General Stock Discussion / Re: Offensive Photos
« on: September 15, 2012, 03:01 »
It would never cross my mind (as well as mind of absolute majority of Europeans - I hope) that studio photograph of someone pretending suicide could be considered by anybody as offensive.

I haven't seen the photo (Is it worse than these http://depositphotos.com/search/suicide.html#st=0 ), but if it is a clearly staged studio photo I cannot understand why someone would consider this offensive... It might be an example of bad taste or low commercial value, but not "offensive". And yes, I'm from Europe :)

And you cannot protect your 10 year old daughter forever, I'm sure she'll soon start to understand that people do take their own lives in this cruel world.

but that happened to be what the publishers of the dying Princess Diana pictures also said.

How can you even compare a staged studio shot to a real persone dying?

Switch to Mac. I just search the keywords and add "jpg" to find just images. The results are practically instant.

Off Topic / Re: iPhone 5... Is it worth buying??
« on: September 13, 2012, 07:07 »
I think people had unrealistic expectations for iPhone 5. They can't even say what they are missing, they just doesn't get the "wow"-factor because the product has matured. Even if the product is better than the earlier version in just about any aspect.
Every upgrade cannot give the same feeling as the first iPhone or first iPad or first iPod, it's just the way it is.

It's really interesting how people always remember to tell that Apple products are "overpriced". I have owned many Apple products (never an iPhone - yet!), and I have always thought they have been worth their cost, beautiful products that work well and have all the necessary features (for me). You get what you pay for.

And it's not "overpricing" if a product costs - let's say - 15% more than a comparable product. In a mobile phone we are talking perhaps about $100. A Small sum that is easily wasted on drinking in bars or eating out a couple of times.

Canon / Re: Canon 3D - 46MP ... maybe
« on: September 05, 2012, 17:47 »
Even my 5D mk II raw files can be in the 40MB are if there is plenty of detail in the image (like a fabric texture or similar).
I don't think the 46MP files would be much bigger, because the lens won't resolve much more detail, but maybe we'll get to the 60MB area....  ???

And yes, I would certainly buy a 3D if the autofocus is at least as good as in 5D mk III and the price tag isn't totally insane.

Shutterstock.com / US Source / Non US Source
« on: September 05, 2012, 05:17 »
I was just looking at my payment history page ( http://submit.shutterstock.com/payment_history.mhtml ) and thought if everybody has the same percentage of earnings from US Source vs. Non US Source?

My stats (I calculated from only 2 last payments, but they were big ones, 2000+ dollars each):

US Source 25%
Non US Source 75%
Located in Europe

I would be interested to hear if yo have similar figures...?

What exactly is this "fresh approach" ?

Newbie Discussion / Re: colour or black and white images
« on: August 22, 2012, 18:28 »
Is there anyone doing well just selling b&w?  I have tried a few but I think buyers can just turn my colour photos in to b&w if they want.

Most of people are not able to do a GOOD conversion to B/W, they don't understand how to filter etc.

I have a few black and white images, they do sell. I have converted the images to B/W either because
#1 it suits the subject
#2 the image has bad color (mixed light sources or bad props)

I can't understand how they can change their standards all of a sudden and afford to loose thousands of dollars that easily.

It's because they could lose tens or hundreds of thousands if the owner of the property sues them.

311
Freedom and more sales. Sales will also be more stable (it still is a rollercoaster ride!)

312
Factories like mine feed the mouths of more than 100 people and have internships and educational programs with the purpose of giving back to the community

What amount of the 100+ people are in position of creating work they are able to own their copyright to?
I would rather see 100+ individual entrepreneurs than a 100+ person corporation.

General Stock Discussion / Re: August off to terrible start
« on: August 08, 2012, 13:28 »
I had a great July, but now I seem to be down about 50% from July... We are all doomed! Did you hear me: DOOMED!!!

314
I'm all ears about a new Canon high MP FF body.

Me too... I just hope it's based on "5D" and not "1D" to keep the price reasonable (=Nikon D800-ish)

July was BME for me, but August has started very slowly. Of course it's a bit early to tell, but I sure hope things will pick up soon...

316
If they aren't downloaded at all (zero sales) and you manage to delete the images before selling them as RM it's OK. It's like they have never been for sale at all.
If they are sold even once, I wouldn't sell them as RM anymore.

I tend to do the other way around: I have had some images for sale as RM, and if they don't sell in years I delete them and put them as RF on micros.

317
this really is a thread about nothing...

getting traffic , some comments, but really... nothing  :P

Not really. I would like to know if people here are completely open about things or if they are holding back on some good things :)

318
I'm not sure that ALL that FT earns me would be worth the effort, never mind HALF  ;)

It's half the sales each, together they make as much as FT. The thing is that the sites in question has some of the easiest uploads ever, so to get the extra earnings I just need to click my mouse a couple of times.

319
I didn't ask anyone to tell us their secrets, just to tell if they have any... Or is that a secret too? :D

General Stock Discussion / Do you have (microstock) secrets?
« on: August 01, 2012, 06:44 »
I have a few. I upload to two sites "nobody" is talking about (they have been mentioned here, they aren't that exotic!) and I get decent returns (think "half of what Fotolia earns me").
I don't want to talk about them, all microstockers rushing to the sites might spoil it, I'll rather have my own money :)

I have some photo techniques I don't want to share/show to anyone, because I haven't seen any other doing them the same way as I do, I have even tried to google them but got no results. Some of them are DIY lighting mods that give interesting results and some other save time and makes life easier.

I don't showcase my portfolio here, especially my bestsellers. I don't want them to be copied to death (it's already happening....)

How about your secrets?

You don't want to hear this, but I got a BME on my "big 5" (IS, SS, DT, FT, 123RF)... and it's JULY!!!  :o  ;D
This has never happened to me, never, ever never! (I've been around since 2004)

BME at SS and 123RF. Good month at IS and DT. FT poor as usual.

322
The new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 might be good for this.  It's a small lightweight point and shoot but has a bigger sensor and improved image quality on similar sized cameras.  It also has very high quality video.

That Sony looks almost perfect for the job. It could of course be a bit cheaper... I'm too lazy to search for this: is there a possibility to use a remote release of some kind on the Sony?

323
I have an old Eos 5D, but it seems a bit heavy... what camera would you suggest to use instead of it? What counts: weight/resolution/price

I'm wondering about the new Nokia 808 phone, would it be possible for some one to develop a "aerial photography app"? You know, it could be remote controlled by another phone or via internet, and it could send the images straight to internet. It could have an interval timer, bracketing etc. The images would be of nice quality and the camera would be very light (169g). Maybe some servos could be connected to the USB of the phone to remote control pan/tilt etc. etc.
Now go work on it! :)

324
A quick Google search found a page for camera blimps - http://www.aerialproducts.com/blimps/camera-blimps.html

I got a bit excited at first... but then I started to think that they need to be deflated when transported (I don't have a heavy-duty truck!). The problem is the price of helium, it ain't cheap...

325
Borg, sorry, I cannot see the problem... you can change the paypal / bank account details to something suitable at any time.
