PicNiche Toolbar / Re: Is PicNiche still working !?
« on: October 08, 2010, 07:43 »
I use only the notifications tab in the sidebar so I must have clicked and hid it . Re-click and everything's there.
By the way is there a key combo to show / hide both bars ? 10.5.8 , FF 3.6.10 here .
Thanks for your work, Bob

Ah yes, this is quite a common mistake. Next time I get chance to rebuild the UI I'll prevent it being an issue :)

I run both the buyer search bar and the contributor bar, using the regular firefox toolbars menu (right-click on one of the default firefox toolbars) I enable one and disable the other. If you then middle-click (usually click the mouse-wheel, though I'm not sure what it would be on mac) on the P icon in the status bar (bottom right), it will toggle the visibility of both bars (so one become visible and the other becomes hidden). That way both bars need only one toolbar's height. You can of course just middle-click the P icon when both bars are visible and they will both become hidden.
Does that help?

I can't replicate that problem here, but I will keep an eye on it.
Are you guys on windows or mac? (if Mac, do you have Growl installed?)

didn't get any updaed picniche when I searched for updates via the firefox add on auto update...

They always take a few days to review it before updates are available through the addons window. You either need to wait for review or go to that link and update manually :)

Any news regarding ths IS poller ?

Yep, it should be working in this one, and any breaks should be fixed quicker in future.

Finally got this tested and updated on mozilla addons site.
Updated to 1.1.14, authed poller parsers load from server on boot if any changes at the agency sites. (Will mean faster updates and no need for a full new toolbar version for small changes).
The iStock poller works again too (or should on browser-restart after install of this version).

Any problems please let me know :)

156
Thanks to everyone who has put their voice in :)

It looks like I'm going to go forward with the project.
Will be up in beta soon (maybe by the end of the week) and will share more as soon as I know more :)

Any other issues/concerns/request please add to this thread and I'll try and incorporate into the build.

PicNiche Toolbar / Re: picNiche problems
« on: September 30, 2010, 03:01 »
I know this is old but I am having the same problems with 123rf not reading and have also tried every suggestion in this thread a few times.  Any update?

This happens occasionally for 123RF, there is nothing wrong with the toolbar or poller, it's just that the way they generate the earnings grid on the server can often take longer than the 20 seconds timeout. You can see this by opening the earnings page and giving it a count of how long it takes to finish, for me it's about 20-25 seconds most of the time, but sometimes it's longer (timeout is 30 iirc).

This is usually solvable by opening the site by hitting the button, then refreshing earnings (using the refresh earnings button on the toolbar). I assume they are running a monthly/weekly/daily-updated cache or similar for each user which is not particularly effective. I've asked them if I can help improve it as I have a lot of database/cache experience, but they're not interested.

Microstock Services / Re: isyndica is closing
« on: September 29, 2010, 17:24 »
Excellent response Seb, I'm very sorry to see you guys going, but thank you for the honest info on what happened.
Best of luck in the future, if there's ever anything I and picNiche can work with you on, you have my fullest attention :)

159
Bottom line is that if isyndica couldn't make it work, who could?
Unless you come up with some sort of software breakthrough that makes a compelling case for using your service....

I have a history of bringing new ideas to the areas I work, not all of them work, but some do, and those are the ones I keep running :)
There are more ways to do anything than 'just' the way it's been done before, and thus I invite comparison, I do not fear it as a reason not to try :)

160
I've spoken to Hugo (the iSyndica boss) several times in the past, he's a great guy. I was planning to add integration to the picNiche toolbar for iSyndica.

I've not heard specific details about why they are closing, though I'd be willing to venture a wild guess that it wasn't profitable enough for their investors, just in investigating the setup and running costs I'm finding it hard to see how they were running the service so well, and maintaining an excellent website when selling packages at that price, especially with a staff and board to worry about. Even with their popularity it's my view that it just can't have been making enough money to feed everyone long-term. < *disclaimer: total speculation AND my own opinion*

I've sent Hugo a query to see if he has any interest or objection in this replacement project though I'm not looking to buy since I'm not a big business here... everything I do is shoestring, sometimes it works well and sometimes it doesn't, but the only way to find out is to try :)

Please stay on topic in this thread :)

That's why I need everyone's feedback, if it's going to work well for everyone, I need all the info, suggestions & requests, issues and concerns I can get :)

Picniche still not working for istock, is it normal?
I've installed  the last version on mac and pc and istock balance is still freeze.

Yep, still not gotten round to fully testing these latest changes, so it's still the custom poller :)
Soon :)

162
Some verry interesting questions and issues raised, it's looking like there is some interest, and I'm investigating what I do with it from here. Please keep the feedback coming :)

Illustrations, again same as footage, yes for certain, though maybe not day 1 (which if I decide to do it will be soon).

I can say with some certainty that it won't be based on a flat monthly fee or subscription, and footage is highly unlikely to work on that model.
Both of these are for the same reason: for it to be both reasonably priced, and cost-effective to run, setting a single fixed cost without regard for usage would mean that either one of these 2 conditions must be met:
a) People using it less pay more per file, and people using it more pay less per file.
or
b) The price would have to raise after the 'honeymoon period' when the realisation of how nearsighted that pricing structure was.
Either of the above would not be fair to anyone, and for those of you who've worked with me in the past you know I like to keep things as fair as possible :)
I will put in stone now, it will not be a fixed fee service. I may however offer discounted pricing for bulk purchase (which would be more relevant to high quantity producers and footage artists), this option offers more of a balance between a happy customer and a productive and long-term operation (if you see what I'm saying ;)

The per-file pricing I mentioned is by no-means final, just envelope figures. and yes, my storage calc was off by a factor of 10 or more ;)
It would also have a referral programme of course, though I'd be unlikely to have a substantial 'free trial' beyond maybe a couple of images to check out the control panel.

163
I generally build with flexibility in mind, so would ultimately work with any file type and of any size.

For simplicity I try and stick with a 'fixed model' so pricing images around a couple of cents each is to make it easy to calculate/predict usage cost. For footage it would probably work just as well when priced by filesize, or by size canisters (<50meg, <100meg, <200meg etc etc).

My goal would be primarily to cover server and development costs, and since I'm just one developer (no board to appease) I have flexibility there to reduce (or increase) prices as needed.

For anyone who is price-sensitive, what do you think is the right price for it? I ask because I have a number of hosting options available with different costs for each aspect of the service, and I'm figuring out whether I go for a high-reliability or low-cost (one thing I can't sacrfice is security so even the cheapest option is more expensive than your average host).

For those who prefer analytics, the picNiche toolbar should be integrating with sites like Microstock Charts in future, would this be a suitable replacement to that part of their service?

Hey All

very sad to read about the closure of iSyndica today, but hey, I like problems to solve :)

I'm considering setting up a simple service to replace iSyndica, and I need to know whether it's something worth my time away from other projects.

It will be a simpler tool, and work like this:

  • You upload to a 'picNiche' FTP
  • You login and review received images
  • You set the destinations via unlimited 'custom FTP channels', and will add support for others via http upload in future
  • You pay per task...
for example: each file transfer will be about 2-4 cents depending on file size, storage will be priced about 1-2 cents per day per file so you can use it as a backup if you want.

It will be primarily for microstock, though i may add 'social' stuff if there is a demand.

What do you think? Please let me know cos it's quite an upfront outlay I need to know if it's worth it.

Cheers :)

Just took a look at it, I've updated the regex to test for values over 999.99 with a comma in (ie. 1,111.11). (If you open the Get More list and hit 'Update' for the iStock F5 poller, then test or refresh earnings it should work. (That assumes you currently have a balance containing a comma of course... If not, then I haven't a clue :/

Are you using iStock in english language, and is your balance display on the toolbar enabled in your iStock control panel? If so, what error does it give you?

I've still not had time to update the internal IS poller due to the way I'm making the update work for future changes. It's important that it's done right for security reasons so I'm not going to rush it. I'd usually put out a intermediate update, though it's likely that iStock's F5 bug-chasing would outdate it pretty quickly so for this instance I will wait until a proper solution is in place :)

For now use this:
In the meantime, Simon Grieg has submitted a Custom Poller for the new iStock F5 design. It should be in the Get More list if you open the picNiche options window, switch to the Custom Pollers tab and hit the 'Get More' button.

This is taking me a little longer to get finished than I'd hoped. It's nearly done, but not quite. I decided to let the toolbar update (just the poll specs, not the entire addon) from the picNiche server so I can respond faster to any site-changes. I just want to make sure it's 100% secure from attack before I put it out live.

Quick update here for anyone who may be interested.

The success of the api-for-agencies project has been, hmm... limited at best. I've had some useful feedback, but no firm committments to provide APIs for contributors (with or without the agencyKit). Things may develop in future, but there is unlikely to be any agencies adding contributor apis in the near future (most of them don't think it's worth it but I'm not going to get started on that now).

This means at this stage that the "Image Deck" is unlikely to ever come out of beta, as without half-decent automated systems to build it on top of, it's just too much work for me to do alone.
I'm not cancelling the image deck project, but for a while it will be taking a back-seat to all the stuff that was requested in the picNiche survey earlier this year. This will most-importantly include detailed earnings tracking and a toolbar-api so sites like microstock charts and lookstat can request secure access to your earnings data for charting and analysis.

I can't give a definite 'when' on that yet, but I'm currently building a redesign of the site to bring all the stuff which has developed over the last 2 years together (It think you'll all agree that picNiche.com is looking a bit dated and random now). Once that's up and running I'll have a better idea going forward :)

Not sure if anyone is interested in that, but there it is for those who are :) Any questions/comments/requests/insults/jokes? ;)

I'm not really up on blackberry app development, though I did build a prototype of a picNiche iPhone app a few months ago it was a pain to use (logging into the various sites in the app was a painful process as they don't have APIs yet).
Maybe I'll revisit the idea in future, but for now a mobile app for checking your earnings is not very likely to happen, the agencies just are not tech-aware enough for it to be practical.

Aye, the iStock poller is currently not working due to the ongoing changes at iStock.
I'm postponing fixing it for a few days until it either settles down, or I get chance to make the authenticated pollers autoupdatable without having to put out a whole new version of the addon.
I'll figure out which over the weekend :)

I've just checked through the source of iSyndica's addon, it doesn't seem to have anything which would cause a problem, they've namespaced it correctly and cleaned it up a lot since the version which prevented the picNiche bar working. I don't think that's the problem.
Did you turn off any other addons at the same time, or do you continue to get no popups if the iSyndica addon is turned back on?

It may be a firefox boot issue, I've never seen it on windows, but when I've been running on linux in a vm image set to run slowly, it can cause firefox to fail loading parts of it's core. If you system was particularly laboured, like during a boot while services were starting up or if you're running something like Windows 7 on an old pc, then this could be the cause of it not showing popups for that session. It may be that a reboot of the browser fixed it.

I've dug through the code and can't find anything which would obviously cause this, though I'll keep my eyes on it. If it happens again would you mind updating here? :)

I've just run a few tests and have noticed the iStock poller may be failing sometimes, not sure why yet, but will update sometime today/tomorrow. We can expect this quite a bit until they stop fiddling with F5 so I may leave iStock a few days each time it breaks for the next couple of weeks just so I don't end up putting out a patch every single day.
I'm working on setting it up so site changes don't need a brand new version, but will take me a month or so till I can roll that out cos I need to test thoroughly for any potential security issues.

I'm not seeing any problem with popups or notifications in the sidebar, it's likely another addon interfering with something in the firefox core and causing picNiche to error when it calls the function to make the popup. Would you mind PMing me a list of your extensions so I can check them out. You could also check the Error Console (Ctrl-Shift-J or Tools/ErrorConsole) just after you make a sale and see if it's reporting an error, that would help a lot of it is :)

Thanks for the info btw :)

Heya Stu.
It seems to be working ok for me since the update, and I stopped getting angry emails from people saying it was broken for iStock so I assumed it worked ok for everyone :)
It should have gone out on auto-update last week after the newest iStock changes for F5, but it may be worth checking yours updated by manually checking for an update in "Tools/Add-ons/FindUpdates" or heading over to the mozilla site to update direct from the files page: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/11476/versions/?page=1#version-1.1.3.
You should also check your settings at istock to make sure the balance of your account is output to the new bottom-toolbar (sometimes it seems they randomly turn it off).
It's also possible they've changed something which hasn't bubbled through to me yet if they're A-B testing, so please let me know if neither of those work and I'll dig into it further :)

As for the lack of a report in the sidebar, are you on Mac or PC? If Mac, make sure Growl is installed, if PC I'll dig around and try to replicate :)
