Dreamstime.com / Re: Rejection policy or NOT!
« on: July 31, 2010, 16:04 »
I don't know. If you look under the tab "Latest Submissions" you will see egg noodles, a spring landscape, a hand with money, a dark chocolate bar, a woman with a gift package, an apple with a tape measure around it, tomatoes and a "beautiful young model". Nothing unique, nothing that doesn't have stiff competition. I don't get it.

Why do people still do the apple and tapemeasure? I'm sure the last twelve thousand versions can't have sold well.

I've never had a "not what we're looking for"-rejection, but I do get quite a few "too similar"s (often for one out of a "series" of one horizontal and one vertical shot or a "series" of ice cream sundaes, for example, one chocolate, one raspberry, one vanilla - too much of the same for DT), and I can't stop wondering why so many people seem to get about five to fifteen very similar shots through inspection.

I think my latest payment, earlier this month, took less than 10 days.

Same here. It's been like that the last three or four times for me.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Istock raises upload limits
« on: July 30, 2010, 16:43 »
I'm really happy about this! After having neglected istock for a long time in favor of FT as my best site, I'm having a hard time getting on my feet there. My approval rate is high, but 15 images a week as a non-exclusive bronze was just sad. I'm sure this raise will help. BTW: A few hours ago, I uploaded 3, and it said 12 left, now it says 0 uploaded, 20 left, so it seems we're starting at point zero.
I might even go and "wooo yay" over in the IS-thread  :D

Congratulations, Lisa! No need to say what a huge acheivement that is, all the more as an "independent one-man-show" which is a term I think you actually invented. Cheers to ya!

I had a batch of 100 approved a few days ago. They must have been pending for about four weeks.

But again, are we sure Yuri 'won' this battle? For all we know he just could have bumped into a lenient reviewer; search results show definitely not all similars are rejected (also from other submitters), some reviewers seem to be a lot more strict on this one than others.

I agree. It must depend on the reviewers. Many small fish still have endless series of the same subject. Someone linked a search result with about 50 images of the same pizza here recently (that was nowhere near showing various expressions ;D) . The DT reviewers do seem to actually look into portfolios - I've had quite a few rejects for "too similar" images that were several batches apart from eachother. It does p me off quite a bit, because I am responsible with similars, as cclapper put it, and I never submit more than 3 of one subject, mostly one horizontal, one vertical, and often one tilted (I shoot food).

iStockPhoto.com / Re: 'Promotional Uses' Explained

Thanks for pointing out, averil. You might be right that designers "discover" contributors whose work they like that way.

Fully agree, cclapper and madeleide. And the promotion thing doesn't work for non-exclusives anyway - never ever will an independent get an IOTW (or anything else special) at istock. So I'm not sure it matters for independents whether they are opted-in or not. But I must say, I even less like the idea of other contributors using images for free in the "steel cage". Can you opt out of that?

General Stock Discussion / Re: How cheap can you get!!??
« on: July 15, 2010, 15:54 »

Of course I am highly insulted that the "perceived value" of my work is nada!!  :P

Only to really, really young, really, really poor students whose teacher only just recently told them what copyright is! A rather small subset of people who stumble into istock.  ;)

Yeah, that's the expression I was trying to find: perceived value! Thanks. :D

I'm also suprised that she actually asked for permission. Her replying "I was just going to save the images as is and use them with your permission" has a sort of naive cheek to it, although annoying. Maybe your last (very well put) reply actually got her thinking...

I teach at university, and I'm suprised what students who complain about having to pay a small amount towards class material for some seminars can afford (there's no tuition). Many of them sit around campus with a MacBook Air, and many of them I never have seen in the same outfit, not to mention the sneakers they wear...

I just noticed that in the table stating prices and commissions, 2 instead of 3 credits is given as the maximum price for non-exclusive files for emeralds. Is that just a typo on the German page? I'm sure it used to be 3 credits.

Dreamstime.com / Re: Dreamstime are driving me crazy!!!
« on: June 15, 2010, 08:38 »
Dreamstimes new policy of 'no similars' is driving me crazy.

I shot a series of garden herbs, chives, coriander, basil, etc, etc, different bunches, and they will only accept one shot, so what if someone wants basil, chives, coriander, etc, etc and not mint. They have only let mint in. INSANNNNE! Sorry had to get it off my chest and there appears to be no appeals procedure for dreamstime, is there?

That's a typical case of shots that they would love you to combine to a collage - six or so for the price of one for the buyer! Doesn't it even say so in the reject note?

1) No, I haven't had any problems getting on the site.
2) No, I've never had an image seriously forgotton or lost in the queue. Normal pending time for non-exclusives is 5 days, the longest I've waited was 7 days. Next day or the day after, as you say, that's the normal pending time for full-exclusive members.

ETA: I get an error-page if I try to click onto your portfolio.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: 5dmk2 OR Studio lights!
« on: June 04, 2010, 05:17 »
Go for the lights and bits and bobs.  ;D No, really, I would. Especially if you've realized the limits of the lights you have now. To me, recognizing the limits of my equipment means it's time to move on. Good studio lights and reflectors were the first thing I invested in. Next will be a few good lenses. And after that I'll be thinking about the 5Dmk2. Are you feeling the limitations of your camera as well? Of course it depends on which limitations hurt more.

I have the same picture, cclapper. Your portfolio won't show (I can see my own, but not always), and the search for "man" yields no results. "man business" still gives a skillion though, and so does "woman".

Geez, so many people shave their heads these days.  They are not skinheads.

Yea, I never gave your username or your profile picture a second thought...

Gosh! Your title gave me a bit of a fright!  :D
Login is never smooth for me, but I always get in at the end.

No problem here - mine are being updated immediately and correctly.

How embarassing. Such a renowned publishing house. They are so concious of their reputation that it is (or at least used to be) their policy not to give away or sell with a discount faulty copies to their employees (as most other book publishers do), because they don't want members of the public to see faulty copies of their books. It can only be a mistake. Can you use a comp file at that size? Don't suppose so. I've seen istock watermarks in magazines before, but then a few pages later the same image without a watermark. That's why I'm wondering.

Adobe Stock / Re: Is location important?
« on: May 18, 2010, 11:56 »
Location is very important to many buyers for certain images - problem is they usually need more than just a country, and having a search filled with images that aren't relevant because the category is compulsory for every image makes the feature next to useless. Nice idea at the start, but the implementation is a dogs breakfast.

But buyers would find the location beyond the country (where it's relevant) within the keywords. If you search by country, isn't all you get that map that shows you how many images are from a certain country?

Adobe Stock / Re: Is location important?
« on: May 16, 2010, 12:45 »
I can't imagine that the location is in any way relevant for anyone. You can search images by country, but I think the only information you get is how many photos originate from which country.
As for editing after submission, FT's constant reply to that is that they don't want to have to inspect more than once and that they want to avoid keyword-spamming. Which is ridiculous, if you look at the keyword-spamming going on and also the awful keywords their translation tool comes up with. They have been promising to improve that for years - nothing ever happens about it.
