Adobe Stock / Re: FOTOLIA - NOW PAYING LESS THAN 16% !!!!!!
« on: February 04, 2010, 16:03 »
I have bought images and the credit amount was just deducted from my contributor's credit account. There are a lot of contributors there who are also buyers, but I imagine most of them will have seperate accounts.
It's not possible to convert credits that you have bought, though. I have never bought credits, so I don't know exactly how the difference is made between earned and bought credits. But as a contributor who has earned credits you certainly can use those credits to buy images without any kind of transforming them.

Not many people seem to have followed Fotolia's call, as expected. You can see on the "Ranking" page everyone who has recently reached a new canister level (from gold upwards). There are only two or three photographer's names that are new on that page, and I've been visiting that page quite frequently. Fotolia's "generous" gift of gold, emerald, or saphir icons to people who are successful but new to Fotolia couldn't ever be the main reason for anyone to give up their exclusivity at istock. People who are that successful know the business well enough to be aware of Fotolia's reputation in changing the rules over and over again.

You're right: The .856 wouldn't get paid out to you, you can only convert full whole credits.

Donding - if you haven't reached payout, couldn't you just buy images of your fellow contributors? FT will profit from that also, but at least you'd help someone else or a few people to reach payout. Maybe people who are going to leave there could help eachother in that way.

I'm posting anonymously right now because I can't speak my mind when it comes to Fotolia and their fascist policies.
If I'm going to close my account, it's gotta be my decision, not theirs.

That is the only reason I have always been anonymous here which I actually would rather not be.

Yes, actually I did notice. But to be fair, he does come here often to face the music, and you never know, he might not be able to be here for some reason or other.

Also, DT has now emailed me stating they will not send me my $65.00 payout as it has not reached the $100 mark. So now, they claim that I lose it or buy picture. I am mighty P*SSED about this. I always had great admiration for Dreamstime, but with all the trouble I've had lately... it sure has wained! I am going to email them. They are the only other site that has done this. All the others have offered to pay out the balance.

I don't share that experience: Bigstock and Canstock didn't pay out the balance to me. When I asked for my account to be deleted they both warned me that I would loose the money. But I was expecting that, and I didn't have any hope at all to reach payout by the date I had set myself (I had neglected them both, as I never did well there).

Oh, Lisa, so you are going exclusive now. Missed that! So you made it to the other side of the decision fence.
Well good luck to you, I hope it works well.

184
By the way, there are a few midstock agencies in Germany (let me think - I think I could name 5, panthermedia being one of them), and it seems that they are loosing ground.

:D As the second person to vote I can see that I must have voted exactly the same as you!

Not exactly. I voted for status quo, you are Veer believer :-)

Yeah, thanks, I just had noticed that!

:D As the second person to vote I can see that I must have voted exactly the same as you! Oh, no, there must be one that we disagree on.

I don't know what to assume about what will be what in 180 days time, but in the long run, it will be Shutterstock, istock, Fotolia and not much more. I'm expecting "midstock" to die out soon, especially with microstock sites raising prices as they are.

Big guns are few and they can be always "compensated" for being loyal :-)

But there might also be a few amongst the few bigguns who are simply decent people and won't be corrupted by "compensation".

Here's the offer from the German page. It should be the same all over Europe:

21 Credits = 24,00 (inklusive 1 Bonus-Credits - 1,14 /Credit)

55 Credits = 60,00 (inklusive 5 Bonus-Credits - 1,09 /Credit)

115 Credits = 120,00 (inklusive 15 Bonus-Credits - 1,04 /Credit)

180 Credits = 180,00 (inklusive 30 Bonus-Credits - 1,00 /Credit)

325 Credits = 300,00 (inklusive 75 Bonus-Credits - 0,92 /Credit)

700 Credits = 600,00 (inklusive 200 Bonus-Credits - 0,86 /Credit)

1500 Credits = 1.200,00 (inklusive 500 Bonus-Credits - 0,80 /Credit)

3200 Credits = 2.400,00 (inklusive 1200 Bonus-Credits - 0,75 /Credit)

A contributor's credit is worth 1 Euro, at least that is what has been said. The figure in the grey box which states the contributor's country and currency isn't there anymore.

Same here.   The only way I can afford to delete my portfolio is if I went exclusive with IS.  I am going to have to sit and do the math now that things have changed at IS as it seems that exclusives get a great deal there.
Strange, FT is my top performer...

Exactly my thoughts, I'm just waiting for istock to become a better earner for me - I had been concentrating on fotolia last year and have a lot of exclusive stuff there because they were so strong for me. Now I'm trying to build a stronger portfolio at istock, and off to istock I will be! I've so had enough of that place!

In istock's introduction to the information about exclusivity it says: "We don't want to share you, and we'll take very good care of you." - that sounds so soothing and tempting to me!

Don't think so! People have been having trouble with the partner sites and becoming exclusive to istock. When you've deleted them on FT, wait a while, and then contact pixmac or any other site you can still find your images on directly.

Do wait for the money to come through, artemis, nothing is safe with them.
Thankies, will do :)

By the way, probably not what you want to hear right now, but it might be better not to have your account closed, but to delete all your images yourself. That way, you keep your cannister level. You never know, if they are sold some day or some kind of miracle happens you might want to go back. But do keep in mind, if you go and keep your account with an empty port, and one day you want to go exclusive elsewhere, you will have to check their partner sites before exclusivity. Seems to take ages before pixmac and co. delete images.

Well it isn't actually a rise in price if you sell credits for various prices. The way they've thought this up, the average credit price is still $1, ranging from 0,75 to 1,20.

You're absolutly right - yet again a change has taken place, and we are waiting to be informed.  :-\

It's only the credit value that is changing, and as I said: only for buyers. You as a contributor still get $1 for every credit you earn. That has nothing to do with the cannister levels.
On the other hand: You might wake up tomorrow to find that you'll need 1500 DLs to become bronze. You never know with them.

Of course they'll keep the little extra!  ;)
Our credit value just says the same - 1 credit = 1 whatever currency.

Just in case it helps: A fotolia employee on the German forum confirmed that the credit value will stay the same for contributors and will vary for buyers from $ 0,75 to $ 1,20 (or Euros, GBP respectively) according to how many credits are purchased.

going a bit OT, did anybody remember how much better dls were when we were able to see who bought our works in FT?
at that time, I couldn't help to notice all of my images were dl-ed by European companies.  And also, I had more regular dls too, even ext licenses as well.

Then when they stopped showing us the buyers, the dls slowlly decreased.
I am not sure if it was because they changed markets with the new CEO from IS or just a coincidence.
But I remember when the markets were Euro , I did get more dls.
And also, the types of images the Euro market picked were different from the ones with the other Big 6 where I got my dls.

Do any of you notice a shift in dls? that now the images downloaded with FT  seem to be the same as what I get from the other Big 6.

I find that an interesting observation from your point of view, perseus. FT has always been by far my best earner (how I wish it was rather IS!), last year, about  1 percent of my sales were from the US. Most sales seem to be from Germany. FT certainly rules in Europe! I'm not sure whether they concentrate on the European market anyway, or whether European buyers prefer their style (whatever it may be). But I'm quite sure that part of it is their awful translation tool. Quite a few of my images which I keyword in German because of FT's position here simply don't show up on the US-site because of the poor translation, and on the other hand I'm sure that European buyers are unable to find many of the American images. We've been moaning about that for years, and they've been promising to improve it for years...

They accept about 95 percent of my images (I shoot food). Someone said here that with FT, it might depend on your overall position there how many images you get accepted. That sounds plausible to me: I've been relatively successful with them, and I upload about 5 images a day, very regularly. I'm quite sure that plays a part. I don't think it would be difficult for me to get images of flowers accepted.

I quite agree with Lisa and ap, but if you've really fallen in love with food photography and want to stick to it, do at least specialize in Japanese food beyond the typical sushi shots and do go round the markets and shoot the food presented there.

This guy's blog has lovely food photography and solid introductory information on camera types, lighting, white balance and so on:

What if the agencies got rid of the affilliate programmes? Such search engines wouldn't have any earning potential then, and the agencies wouldn't have to compete with each other to achieve the lowest price. Also, they'd be saving the percentage they have to pay to their affilliates for each sale. Or are these affilliate programmes an absolutely necessary marketing tool?

You can also get to the forums you're not supposed to see by entering English key words into the forum search. It gives you threads where your search word occurs, and the threads take you to the legal bord or the fotolia caf or wherever. But when you click on the main index, you're taken back to your "home" forum.

Hey stardust,

Thanks for sharing a useful tip! It doesn't give excluded members the chance to contribute though does it?

I've no idea, and I didn't dare try it out, in case fotolia gets rid of that "bug"!

Also, I'm so fed up with them at the moment, that I've forbidden myself to write anything for the next couple of weeks - I'm sure I'd get chucked out sooner or later, and in some cases you just need the information from their forum: The official statement from fotolia Germany about contributors not needing an ITIN was only published on their forum.
