Shutterstock.com / Re: SS - Single shot stats
« on: November 25, 2010, 05:02 »
'The latest downloads' map gives me an idea which images are popular, but I would appreciate your suggestion as to where I can find the detailed stats. Thank you.

SS does not provide stats for other people's images, only for your own.

Leads me to wondering how much else they change on the site on a regular basis without anyone noticing... Maybe this was a test of the communities observation skills?  ???

I guess it was a test, but they tested the impact of a price increase on buyer behavior.

True, but you can still download free stuff, right?! :)

Yes, of course. But it would be more fun if we could participate in the sweepstake as well.  :)

General Stock Discussion / Re: New microstock agency.
« on: October 26, 2010, 07:49 »
We already need a lot of trust, that all these agencies deal properly with the accounting and management of our images, and don't occasionally 'forget' to pay our commissions.

No need to deal with a company that can't even get a simple website set up properly and according to legal requirements. Why should I assume that they will do the much more complicated issues of accounting properly?

Highly dubious. Nobody in his/her sane mind would submit to such a site.

Billions of creative minds...? So you expect the whole of mankind to become contributors? Well, at least you are thinking big!  :P

how does stuff like this make it through the queue?
http://www.istockphoto.com/stock-photo-14262833-businessman-sleeping-on-sofa.php

Whoops, that's just a little keyword/description glitch that occurred when the image was added to the database.

Should be titled, "Agency Collection contributor waiting for earnings to pile up"

LOL

Some images from this particular contributor have already been bought:

Maui. Here is the AI file - www.megaupload.com/?d=ZLHA780P

Cthoman - They are elliptical indeed. I just don't understand why round ones work and oval ones don't. Is it an Illustrator bug?

Yes, the problem is the elliptical gradient. No way around it, afaik.

Your eps file shows only the bitmap image, so I can't see the original radial gradient. Could you upload the .ai file?

I found that you can specify some parameters with radial gradients which do not work with eps files well. I had one case where the gradient was NOT converted to a bitmap, but when I reloaded the eps file the gradient had changed its shape.

Hm, I understand it the other way around: Fotolia will sell stock images to DeviantArt members. Or not?

Ok, so you got rejected, and somebody else got approved with a similar image. And what are we supposed to do about it?

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Buyers Bailing on Istock
« on: September 24, 2010, 14:48 »
my sales have been very good this week. I've had two days that were stellar in fact. I think it is far too early to start suggesting sales are plummeting because of an issue being primarily covered in forums, which most buyers don't really visit.

The last few days were stellar for me, too. 2 to 3 times more downloads than usual.

(Oh, wait, that was on Shutterstock. Sorry...)

Well, I applied for an ITIN anyhow, because I need it for other purposes as well. But it is a nuisance.

I just got the exact same e-mail from Erin adressed to Brad Calkins also, probably a mistake....

Yes, me too... I guess they are now flooded with mails from all non-Brad Calkins'es  ;D

it is a pity really that the new submit interface doesn't come for so long. Even my tiny portfolio of 105 pictures does generate regular sales (a few per month) - so I feel it would make sense to upload my other ~1400 photos... but I don't have enough patience to do it with the current interface.

Similar for me and my illustrations. They could be a good addition for their site (the don't have anything similar), but I just can't be bothered with their upload system.

However, there is the Bridgeman Art Library vs. Corel Corporation case:

In other words, an exact reproduction of an image in the public domain does not possess creativity itself.  Therefore, the reproduction is not protected under copyright law.

Edit:
Here is a Wikipedia article about the case:

I have some good success with raster illustrations on Alamy.

I'm guessing you don't have your micro-images for sale at Alamy then ?

I was once adviced to upload other images if I wanted to start contributing to Alamy. What is the general opinion on this?

I have other images on Alamy, yes. Images that I consider better quality and illustrations that took too long to make and that are too special for selling them on micro.

Simple create a "RM" site that allows previous licensing as RF.  Exclusives would be able to move content there to send IS a message without burning their bridge.

Brilliant idea.

I just re-read the exclusive agreement. This could work extremely well. We could develop a new simple Micro RM license that allowed a single image use - the buyer is automatically tracked against the image in question for each "use" so as to make the arrangement within the excusion in the IS exclusive agreement.

It seems to me that this would be a very good idea - not only for IS exclusives, but generally.

The reason why I still have not opened an account with canstock. Once they change their commissions I'd certainly give them a try...

I am quite happy with them: Maybe it will help your decision if I tell you that my average commission over all sales I had so far is $5.16 - mainly due to those highly priced Fotosearch sales. But I don't get many 0.25 sales, too. Many $2.00 - $2.50 sales.
