iStockPhoto.com / How has your May started out at IS?
« on: May 05, 2011, 22:57 »
I just looked at my IS stats, made some maths and thought: "This month seems even worse than the horrible April!". How does your May stats at IS look like compared to April?

iStockPhoto.com / More partner earnings in november?
« on: January 04, 2011, 07:13 »
In the last couple of days I had a sudden about $40 rise in my account balance without finding any extended licences or anything. Then I looked at my november earnings and noticed that I had gotten more noveber partner earnings. I had about $90 before, and now I have about $130.

Did anyone else have a similiar bump in november earnings or am I the only one?

iStockPhoto.com / G.I. Sales?
« on: December 27, 2010, 10:51 »
I just looked at my contributor stats and noticed something that I can't recall seeing before:

File Purchase, Extended Licences, Prints, Buy Requests, Partner Program and....wait... G.I. Sales ?

What are those purple-colored G.I. Sales and how can I get some?

Some admin in the iStock forums claimed that iStock makes 50% of it's revenue in four last months of the year (sept-dec). Do you see the same pattern in your sales or is this just an illusion caused by iStock's growth? (or are they lying)

I need an answer quickly. This is the first time I'm using the combination Stabilizer lens + Monopod, and I don't have time to run tests.

I know that I should set the stabilizer switch off on my 100/2.8L when shooting on a tripod. But what should I do when using a monopod? I will be mostly shooting between 1/30 and 1/125 seconds. Is it better to have the stabilizer on to get rid of some sideways movement when using monopod or does it cause more blur?

CanStockPhoto.com / How to search your own portfolio?

Is there a way to perform a search in your own portfolio at Canstockphoto?

General Stock Discussion / Next site to go under?
« on: September 29, 2010, 13:54 »
LuckyOliver, Snapvillage, Polylooks etc. etc. What will be the next site that will go under? (Let's limit the options to the sites in the right side of the page -> )

Which is the site you wouldn't put your bets on?

iStockPhoto.com / iStockphoto.com 2000-2011 R.I.P.
« on: September 10, 2010, 14:39 »
Just wanted to read and feel how it would sound. What text would you put on their gravestone?

(Sorry about this thread, I'm getting a bit drunk here :))

Alamy.com / Alamy gives to charity
« on: August 26, 2010, 13:26 »
This fact amazed me... : According to their web page, Alamy gives over 89% of its profits to medical research!
http://www.alamy.com/medical-research.asp

Essentially it's the photographers' money that is given away, but I still don't feel too angry about this :)

Shutterstock.com / July payment?
« on: July 09, 2010, 07:50 »
Has anyone got their paypal July payment yet?

For a few days ago Shutterstock reduced my account balance to contain only this months balance, but I haven't got any email (or money) from them. They usually pay me the on the 6th of each month and they touch the balance only just some moments before the payment, so this feels a bit strange, especially when they had some glitch with the balances in the end of last month...

Alamy.com / Alamy Forum
« on: March 16, 2010, 05:03 »
When I'm trying to access Alamy's Contributor forum I get:
"Your account has been temporarily suspended. This suspension is due to end on June 2th 2018 9:47:07."

I'm I banned or is it a glitch?

General Stock Discussion / Model Release Newbie
« on: December 20, 2009, 15:41 »
I have been shooting stock for some years, but all my microstock stuff has been non-released (images of objects and such). Now I'm interested in shooting some images with recognizable persons. Which release(s) should I have the model to sign? Is there an universal release that would be OK for my top4 (IS, SS, DT, FT) or should I have the model sign four different releases?

123RF / How do I get paid (at 123rf.com)
« on: December 04, 2009, 08:24 »
I decided to get my first ever payment from 123rf.com. But I can't find anywhere how to request a payment. FAQ says: "No request is necessary. if you are eligible, we will pay you according to the payment method you have selected in your profile."

I have nothing payment related on my "profile" page. Or "account" page. Or "earnings" page. Or any other place either...

Shutterstock.com / Rejected images experiment
« on: November 24, 2009, 16:47 »
I tried to upload 20 images that were earlier rejected by SS. I did this because these images have sold elsewhere and the rejection reasons were a matter of taste: "composition", "lighting" etc.

What happened? Every image got accepted. Every single of them. This is how consistent their reviewing process is...

I just got 20 new images at SS without any shooting/processing.

I'll keep you updated if I sell any of these images :)

General Stock Discussion / Low earners with easy uploading?
« on: November 01, 2009, 13:27 »
Does some of the following sites have EASY uploading? That means NO categories, NO clicks on separate images needed, FTP upload (or very easy web form without having to select files separately or submission by DVD)
I know 123rf, canstock, scanstockphoto are that easy, but are there others? (veer and stockxpert are quite easy too...)

Pixmac
MicrostockPhoto
Fotomind
Photosociety

How easy are the above sites to upload?

Thinking about more places where to dump my portfolio... :)

rant...rant....rant...

Now I'm getting really annoyed with Dreamstime. I had just a small batch rejected most likely because I had earlier been uploading images of the same subjects. Of one subject I had uploaded one image and got it approved. Now I was going to upload  two more and the both were rejected with a "Too many photos/illustrations on the same subject or from the same series. " message.

And believe me, all the three shots were different and included both vertical and horizontal versions, and the both horizontal ones had a very different composition and different copy space.

Second subject was an object containing text, I had a horizontal version and two vertical versions shot from different directions (left/right). I only got only vertical accepted. Don't they know that an image with text cannot be flipped during the layout?

I wish the reviewers had even some clue about graphic design / layout work...

Of my Big5 Fotolia and Dreamstime seem to piss me off with their stupid rejection reasons. iStock seems to be very consistent, SS comes as a good second. Can't say too much about SX because they accept almost everything.

I'm bored with the new "clone" sites that are popping up every month, If I had to start another microstock agency, here is what I would do:

1 ) The site would have ONLY EXCLUSIVE IMAGES (not exclusive photographers, only images), so that it would be the only place to buy these images. That would drive some customers to the site, just to "quickly see what they have"
I think many of customers sticks with their chosen site because the other sites have mostly the same images. The site would have to be marketed as a "fresh alternative".

2 ) The agreement would prevent photographers to submit too similiar images (from the same shoot) to other agencies.

3 ) The photographers could pull out their images whenever they want.

4 ) Quite heavy editing regarding content, moderately easy on the technical side (noise etc.). The collection could be fairly small, no need to break any records here, because the images are unique.

5 ) Easy licenses, maybe only few sizes like (small web, medium print and max size) and one extended licence. Maybe two ranges of pricing, one "traditional" microstock and one "premium" microstock/midstock. The prices would be chosen by the image editors with a purpose of maximum revenue.

6 ) Search should have some very clever algorithm that analyzes all clicks and customer behavior like Alamy's search. Images with bad keywords and few clicks/purchases would sink to the bottom.

7 ) Easy uploading without categories or extra clicks.

8 ) A fair comission to the photographer. Maybe in the area of 40%. More than that doesn't seem to leave enough for marketing and maintaining the site.

One interesting different agency is photocase http://www.photocase.com/ but it has drawbacks:
-The images aren't exclusive
-The collection is too tightly edited, and it doesn't contain "normal" images
-search/keywords is a mess
-free downloads/sharing etc. sounds more like iStock year 2003, not serious business.

Are my ideas stupid?

I noticed that Crestock has a new layout. There sure is one thing I don't like about it. I can't find my royalties anywhere. I mean the current amount of money, not the total earnings or earnings for this year.

iStockPhoto.com / $0.15 Sale - a new low?
« on: April 18, 2009, 05:29 »
I just got a $0.15 XSmall sale. I didn't know sales could be this low, is this old credits or what?

Bigstock.com / 7 words in description
« on: February 03, 2009, 09:29 »
I just have to tell here how I hate the 7 words minimum in description. Many of my files have only a few words in description, and bigstockphoto makes me write new ones.

Let's say the original description was "Apple". Who does it benefit that I write "Red ripe nice and shiny apple fruit". That sounds almost like gibberish, but hey - it's seven words!

I wish they would just dump the minimum length in description, it just doesn't make sense...

Alamy.com / Changes at Alamy
« on: September 24, 2008, 08:43 »
(I edited this to sound more pessimistic than before...):

To summarize:
- Alamy's percentage for direct sales and for distributor sales will
rise by 5%
- An end to bank transfer fees
- No more cheque fees
- No charges on foreign exchange fees for payments

Featurepics.com / "not downloaded yet"
« on: August 27, 2008, 06:02 »
What is this? I just checked my earnings and the total number of $ had gone down. When I looked at the earnings page some of the images had a red text saying "not downloaded yet" and they were withdrawn from the total sum.

Some of the images were sold already in 2007 and now they are taken away from me?
