Simon Raybould has been appointed Director - Sales & Marketing, North America for Pixmac. Formerly with the V.C.G Group and later Getty Images in London, and then until recently with Corbis and Veer in Canada, Simon now has his eyes firmly on the microstock market in the USA and Canada.

Is he one of those responsible for the disastrous start of the Veer Marketplace?

Many NASA images (moving and still) in the public domain can be used for merchandising purposes.

Public domain is public domain. Just make sure that you only use images that are designated as public domain.

I guess they somehow wanted to mention the individual authors, but the text on the main site is clear enough. I don't see how you can a mistake by using it.

But if you want additional clarification go ahead.

From the Blue Marble website:

So this is the only text they require.

Dreamstime.com / Re: Stock "factories" slowing uploads?
« on: July 17, 2010, 06:31 »
I guess it depends on the type of map you are submitting. If they are photos of maps from a Rand McNally or similar type of map book, they ALL should have been rejected because that material is copyrighted. If the map is an out-of-focus part of your photo and some other object is the main focus, then you would be right and it would be moronic.

They are complex illustrations, made by myself. No photos.

I have said it before: If I a map of Kentucky is rejected just because I also have maps of 20 other US states in my portfolio, it is not only stupid, it is downright moronic, and I don't have any patience for such unprofessional nonsense.

I don't upload vectors anymore at FT because of this pricing nonsense. Just jpegs.

Not to mention that the site has no imprint, no address, no telephone and no way to contact them apart from a mail form. Yeah, looks very trustworthy.

This is what Achilles said at CEPIC:

The price level system of Dreamstime is one of the reasons that causes rejection for submitted series of similar photos: focusing on the best ones there is a greater probability to drive them to the higher levels of price with an advantage for the agency and the photographer.

Perhaps this makes sense if the subjects are the same, but it is totally silly if the subjects are different.

Veer / Re: New Veer Contributor Agreement Posted

Veer is one of the poorest performing agencies. Having a high payout limit of $100 means I probably have to wait years until I can get my cash out.

This move makes it very unlikely that I will supply them with many more images in the foreseeable future.

Oh, and I like the underhanded way of first attracting new uploaders and then changing the payment rules. I will remember that.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Unedited Nasa image ?
« on: May 02, 2010, 11:23 »
The rules keep changing and new submissions are held to ever higher standards, and rejected - leaving old submissions, which don't meet the new standards,  to keep pulling in the money.  It is not clear to me how this improves things for buyers.

This is especially problematic if this policy is effectively protecting low quality images from high ranking contributors like this one:

http://www.istockphoto.com/stock-photo-7754431-earth-with-night-lights-asia.php

while keeping better images from less prominent members out of the database.

Veer / Re: Setting up Veer
« on: July 29, 2009, 15:03 »
There still seem to be some problems with keywords and search...

If I search for "elephant" I get zero results.

If I search for "elephants" I get 461. At least in my files I did use the singular term as keyword, not the plural. But they do appear when searching for "elephants".

The same for 'globe'and 'globes'. I have reported this already to support. Let's hope it will be fixed soon.

Lookup 'legal entity' in a dictionary for your own language...

IMHO, if you are not a 'legal entity', you belong in A2.

Interestingly, Turbosquid (http://www.turbosquid.com), probably the market leader for 3d models, also lists several Superman and Spiderman models.

btw, is anyone else having problems with ftp uploads with jpgs larger that 9mb or is it just me? (when it reaches ~9mb the transfer restarts itself, uploading same files via browser works fine).

Yes, me too. There is another thread about FTP problems where I already reported it.

Veer / Re: Vector uploads need to be easier
« on: July 16, 2009, 10:34 »
We know this is a real pain for some of you - so we are looking into ways of tackling this in a future release.

I would appreciate an ETA for the improved vector upload process. 'Future release' sounds as if it could take quite some time. Just to know if I should wait with my uploads or bite the bullet and enter my keywords manually.

The upload via browser does not work for me with Firefox 3.0.11. The upload progress sits there forever at 0% and never completes. It works here with IE8, though, and I can upload pics with 17MB.

I can upload smaller files, but larger ones (approx 17MB) always fail.

Veer / Vector uploads need to be easier
« on: July 01, 2009, 11:13 »
There really needs to be a way to upload jpegs with IPTC data together with the eps files.

Currently you have to enter all descriptions and keywords manually, which is very slow. (The interface is rather cumbersome.)

I have no idea how I should uploads hundreds of vectors this way. It will take me days.

Veer / Re: Problem with FTB to Veer?

I hate to disappoint you, Brian, but with CuteFTP I have the same problem: the upload fails about halfway during the transfer.

Could it be that you accidentally set a file size limit of 10MB instead of the allowed 20MB?
It seems to fail always around the 10MB size.

Veer / Re: Problem with FTB to Veer?

Yup, having problems here, too. My upload always fails after approx. half of the file is uploaded, with a 'Connection closed by server' error message.
Tried it with Filezilla and Total Commander over several days now, no difference.
