General Stock Discussion / Re: site from the buyer's perspective
« on: September 22, 2006, 10:35 »
Oh, if you really want to help photographers, then use Stockxpert. At StockXpert I get 2,5USD for the same (8MP) pics I get 0,25 at SS, 1USD at IS and 1USD at DT.
DT is tad cheaper, but a sale StockXpert is worth two at any of the other sites.

Apart form that, Istock has the best collection and DT surprised me with so many free pictures, so that's worth signing up for anyway.

Just to elaborate:
4 of 5 of my best sellers at Istock has been rejected at DT. They may reject all they want, but things like that doesn't add weight to their decisions.

If I worried about cost effectiveness, I'd be long gone. But in my case, I do a lot of the boring stuff at work, so I would be sitting there anyway.

Ah, right! Thought you were manually uploading!

No, after waiting for all of them uploaded, then the error message comes, nothing goes through, tried many different titles, keywords, still not working, only way u can do is upload one by one, which I rather not to, I guess I will have to wait for a while on this.
You don't understand. First you upload, and when the image shows, then the image is uploaded and you can upload another one - without adding keywords etc. You can do that later. This way, you're assigned an earlier number in the queue too.

So maybe best to check out the competition at DT before uploading
Don't bother.
If pics have been accepted at other sites, just upload and see what happens. Never try to understand how reviewers think.

because there is no way that a computer can know what you meant by "orange" (fruit, color, or both), or "doc" (document or doctor),

Meanwhile, I take advantage of the extra keywords.  ;D

Well, you can still upload, just wait to finish them.

The official update thread from IS.

http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_messages.php?threadid=39923&page=1

Some reassurances, and updates on what's going on behind the scenes. It will take a while for things to sort out, but at least IS says we don't have to go to edit the tags for all our images.

Still waiting for the dust to settle.

cheers.

Well, if I don't have to edit all my 600 images, that's good. It's pain stakingly slow too.

Better fix those keywords fast.

I always keep an eye on my top seller, how it rank in "metal texture" sorted by most downloaded. Yesterday, it was at 35th place with 241 downloads. Today, (after I fixed the keywords - not sure if it affected anything) it's at 27th, still with 241 downloads. Additionally, there's lots of new pics below.

Oh crap, it will take a long time to adapt the old keywords to the new keywording system at iStock.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Why the difference?
« on: September 18, 2006, 01:36 »
Never had any trouble at IS. The only thing which annoys me is the cheerleading. iStock is where I make the most money, so I'm happy with it, but some people are, like was mentioned earlier, happy either it's upload restrictions or full stop. It's all jolly good.

39
could you go through that a little slower?

All right, I finally got around to it and even made a tutorial:  ;)

I'm quite satisfied personally. And when I get rejections, it's usually reflected somehow at iStock and Shutterstock.

Site Related / Inbox wiping danger
« on: September 12, 2006, 06:29 »
I think the order her should be changed:

Delete all messages in your Inbox
Outbox
New Message
Check for new messages

I almost deleted all my messages (well only one actually) because I instinctly aimed for the top link. If there were no confirmation, the inbox would have been clean by now.

« on: September 11, 2006, 16:51 »
I had one image shoot up to 98 downloads, then they changed the ranking or someone uploaded a better image, and my super seller was no more :(
Try to push it within your portfolio. For instance, by posting its thumb below similar pics, like I've done.

Yeah ... it never ceases to astonish me what sells. That's one of the beauties of this line of work. One day, just on a whim, I took a quick shot of the wood grain on one of the doors in my house.

Indeed. Take a look at my only iStock flame, with 235 sales:
http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/business/business_concepts/industrial/689512_metal_plate.php?id=689512

I probably used 5 seconds to take the picture, and maybe a minute in preparing it. ;)

... And would it be possible to see your portfolio and which pics you sold?

I'm assuming that's addressed to me (forgive me if it's not ;D ).

You can see my portfolio at Alamy under my name 'Alistair Scott', and the 4 images I have sold with them are numbered: AW4G74, A0W2G7, A0W2G8 and AWWRC0. Do a search on those reference numbers - I don't know of any other way to refer to them on Alamy.

As for upsizing, like Leaf, I've written an action for Photoshop, doing it in 10% increments (as I believe that this gives a better result), and it's more or less automatic.

Cheers

Thanks, that's interesting to see!
I agree with Leaf, and I think that the reason why esp. the spider and the Clifton bridge sells is that they're very specific. At iStockthere's not a single image of a spider in the bathtub. Hmm, someone could make a lot of money by placing a Tarantula in the tub and take the picture! If they could survive! :D

Hm, might try this myself then. Just need to get the resiziing action right. (I have heard of the 10% method earlier.)

I see you have to upsample pics and so on. Is it a lot of work technically?

And would it be possible to see your portfolio and which pics you sold?

Anyone ever had any use for the Creative Network? Does it affect anything at all (unless they're friends from before)?

That's cool! :)

Btw, the Free Image at DT is great for downloaders, and I'm one of them and keep checking the free images.

I also donated this one:

General Stock Discussion / Re: Who's primary income is from stock?
« on: September 08, 2006, 17:38 »
I'm no where near, but I'm not interested in making it a full time job either. That would mean that I would have to do quite different things than rusty stuff, so I prefer to keep it as a hobby and take the pictures I like.

General Stock Discussion / Re: September: Boom or Bust?

So how is September doing for everybody after the 1st week?
Currently, at iStock it seems as it's my best month or as good as the previous best months (which were May and June). Hope that trend continues!
