"Shutterstock however is going through the roof."

They smell blood. I just received this email from them seconds ago:

Break Free From Exclusivity: We Make It Easy
Expand your horizons. If you're submitting exclusively to a different stock site, learn how to move your images to Shutterstock without interrupting your sales.

each week keeps getting worse and worse for me... i'm now down about 40% in weekly $ earnings from 'normal'.

Yeah, I'm roughly down about that amount .... from 'the good times'. I imagine there will be an Oct results thread on the Illustration forum on Tuesday since a premature one has already been locked.  It'll be interesting to hear what the damage is.

vectors might also be a contributing factor ... a "vector panic thread" was just locked on the illus forum

I am fairly certain that even if I had stayed exclusive, my 2011 income would have been lower than 2010,

I think you can be certainly certain.  My 2011 income is going to be less than 2009 ....  :P

Sorry, no new thoughts.  Just commiserating.

I'm an exclusive vector contributor, too.  Like most of you, the royalty cut left me completely demotivated and I'm not contributing much anymore.  I had high hopes that Vetta vectors would spark some interest in me again .... but no dice.

I've taken on a lot more freelance work to make up the difference and I'm working on some new personal projects, so there's not much time left for stock.   I really enjoyed contributing to istock, so I'm pretty disappointed at how things turned out.

...And let me know when you guys all get a check in the mail for your consulting time on telling them how they should run their business and what they need to do to fix it.

Exactly why I didn't fill out the survey. I'd be happy to consult on what they're doing wrong and what they can improve on. They can contact me to discuss terms if they're interested.

perhaps this is a last ditch effort by istock to try to get TPTB to come to their senses before they run things into the mud?

ETA - in light of the 'sugar-coated' comments, I realize this is a bit of a naive comment.  I'm one of the ones who didn't receive the survey.

I expect change ... more royalty cuts.

Even though I was upset with this round of cuts, I didn't anticipate how much the drop would ruin my motivation.  I used to enjoy contributing but now it takes a tonne of willpower just to be bothered to submit a few images.  I hoped that Vetta would stimulate my desire to do some higher quality stuff but no dice.  I worked for years to get that 40% and having it taken away was a pretty hard hit.  And with the possibility of further cuts .... well, what's the point?

I've channeled my energy into taking on more freelance work again and I'm happy doing that.

For me, August is trending towards being the worst month in years ... well below the level that makes exclusivity worthwhile.  Gonna be an interesting fall ...  8)

I hope not.   :P

Cheryl, at a certain point you have to stop caring.
So you think there's no big vector announcement coming?  ;)

The best match is a bit of a mixed bag for me (I'm also an exclusive vector contributor).  Sales and downloads are down, but the sales represent a dramatic increase in the variety of files sold instead of the same files over and over.  So I'm torn ... of course I'd like more sales but I also appreciate that -- from what I can see -- a wider variety of my files are ending up in front of buyers' faces.

The internet is more social now so word spreads faster with twitter and facebook. Ironic that istock was able to harness that social energy early and now -- just as everyone else has caught up -- is tossing it out the window.
