to start uploading your full portfolio.

By submitting your content now, youll be sure to have completed the approval process and to be in the system so your portfolio is ready to go for the buyer-focused launch in mid-summer.

Weve designed the Veer Marketplace ingest and upload workflow to help you submit efficiently and to help you keyword effectively.

Some of the features were especially eager to show you:

Support for FTP or advanced HTTP web-upload
Metadata and model and property releases can be attached to multiple images at once real-live batch processing capability!
Model and property releases can be stored in the system and applied to future image uploads
Powerful controlled vocabulary and keyword auto-mapping system automatically accommodates spelling variants, common misspellings and synonyms, and includes broader search terms. This gives you more efficient, consistent, and accurate keywording. For example, if a contributor adds the term happy to their image, the system automatically adds more than a dozen other terms such as happiness, cheerful, emotion, and good mood.
Automatic creation of preview images in JPEG format for images uploaded in EPS format, such as illustrations. This means faster and more accurate uploads for vector artists.
Youll have the option of selecting between PayPal and Payoneer as payment options during sign-up. If you decide to go with Payoneer, in the next few weeks following sign-up well send you a link to the Payoneer site where youll complete registration, and soon have your Veer Marketplace branded debit-Mastercard in hand for use in virtually any online, retail or ATM.
   No categories!

This is only the beginning.
The platform needs your input were actively soliciting feedback and feature suggestions to help enhance future releases.

Head to  http://contributor.veer.com  to get started now!

We look forward to welcoming you into the Veer community, and to seeing the great images and illustrations youve been creating over the past few months!

Does anyone know if the approved application files go directly into your portfolio, or if that is a separate step, as it is on iStock? It's not exactly clear.

I Doubt that it has any workflow similarity as on iStock - It should be on high level of profesionalism than amateurism on iStock... I believe it is one-go through... But, still there may be some catch...
Thanks for the helpful reply. Is there a reason you think this other than your hatred for istock?

Does anyone actually know for sure? I'd appreciate the input. If nothing else, I'm sure Brian will be by to clarify. I have uploaded my 10 samples, but I can't submit until I know for sure.

Hi Whatalife -

No separate step required.
If your account is approved by our editors, any of the initial 10 that are passed will be part of your portfolio.

As an aside - wow!  We haven't sent out official communication on today's news yet, let alone account details or log-in information for those transferred from SnapVillage. You all are motivated - I'm impressed!  ;)

- Brian

183
Has anybody who's images were transferred in from SV had their account log-in information sent to them yet?

No nothing as yet.

Hi All -

We will be sending out emails to those who have content that was transferred from SnapVillage with links and instructions as well as a temporary password.
This email will go out later today. If you are in this group - do not create a new account today in the meantime. Please wait for the email.

Thanks,

- Brian

Hi All -

We'll be loading another large batch of content this weekend, so if you are not seeing your portfolio, or it is missing files - it's very likely your content is still in the queue and will be up soon.

- Brian

Brian, do you have some initial review due to that I already have over 800 online files on many other agencies or reviewing just portfolio link will be enough for me to upload?
I've read somewhere that new contributors will need 10 initial files...
So, what to do in my case?

Hi Milinz

Even if you have files up on other agencies - you'll still need to submit your 10 "audition" files. If those look good you're approval will be quick. This is an integral part of the sign-up process for new contributor accounts on Veer Marketplace.

- Brian

Thanks for info!

Is there possible to send both illustrations and photographs?

Hi Milinz -

Yes. We'll accept photos in JPEG format, or illustrations in JPEG or .EPS vector format.
Your 10 initial submission can be images, illustrations or a mix of both.

Veer / Re: Veer Marketplace Royalties
« on: May 29, 2009, 13:51 »
So, has anyone got any royalties from Veer yet? Where do they show?

they don't show yet, they get sent via email at the end of the month, May 9 last month.

Zeus is correct. Royalties earned during the Phase 1 Preview version of Marketplace (the one your images are live on now) will be reported via email - you will receive this no later than the 10th, and if you earned enough for a payout ($10 or more), payment will be deposited into your PayPal account on the 15th.

Once the full version of Marketplace launches later this summer you'll have live reporting directly in your Marketplace account.

Veer / Re: Some glitches with the website
« on: May 21, 2009, 16:42 »
Well, looks like nobody at Veer is interested in bug reports.

Hi Maui -

I'm working to confirm, but I believe this to be intentional.
When you are logged in the system it uses your stored address and country to provide you the correct default language and search experience.

As people who don't have an account or haven't logged in don't have a stored country of residence, the "choose your location" drop-down is visible.

It seems like a good idea to be able to change this even when logged in, but I want to dig a bit further to see if this is indeed possible.

As far as search sort options - we're looking at adding some sort options later this year.

In terms of 'blanks' - let me know if you are still seeing those. We've been working hard to load lots of product recently and sometimes there is a bit of lag time between the image showing up in results and the thumbnail and preview images being loaded.

Hope this helps.

Best,

- Brian

I had about 1000 images on SV, and now I have about 250 on VMP.

I'm kind of wondering about that, too.  I was able to find my gallery there, and it's just a small portion of what I have on SV.  Back when the StockXpert/photos.com/JIU thing erupted, they indicated that all StockXpert images would be available on the other sites.  I've found several of my images that are available on StockXpert, but are not on photos.com/JIU.  I suspect that there really was a screening process, and I'm wondering if there will be something similar with the transition to Veer.

Then that begs the question, if some of our images which sell well on other sites are "screened" out by Veer, would there be anything preventing a contributor to go through the normal submission channel with their "screened-out" images?

Hi Jsolie and Perry -

The rest of your portfolios will be loaded soon.
The content that went up last weekend was just a partial load - we wanted to start getting content live as soon as possible, at the cost of not having your entire batch go live at once.

More will be rolling out onto the site over the coming weeks.

Its clear how Veer has placed the customer in first place, forgetting the rights and wishes of those that create and manufacture that which the customer wants. To continue making the customer happy you have to have the content that some of us are not willing to deliver for such prices. To those who are willing to work for almost nothing, remember the newspapers that are going under for distributing their information free on the Net. For Veer marketpalce - good luck in your search for slave labour. I for one will be out of Snap/Veerplace

I just read Brian's post to be that the royalty structure has not yet been announced for Veer.  Am I missing something?

I don't want to upload for slave wages either, but I didn't think that was what we were talking about here...

Hi Lisafx -

Sorry if that was confusing. We did announce the royalty rates - they have not changed.
I was mentioning an updated rate card that displays the per credit royalties as well as the credit pack cost in non-US$ currencies (the latter was missing from the earlier version). Royalties are set - check the initial post, and the documents up at the Veer Submissions page for more info:

http://submissions.veer.com/

I'll be offline for most of this week - but Aaron will have the updated card that includes foreign currency conversion for credit packs. He'll be checking in here while I'm offline.

Brian,

Any comments on my referral program post?
Thanks!

Hi goldenangel -

Yes - great feedback - thank you!    :D
I'll make sure to keep your suggestion handy when we push forward on referral programs.

In the submission guidelines:

Quote
Balanced highlights and shadows (RGB shadows no lower than 5, highlights
should not be higher than 250)

I am going to guess that many potential contributors will find that their JPEGS do not exactly fit this criteria. Particularly as there is invariably a shift as one switches from 16 bit to 8 bit in the workflow and then again, potentially, on the final creation of a JPEG.

251, 252 ... 253 even ? Photoshop, Lightroom and Aperture all have a tendency to effectively push or stretch the histogram slightly to the right when converting to JPEG.

This also excludes anything which is isolated on white.

I wonder whether these submission requirements have been copied over from some other document which related to tifs.

Hi Alias -

Those are suggestions, and not hard rules. Highlights above 250 won't be cause for rejection.
I'll check in with our resident Lightroom expert - you might be right that those figures are mainly relevant for TIFFs, or at least warrants additional explanation.

Good catch - thanks!

- Brian

They charge UK customers 1 for XS and pay contributors 0.35 cents which is about %20 of the sale price 1

Hi All -

Actually, that's not quite right.
Apologies for the confusion, totally understood --- gonna try to help clear this up:

The royalty rates we announced are for the full-buyer side launch of Marketplace which will happen later this summer. As part of that launch the purchase changes to a credit based model. It looks like some of the confusion stems from this shift.

To clear up the confusion on credit prices in foreign currencies:

Credit pricing is based off US$.  Credits are sold in credit packs - with the smallest quantity pack starting at 10 credits.
The price we charge for a credit pack in Euros or GBP or CAD$ is just the US$ multiplied by the prevalent exchange rate for the month. We'll update the foreign currency credit prices monthly.

We protect you by always paying in US$ - and thus you are not subject to any foreign currency risk. We take all the foreign currency risk -  for example when rates swing wildly in a month. So because we are just converting at the prevalent currency conversion rate for the month,  all of the contributor royalty rates are the same no matter what the currency we charge is.

Additionally, we have not announced royalties as a flat percentage, as the rate will vary with the cost of a credit. The more credits someone buys, the lower the credit costs, which in effect nets a higher royalty percent.

Aaron and I will get an updated version of the rate card to you soon that should lay this out a bit more clearly.

Let's just discuss.. Just do some brainstorming on why many of you so eagerly want to help veer become a success despite %35 commission and being nothing special..

Let's give the reasons to why support a new website that comes with an exciting %35  commission.

Since Brian loves to answer questions here and be friendly but he doesn't seem to notice my questions about commissions I thought we would just brainstorm..

I am sure Brian is aware that I wanted to help him to get an idea about vectors by starting a pole on reliability of rivals. And I am again sure Brian is aware that it is very natural that I am asking for %50 commission on the content I DID CREATE.. (not veer, me)

I don't know why are you people so loving to help veer despite they are getting your content for FREE and paying you %35.. I would like and extra website to sell my images as well (like all of you) so that's why convince me about %35 please.

Stand now! Do not submit! and they will have to come begging you with probably even more than %50 which you deserve. Why do you think they are here trying to market veer so desperately.

Veer needs you! You don't need veer at this point!

Hi Cidepix:

I don't mind talking about the Veer Marketplace royalty structure. Apologies if I missed your questions in other threads.

Now - about Veer:

We disagree - we do think Veer is pretty special.

Veer.com has been recognized by buyers as one of the most user-friendly and well-designed sites in the industry.  Veer has been successful because it has always focused on the customer, on every level - from an inspiring brand, to design savvy marketing, plus good website UI, and superior customer service.

While Veer Marketplace is a new part of Veer, Veer isn't new at all. Veer has a passionate following among designers, photographers and illustrators - and has been around for 7 years now. Veer is actually a pretty big player - probably one of the larger stock sites around after Corbis.com and Getty/Jupiter.

We've created a royalty structure for Veer Marketplace that will help us build a long-term sustainable business, which in turn will help push more sales and more royalties your way. From our research, based upon not only royalty percentages and per credit royalties - but also image prices and subscription download rates - we're roughly on par with most of the biggest guns in microstock, as well on par with royalties paid out on the traditional RF or RM side of the industry.

We're going to be backing Veer Marketplace with high quality marketing efforts, great web design, high-performance servers and storage units. That doesn't come for free --- distributors like Veer or iStock or incur big costs to market content and create and support a loyal customer base.

As you have all seen with the ups and downs of this industry and with individual agencies themselves  - building a successful stock site is really hard work - it costs lots of $$, and takes time - some luck too!

Of course - we'll need to build a passionate and supportive contributor community for this to work at all.... and as you all know - that will take time and lots of hard work too. ;)

[ It's certainly not as simple as responding to a few question on this forum by any means. It will take patience and some trust from all sides. ]

As others have said about Veer Marketplace already - "the proof is in the pudding".
We're a month away from launching the contributor side of Marketplace, and a few months away from launching the buyer side. I'd ask that before you decide you don't want to be part of Marketplace, consider waiting and checking things out yourself.

Is there a referral program in place for photographers? Can we join right away or we need to wait until June 8th? When will the present members of SV be able to login to veer? Do they need to register separately?

Hi goldenangel -

Good questions. Here are the answers (and a question):

- There won't be a referral program setup right away.
What kind of program would you like to see in place?

- You can create an account on Veer.com now, and begin participating in the Veer Marketplace group on Veer Ideas. You'll be able to start uploading on June 8th.

- All users (new or the contributors selected from migration to Snap) will be able to log-in beginning on June 8th.

- Selected contributors migrated from Snap will be sent account and log-in details around June 8th. If you've already created an account on Veer.com, our team will map your content to the existing Veer.com account. If you haven't created an account - our team will automatically create an account for you.

Brian

196
Brian,
I think your timing couldn't be more perfect.

I have a few questions about the illustration side. Will vectors automatically be generated into jpeg versions available at all sizes? Are there posted guidelines for vector submissions?

Hi whatalife -

Yes.
No need to upload a preview JPEG --- rasterized JPEGs will be created automatically.

There are basic vector guidelines included with the general Marketplace submission guidelines doc here:
http://www.veer.com/download/pdf/vmp_submission_guidelines.pdf

The basics:

- .EPS format
- AI8 compatible
- No open paths
- No stray points or objects
- Avoid transparency and other raster effects that arent AI8 compatible
- Ensure paste board size is the same size as illustration

197
So, will notifications be sent out to contributers to Snapvillage, as to whether they made the cut, before June 8th?

Yes - you'll hear by mid-May at the latest.

198

Looks alright. I like how subscriptions won't just be 30 cents for all sizes. 20 cents for xsmall is a bit depressing but hopefully there wont be many of them... I couldn't find any information on what the pixel dimensions for each size will be, have you decided on that yet Brian?

Hi Kngkyle -

Great question  - we have - the minimums for each size are as follows:

XSmall = 300 x 400
Small = 600 x 800
Medium = 1200 x 1600
Large = 1920 x 2560
XLarge = 2800 x 4200
XXLarge = 3300 x 4900

We'll make sure this info is included in future versions of the FAQ and Submission Guidelines documents.
