^ Sorry, I don't understand your outburst here. Or maybe I do (sorry for using word "you" in the beginning, I meant "everybody"). And I didn't mean combining commercial shoots with stock, I was just talking about accessing places for stock shoots.

(and yes, I do commissioned commercial shoots every week)

402
I think the secret is to either, get-in, or find places, things, where the normal photographer cant gain entry or access.

Yes. And while you are at it, shoot everything with exceptionally great light and styling. And if you shoot some activity, be sure the persons in the image does everything correctly so that no professionals will laugh at the image (see my post http://www.microstockgroup.com/general-stock-discussion/getting-things-done-correctly-research-before-the-shoot/ ) The images would be very difficult to copy by an average microstock shooter because they will fail in some aspect if they try to copy the image(s).

Newbie Discussion / Re: Home made photo isolation table
« on: May 08, 2012, 06:42 »

Do simple isolated objects still sell? Or even get accepted? Seems like this sort of stuff would very likely get a "too many on site" type of rejection.

I'm not shooting isolated shots of common objects any more. The sites are already full of them. It's really difficult to generate decent sales with such generic isolations. It makes no sense to dilute the sales more. So stop shooting those red apples on white! :)

BUT, if you have some niche objects or shoot "still lifes" you can get some success. Or if you are certain you can shoot a CLEARLY BETTER image than those that are already on sale.

Let's not forget that you can put Windoews on Mac, but not (really) the other way around.

I can't see the point in this. You will always get light from beneath that will look terrible. You can se it in the "pottery pig" image.

You would be much better off by placing the reflector BEHIND the glass 3ft/1m or so and lighting it separately. (This illustrates my point: http://vid35.wordpress.com/2011/05/27/product-photography-behind-the-scenes/ )

I like the objects to have a natural shadow, that calls for a different approach and some post-production work, there doesn't seem to be an easy way of doing this, just work, work, work...

Apple. Easier and less frustrating.

I think it's problematic to compare "pay-per-download" and subscription sites.
I'm almost sure that subcription customers use only a fraction of the images downloaded. My rough estimate is that half of the images are never really used (I could be totally wrong!). I don't think images that are downloaded but never used should be compared to images that are most likely to be used (bought from a pay-per-download site)

Where can I find monthly PP earnings? I see the earnings being added up to the daily earnings, but how can I easily see my PP earnings for - let's say - february 2012?

Stats and choose month and get back to Feb

Yes... but I only get the total amount (both regular and PP). I see the blue parts that are regular sales and I see the green parts that are PP, but I can't find out my total PP earnings for the month (without calculating day-by-day)

edit: OOPS!!! I need to change the drop-down menu from daily -> monthly :)

Veer / Re: Average subscription earnings on Veer?
« on: April 21, 2012, 06:10 »
Since I started this thread, I have had some more subscription downloads. Here are my current numbers:
0.99 + 0.62 + 1.65 + 2.48 + 0.25 + 0.42 + 0.28 + 4.95 + 0.25 + 0.28 + 0.25

Average $ 1.13 per download, nice!

Now I just wish MORE sales!

I have been a Canon shooter since 2005, but this is the first time I really wish I had a Nikon. Of course I'm not going to change sides now, I have too much invested in Canon gear, I just wish Canon would come up with a serious challenger to D800. This must be how Nikon shooters felt when 5D came out back in 2005.

One thing is for certain: Canon needs to drop the 5D III price with $1000.

New Sites - General / Re: Picture Nation

I looked at some portfolios over there. It didn't take too long to find portfolios with 5 images.

They are bad, bad, bad, bad people over there that should be ashamed of themselves. They are practically stealing people's images and blackmailing for money.

This seems like a scam, attracting conributors to upload 5 images and then make the profit out of the images (they won't never earn enough to get paid nor can they delete the images - they are locked for months).

This really pisses me off.

After uploading 5 images, they want 10 pounds of money... that's very strange.

after the approval?

A quote from their page: "To have more than 5 images live you need to upgrade to a PN Pro account. This enables you to upload as many images as you like to our inspection team, have your images checked for copyrights, tags and keywords, and marketed to buyers."

Do they know there are sites that have PAID contributors for uploading? (Zoonar, Depositphotos, Veer...)

Off Topic / Re: Your fav OSTs
« on: April 06, 2012, 03:14 »
I love movies but I'm not a big fan of listening to soundtracks "separately". I think movie music works best when listened watching the movie. Many of the best movie music isn't good "listening music".

My favorite movie composers are perhaps Bernard Herrmann and Jerry Goldsmith, but their music doesn't work as good without the image.

If I had to listen to soundtracks, I'd propably listen to John Williams or Chaplin.

Hans Zipper feels often too over-the-rop, he just seems to "max out" at every point possible instead of playing with subtleties :)

General Photography Discussion / Re: Lifetime of a Camera?
« on: April 05, 2012, 17:01 »
In the past I had a 5D that must have had a really, really big shuttercount because I used it for years, daily.
Then luckily 5D mkII came along and I upgraded my camera. After a couple of years I started to think about the shuttercount again, and I bought another 5D mkII and started to have the old 5D mkII as a backup body. After that - Peace of mind! I almost always carry two 5D mkII bodies, it calms my mind to know that if one of them breaks, I still have the other one and my photoshoot will be saved just by changing the body!

420
I voted for $50 - $80. I wan't to be a bit pessimistic in my estimate, that way I won't get dissappointed :)
My images have already earned over $40 per image, And I expect them to earn more.
But it's very difficult to predict the "shelf life" of images. I have images from 2004 that sells (not often, but it happens!).

edit: I just noticed this thread is very old!

421
In all my cameras, even medium format, I have installed the Split-screen, nowdays adjusted to digitals, its rather expensive but, dead-accurate! and for all types of shooting, even Macro photography.

Yes, a split screen helps a bit. The problem is that it's in the center, and when shooting large apertures the focus plane isn't straight. i.e. if I focus in the center and then re-compose the image, the focus may be off.
(When I'm talking about large apertures I'm talking about apertures in the f/2 region:) )

422
Always manual focus, in the studio. in fact I almost always use M/F, indoors or outdoors. Pretty hard, justifying a poor AF result to a client.

You must be good at MF, I get much more good results with AF than with MF, my MF shots are almost always a little off, especially when I shoot with large apertures.

423
I Switch between those two. I can usually get more accurate focus with AF, but sometimes I don't have a correctly placed AF point (happens a lot with 5D mk II) and I need to focus manually.
When I get a 5D mk III I propably use AF even more.

Generally speaking:

AF: Moving subjects / hand-held camera
MF: Non-moving subjects / camera on tripod

Yes, you can use it :)
