General Stock Discussion / Dump sites?
« on: October 30, 2023, 03:33 »
Which sites have the easiest uploads? (I mean REALLY EASY!)

Hello, I haven't been uploading anything since 2017 (I think?),
I have some income from my old uploads to various sites back in the days.

I was wondering if there is a site that I've missed that has ridiculously easy
upload process where I could dump thousands of images and I would get
at least some more earnings?

At which sites you don't need to click on individual images, select categories etc.,
just click a few buttons for a big batch of images and you're done?

EDIT the sites I'm interested from the right side of this forum: Vecteezy, MotionElements, Indivstock, Pixt, 500px... and maybe others if you know anything easy and worthwhile outside these.

Shutterstock.com / Why are my images still selling?
« on: June 19, 2020, 04:00 »
I deactivated my portfolio in the end of May, but I noticed a couple of my images had been sold 19/06/2020 ($7.80). Why? What?

Microstock Audio / No mono?
« on: November 23, 2018, 08:21 »
I have never submitted sound effects to any of the sites. I read the file requirements to Pond5 and AudioJungle, but both said they do not accept mono files. That is really odd, because foley artists etc. many times record everything in mono.

So, do I really have to record sound effects in stereo, or should I just fake it by converting to stereo (with a possible effect that makes the channels a bit different)?

General Stock Discussion / Stock Photos in Real Life
« on: June 19, 2015, 16:47 »
I thought this video was a bit funny. "Peter and Mike find out what happens when our office becomes a bunch of stock photos in real life." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKslVql78BU

Featurepics.com / Redesign?
« on: May 21, 2015, 05:25 »
Am I wrong or have they redesigned the site lately?

Also to my surprise I have had a few sales this month!

Newbie Discussion / All about Model Releases (Please tell me!)
« on: February 21, 2015, 07:35 »
I'm not really a newbie, I have been shooting microstock for over 10 years. I have shot mostly objects, places and body parts.
I have been submitting all my photos with recognizable people as macrostock.

But now I have shot a series of images with people I would like to submit to microstock sites.

What is the easiest way to handle the model releases? Is there a model release that works with all (or nearly all) agencies?

Are some sites more troublesome than others with model releases?

Any tips or other considerations before I start this?

When I'm making new images, I'm only submitting them to a few sites straight away. The rest of the sites I upload only in the end of the month. What really bugs me is the sites with daily (or weekly) upload limits. For example Stockfresh allowd me to upload only 50/day. I think they should move to a monthly limit, or at least a weekly limit. How about 300 images/week or 1000 images/month would sound?

The other ridiculous example is Crestock, how can they afford to have upload limits (I think it's 75/week) and yet they seem to take months to review my images...

All sites with daily upload limits, could you consider a weekly limit instead? And those with weekly limit, could you consider a monthly limit? This would help contributors that upload in bulk, and also new contributors.

General Stock Discussion / When did you have your BMEs?
« on: September 27, 2012, 05:57 »
I'm interested in when you did have your last BME (Best Month Ever) on different sites? I think this will tell a lot about the trends. I started to think about this when DT seems to be resurrected from the dead again :)

My stats:
IS: March 2011
SS: July 2012
DT: May 2009 (September 2012 might be a new BME, just a few dollars short)
FT: September 2010 (nowdays about 70% less earnings than back then)
Veer: April 2012
Bigstockphoto: April 2012
123rf: February 2012

Shutterstock.com / US Source / Non US Source
« on: September 05, 2012, 05:17 »
I was just looking at my payment history page ( http://submit.shutterstock.com/payment_history.mhtml ) and thought if everybody has the same percentage of earnings from US Source vs. Non US Source?

My stats (I calculated from only 2 last payments, but they were big ones, 2000+ dollars each):

US Source 25%
Non US Source 75%
Located in Europe

I would be interested to hear if yo have similar figures...?

General Stock Discussion / Do you have (microstock) secrets?
« on: August 01, 2012, 06:44 »
I have a few. I upload to two sites "nobody" is talking about (they have been mentioned here, they aren't that exotic!) and I get decent returns (think "half of what Fotolia earns me").
I don't want to talk about them, all microstockers rushing to the sites might spoil it, I'll rather have my own money :)

I have some photo techniques I don't want to share/show to anyone, because I haven't seen any other doing them the same way as I do, I have even tried to google them but got no results. Some of them are DIY lighting mods that give interesting results and some other save time and makes life easier.

I don't showcase my portfolio here, especially my bestsellers. I don't want them to be copied to death (it's already happening....)

How about your secrets?

General Stock Discussion / If I had a time machine
« on: July 28, 2012, 05:15 »
If I had a time machine, I would burn my current microstock portfolio on some DVDs and travel back to 2003 and upload the images to IS and SS.
In 2012 I would propably be a millionnaire.  ;D
I remember the times when a crappy image could sell tens of times per day, but I had a very tiny portfolio back then.

Too bad my images aren't that hot selling today...   ::)

General Stock Discussion / Best summer slowdown ever?
« on: July 26, 2012, 06:18 »
It has been a very strange summer: I had best month ever in june and july is also very strong. Especially SS and 123RF are doing well, and even IS and DT has been nice. Anyone else think this is the best summer slowdown ever? Can't wait for the next few months when the real selling begins... haven't felt this optimistic in years :)

Shutterstock.com / Replacing a file at SS
« on: May 16, 2012, 04:59 »
I just noticed one of my new images have a slight retouching error. The image is still selling very well, and I would not like to delete it and risk my improved version doesn't get accepted or downloaded. Do you know if the support is nice enough to replace my file with a new one?

14
You all know that print media has been in decline in the last years, and it will be declining also in future.

I see the average size of images sold is getting smaller and smaller. more xsmall and small sizes, less large and xlarge.

I think microstock sites should revise their pricing. Small sizes up and big sizes down. What do you think?

15
General Stock Discussion / Do you like your bestsellers?
« on: April 02, 2012, 10:15 »
Of course we all like images that sells well. But do you sometimes feel that the bestsellers are junk and you have much better images that doesn't sell that well in your portfolio?

Or are you lucky and the images you think are your best also sells?

16
Has anyone got a good explanation why some sites have daily or weekly upload limits instead of monthly limits?

For example my weekly upload limit at iStock is 38/week. If I do a long and successful photoshoot and get around 50 good images, why can't I upload the right away?
Why can't there be a monthly limit like 160/month? I would even settle with less, let's say 130 per month.

Weekly limits sucks, and daily limits suck even more. I really hate sorting my images in different folders to be submitted to different agencies instead of just uploading a bunch of stuff now and then.

Veer / Average subscription earnings on Veer?
« on: February 18, 2012, 05:14 »
I'm trying to find out how the average stubscription prices turned out, but I have too little data (only four sales so far!)

My sales: 0.29 + 0.42 + 0.25 + 0.83

Average = 0.45

What's yours?

General Stock Discussion / Stupidest Quirks?
« on: January 28, 2012, 08:46 »
I was just uploading some pics to Depositphotos. When I was trying to submit an image, I got a red text saying "Please correct errors below: Title - (min length 6 chars)"

What the... My title was 5 characters. I can't understand why there has to be a limit like this, it just doesn't make any sense...?

What other strange "quirks" does other sites have that you would like to get rid of?

General Stock Discussion / November, so far?
« on: November 09, 2011, 07:32 »
Am I the only one with an absolutely horrible start of the month? Everything is weak. Especially iStock and Fotolia are down. The month has started so badly that it's almost ridiculous. Except I'm not laughing.

edit: DT seems to be "okay".

General Stock Discussion / Computer cursors and copyright?
« on: October 26, 2011, 14:17 »
Does anyone know, are the computer cursors copyrighted? Like the arrow in Windows? Or is the design considered generic? I have seen the same cursor on lots of stock images, and now I'm planning to do a very different thing with the cursor.

Do I have to design my own cursor I.E. just move some pixels or can I use the "official" cursor (I would prefer the latter one, but not sure if it's legal...)

General Stock Discussion / Big 2
« on: August 29, 2011, 02:22 »
To me, it starts to look like we have a Big 2. My Fotolia earnings are only a 1/6 of what I get from Shutterstock (They were almost even sometime in history!)

Here is my current situation:

Big 2:
Shutterstock
iStock

Middle Tier:
Fotolia
Dreamstime
Veer
123rf

Low Earners:
The rest

So, do YOU still feel we have a "Big 4" ?

General Stock Discussion / Stocking is the new Planking

This is just a small warning to you all: Study and research what you are going to shoot, just to make sure everything is done properly. This will make your images more saleable!

Here is an example:

I have played clarinet (a musical instrument) for a long time ago. Some time ago I searched for clarinet images to find gaps in collections that I was planning to fill. I got surprised how many crappy shots there were, images where the instrument and/or the action looked totally silly (unintentionally). Here are some examples (from 323 results at Getty's):

Hands (left/right) are the wrong way:
http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/104821717/OJO-Images
http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/108313623/Vetta
http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/84049748/Photographers-Choice
http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/78722497/Fuse

What are they doing? :D
http://www.gettyimages.fi/detail/96389322/Cultura
http://www.gettyimages.fi/detail/88798525/UpperCut-Images

You can't play clarinet wearing gloves:
http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/LS000837/Photodisc
http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/71078879/Stockbyte

I have no idea how they have managed to assemble the instrument so wrong
http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/99276468/Tetra-images
http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/57443016/Stockbyte

This is a mirror image:
http://www.gettyimages.com/detail/87854228/Dorling-Kindersley

The moral of the story: Spend some time researching your subject and/or get someone that is a specialist on the subject to be a "technical advisor". Otherwise the images may look silly to the trained eye.

Do you have more examples on other subjects?

Remember the day when IS had the pickiest reviewers? My current observation is they seem to accept almost anything i submit. They are propably desperate for new material (?)

In the other hand, SS, DT, FT are getting more and more difficult to submit to. I used to have a 90%+ acceptance ratio, but now its more like 50% (I haven't got the courage to check out my numbers...)

This is how the tables turn...

(Bottom line: the sites should accept almost anything that is technically good enough. Let the customers vote with their clicks and buys and weed out the non-selling crap after it has been online for a couple of years. It's getting really frustrating to submit decent images and get them rejected because they are "too similar" oor "limited commercial value" or something else)
