Thanks Aetherial, but doesn't work!

it was working, but it doesn't anymore apparently. they have upgraded the whole software several days ago and this is a new feature. I looked in my gallery and my images with compound keywords are broken down in individual words... sorry for misinforming, in my defense, I am certain that it was working before.

separate single keywords with commas and when your keywords contain several words contain the whole keyword within one set of commas, for example:

attractive, female, studio shot, from above, model, isolated...

iStockPhoto.com / Re: IS Changes best match Algorithm Again!
« on: October 23, 2008, 02:32 »
IS is very erratic. search placement is everything. buyers seem never to venture deeper into the results. page one image might get 1000 dls, page ten seems forgotten. I keep checking from time to time. if it doesn't fly off in the beginning, it never does. IS is my fourth seller behind SS, StockXpert, FT closely followed by DT.
I gave up filling portfolio. I will drop one by one in it like fishes in the pond until one of them gets noticed and picked up by search engine.

This thread is becoming 'over the top' comical.

comical in the sense that istock rejections are over the top comical
or
comical in the sense what are your non-exclusives complaining about?

If I'm not mistaken, reviews were super quick for few days at the beginning of October and have since returned to usual 2 day period.

do you see sales where from that surplus came in your "balance" sheet for today and yesterday or is it completely unjustified?

for instance, i didn't have any payments (new member) so my total is ok, but I also had two XL sales today for which all details are available.

57
I think that Fotolia has the most fair system and thus best in terms of exposure for all contributors. it's relevancy search is now an amalgam of new images that are yet to be sold and old solid sellers.

58
Getting a Canon EOS 5D will probably allow you to receive higher royalties (since it will probably allow larger size downloads), but images from this camera will also sometimes get a higher rejection rate (because some reviewers think that they see graininess in the image at large resolutions).

LMAO.... :))))))) You're funny dude. Getting a 5d, huh?

Alight people, I will try an experiment with removing all the EXIF before uploading and see how it goes. Or maybe even better, changing the info, making the camera type the EOS 5d mentioned above..?

I had a greater number of pictures rejected on istock with Canon 5D (i rented it) than with Nikon D80 and I had way more pictures made with D80. So...your photo gotta be good and clean and well isolated, obviously. 5d reveals more details which can make things more complex to isolate.

« on: September 30, 2008, 06:40 »
I'm getting D90 this afternoon. no money for switching to Canon. What do you think: will D90 footage be acceptable for StockXpert and IS? Shutterstock said they will accept it.
I'm more concerned about video compression rate than rolling shutter or crappy sound. I don't know if it's sufficent for stock footage, but I fear it's on the lo-fi side...

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Are you going to buy Canon EOS 5Dmk2?
« on: September 19, 2008, 04:31 »
I'm thinking of buying it, butwill have to sell all my Nikon gear first and borrow some extra money. I think it is worth it. 21mpix? full 1080p HD video? d90 was very interesting to me, but rolling shutter, and  (now) ONLY 12mpix doesn't look so hot, anymore.

they don't. but they also don't know who should get better treatment. check newest exclusive uploads. some percentage of pictures there are...well, just crappy, while many non-exclusives have fantastic images and only get to upload 15 a week, and their images get punked in the best match search in favor of excl.

StockXpert.com / Re: StockXpert Dead?
« on: September 16, 2008, 02:03 »
my sales are dead also. only $1.10 this month. I am a new there, but if in three months I made 27$ and this month brought me only a buck, and now my portfolio is biggest compared to past months, then there is definitely something wrong.

I wrote in a thread there about a search engine cheat using Opera speed dial (I think that  plenty of users are exploiting that) - open nine windows in it and set them to refresh automaticly every X seconds (you're logged out offcourse) and thus generate extremely unfair number of views and occupy first N pages of search engine.  I've never done it, because it seems inherently illegal although not formaly so, but I've heard about it and seen same contributors with same pictures using every frigging keyword for searching and those people didn't pimp one of their images, they pimped whole batches. Appearance of this matches the time when me and others started seeing significant decline in views and sales and it must be true because my images that were pimped though this and another forum in a fair way that we do here (comment and view other people images before somebody does it to yours) and got more than 200 views in a course of few days never got to the first page of search engine. Those images that I think are unfairly pumped get to the first position on the day they were approved. Nobody is going to buy your picture if it's burried on the 10th, not to mention 110th page of results. StockXpert didn't come out with an announcement of a policy to approve nor condemn this kind of behavior. There has been a mention in a thread, but not a public statement in a "don't do it anymore, we'll slap you if you try this again!" kinda way. They should either remove views from search algorithm/find way to count only buyer views (probably impossible), or forbid this kind of behavior.

Maybe we should convey a joint experiment, pimp some images in that way to prove the point while leaving neccessary information about it's progress here to separate us from others who do it. If our sales do improve, then we should ask StockXpert to do something about it. what do you think?

nobody?

Today I tried again the same thing at around 6:30 am GMT. I got lots of results for newer images, and now (around 8:30 GMT) I again get only older images with lots of downloads. both sorted by relevance.

Is there a possibility that Fotolia has a, let's call it, "diurnal" search engine? favoring good sellers for a half of day, and then favoring new images for other half? Unfortunately, it seems that my images are on front pages during the night, when there is a chance only for someone i Asia to see it during his/her workhours. it never occured to me before, but that might actually be a good and fair sytem to have several best match algorhytm changing in equal time slots each day.

or I am doing something wrong and got this all wrong?

PLEASE, try searching for your images (same keywords, new images) several times a day (with at least 12 hours between search would be best) to see if this might be true.

« on: September 16, 2008, 01:37 »
ok, thanks, but let me rephrase:

I am member of US zone Fotolia (although I live in Europe) and most of my customers (well there has been 16 of them total, I'm new) are European. Am I equally visible to european customers in english language european Fotolia and US customers in english language US Fotolia?

do our images get the same search engine placement and visibility for all the different "versions" of fotolia (US,UK,eu...)?

I didn't quite understand, could you clarify a buit:

for instance if I sell a XL photo in US fotolia and another in EU fotolia how much exactly of each currency (how many $ and how many EUR) would I get from each sale?

General Stock Discussion / Re: Legality considerations

Do you think all these companies pay a lot of money to trademark, patent and copyright their products, logos etc just for fun?

they do it so competitors couldn't make a product that is similar in function and appearance to their own and get a free ride on somebody else's marketing. I suppose you're from US and have never seen cheap chinese Reabac or Reebac shoes, Pioneir stereo, Panasoanic telephones or Smatch watches...
Most of the companies would sell their *sses to get free marketing of any sorts.

Adobe Stock / "Relevance" search engine change caught red handed?
« on: September 15, 2008, 05:27 »
Today I was trying to find several of my very new images on FT with shopping as a theme. almost all of them contained "shopping" as a first keyword. It was early morning here (around 6 am GMT) and I was very surprised to find several of them spread over first, second and third page of search results. I double and triplechecked by repeating search. It was sorted by relevance. I thought, "Good, when the buyers get to work I will hit s**tloads of dls" (about time!) because those images are very good in my honest opinion, so naturally I tried this again four hours later and the results are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. not that my images are nowhere to be seen near first 7 pages (I quit looking after that), but  only images that retained their position in my previous and this search are Yuri's shopping girls (well deserved because those images are fantastic, I even saw them on bank posters in my country).

Did I catch search engine change?? Regular monday morning search engine change (*, couldn't they wait another day, those images were accepted over the weekend?!)?? Did you notice something like that too? Will I ever make daily dls at FT???(ok, don't answer this one)

in my very very humble experience, every new batch gets few downloads from old photos as well.

« on: September 12, 2008, 05:46 »
I have great sales (for a beginner of 3 months now with only ~70 photos online) on SS, and lousy on every other site (IS being second worst by a dollar), so comparisons aren't always viable. In my case, what I consider a great shot and it sells on FT,DT and StockXpert, it doesn't have a single dl on IS. it will take me 5 more months to reach payout on other sites, and I'm only on SS for a month and a week and will get a payout at the end of this September. So it is definitely worth it, but it requires you to upload constantly through out the week. On the day my batch get accepted (unless it is weekend) I get 15 dls, next day 5, next day 3, and so on until I get another batch approved. On other sites it's loong days without dls.
I got in on the first try, but it was 10 photos of beautiful girls isolated on white in the studio. I recommend hiring a model or two and getting them to go through some concept shots and submit that to SS. You should pass with flying colors. Afterwards, fill your portfolio with your usual stuff.

if best match looks for ratio between views and downloads (somebody mentioned that it does) than excessive views with no downloads are very bad
