On DT 17 of my last 20 sales were from the use of key words, 20 sales before that was 16 sales from key words. So if the search is by key words the buyers will find your images ..... if you used the correct key words.
As an ex buyer of images, I always used key words to find an image.
I'm new on DT and found the site to be user friendly and it took me exactly 4 months from day one to reach the payout. (yesterday)
-Larry
woa, excuz me if I misread something. But june 16 you said you were unhappy with DT and was contemplating concentrating on some other site, now you say DT is great. how is it possible the in 4 days you went from unhappy to ecstatic? pls let me in on the secret
At that time I had a sudden drop in sales and I thought it was due to new search results. It was a 7 day period with no sales and then it picked right back up as before. So now I am happy again. So I should say Whoooops! -Larry

The only good thing about Big, other than that Liz and Joseph are superb Support people, is that you don't get paid 30 cents for a dl. But the sales are sllllooooow. And sometimes, they have a reviewer that is "weird" , who calls everything he/she sees a snapshot. (rejection: THIS IS A SNAPSHOT). Other than that, it is a wonderful site to contribute
Fast or Sloooooow Sales at BigStock depend on what the subject is that your selling. Mine is GOLF, SNOW SPORTS, REAL ESTATE, CITY OF MILWAUKEE, STATE OF WISCONSIN, for my images, BigStock outsells in dollars and in the number of dl's than ALL the other sites I am on put together. That's right, ALL of them. For the last 90 days BigStock is about 25 DL's and $30.00 ahead of all the rest put together. I know I have knocked BigStock many times when they had it coming to them, but I will also step up to the plate and defend them when they are in the right. I still think it is the best site to work with. -Larry

NO! But, if they did that before I added other sites to my name. i would have gone exclusive with them. too late now.
-Larry
you're joking aren't you Larry?
Not a joke! I was with them (BigStock) only for about 2 years, then they started the "snapshot" insults and I started looking at other sites and started uploading to them. I did let them know that I took it as an insult and not just a rejection reason. The word "snapshot" was to stay, I was told. .... so I left. After a long wait I went back onto BigStock when others said the "Snapshot" insults had stopped. That was several months ago and everything is going fine now. The best news is BigStock outsells (in dollars earned for me!) all the other sites combined that I am on. Has been and still is. To any site CEO reading this: Reviewers can make or break you. .... your choice. My 2 cents. -Larry

Yes, 'quality'. In other words, they want to keep selling what's been selling in the past. New images from new contributors go nowhere.
It seems to me that's self-defeating in the long run, but I'm obviuosly biased.
Is that why my sales went from nearly everyday and sometimes 5 or 6 sales a day to nothing in the last week? Perhaps I should focus my attention to a different site. -Larry

Larry, do they offer any exclusivity incentives?
NO! But, if they did that before I added other sites to my name. i would have gone exclusive with them. too late now. -Larry

I started with BigStock 2 years and 9 months ago and I have not regretted it for one minute.
1,325 sales from 657 different images with an average of .88+ per sale.
I get a paycheck from BigStock Every month.
Do they ever do things that I do not like? Yes! I bitch and complane and in the next breath brag about them. I will stick with them regardless.
When I ask for my monthly check, I usually get it with 24 - 48 hours. (They are not broke and pay their bills promptly. A very healthy sign.)

[EDIT] It may be more clever to restrict download size to say 8mpix than to make opt-out?
Good option... So, opt-out bigger than 2400 x 2400?
I think all sub sales should be limited to 1800 x 1800 pixels and smaller. All images over that size at regular posted prices. My 2 Cents. -Larry

What a surprise! I uploaded 4 images this morning and 8 hours later all approved. I think they set a new record for review times at BigStock. I have had less than 24 hours before and at the longest 19 days after Popular Photography gave them a nice write up.
Good work BigStock team!
-Larry
Woo-effing-hoo. Maybe they're just a lot less busy nowadays since we became aware of their poxy 20% commission rate.
I'm certainly not uploading to them again until they get back to the original 50% commission we used to have __ or until they start to match the sales volume of IS. It's just not worth my time to do so.
If you did not understand the rates .... well you did not read or cannot understand the terms clearly printed on the BigStock site as quoted below:
From the Photographers FAQ
How much can I earn? There is unlimited potential for earning. We pay at this time $0.50 commission per credit spent for standard images. Special licensed images is slightly different. But standard images sell for between 1 and 6 credits, so you earn from 50 cents to $3.00 per download.
As advertised on BigStock home page. Image Pricing: Image pricing is flexible and our prices are the lowest in the industry based on the quality and file size you receive:
First you purchase image credits. With these credits you can download images - larger image cost more, smaller images cost less: Smaller images, 900x675 px = 1 credit Medium images, 1600x1200 px = 2 credits Large images, 2800x1800 px = 4 credits Extra large images, 3800x2900 px = 6 credits Image Credits Cost Your Price Per Credit 1 $2.50 $2.50 10 $20 $2.00 20 $35 $1.75 30 $45 $1.50 100 $140 $1.40 300 $300 $1.00
If you did not read or understand the rates of payments and commissions when you signed up with BigStock (if you did) that is your fault. It has never been a secret for at least the last 2 years and 8 months that I have been on BigStock. I read it and understood it from day one.

would people be interested in some kind of opt out of creating and offering different sizes of their images on a site?
I believe many would like the option to opt out. -Larry

My thoughts on the original question.
Upload the largest file size that you can. You will be giving your customers the best possible quality and when the micro sites decide to throw out the old unsold low res images that are cluttering all the micro sites .... yours will not be one of them.

If any photographer or artist of any kind is thrilled and thinks his/her work is perfect ..... Will never improve. Tomorrow you must make better shots than you did today.

I had Yaymicro remove my images several months ago. All promises and no action. With nearly 2,000 images on the site for about 7 months and zero sales. I gave up and quit.
Too bad it was nicely designed for uploading, in fact the best.

So, now CC becomes microstock site?
They sell Royalty Free the same as the rest of the Micro Stock sites. Except you may set your own price the same as FeaturePics. Was it RM (Rights Managed) before? -Larry

I have about 450 on CC but no sale yet... I'm a masochist on CC...
But I will continue with upload because this pricing model is future of RF...
Your links to Cutcaster and BigStock do not work. -Larry

As a photographer YOU are responsable for any image you submit to any site. If there are lawsuits for fraud, fake Model releases, missing Property releases, etc., The lawsuit will be naming the site and the photographer, but the end result is the photographer is the one to end up in court. As a photographer YOU are the suppler and the responsable party.
On the other hand you have released your images to a stock site to sell and protect your interest as well as theirs .... sounds good ..... But when did you last hear of a stock site taking a image thief to court and suing the crap out of them? Never!
If your a Pro Photographer with a studio and belong to the PPA (Professional photographers of America) and some one violates your copyright they will sick their lawyers on them big time and win. every time! (I retired from the PPA in 2002)
No one is protecting the interest of stock photographers. And thousands of images are stolen every day, many at full resolution with purchases made by stolen credit cards. You and I get nothing for this and no help in stopping it.
This business needs some big changes before it falls flat on it's face and photographers quit like flies. As an old timer (72 yrs old this June) I have seen many industries come and go.
If I was not fully retired I would quit right now. I do not need the money and have nothing else to do, so I will go along with the system until it collapes on to its self. (Soon)
My 2 cents, -Larry

I wouldn't think you would want to lock in both height and width dimensions, as that ratio is going to vary depending on the type of camera used to take the image (as madelaide said) and/or whether or not the image was cropped or whether its orientation is horizontal or vertical.
I think I would just use "longest dimension" as in: small-- longest dimension = 400px medium -- longest dimension = 800px large -- longest dimension = 1600 px ex-large -- longest dimension = 3000 (native for 6mp cameras) super-size = full width/height of picture if greater than 3000px
I agree 100% with you! I believe it is the best way. -Larry

Think twice before giving up on them!
Adroma and B&H are the two most honest and reliable camera dealers in the USA. I have bought from both of them many times. Amazon once and once burned I will never buy from them again.
Now that you know the shipping requirements, work with them on a shipping address that will have someone home to sign for the delivery.
The requirements are for your (and their) protection against fraud.
My 2 cents.

I have tried it before and gave up.
Chances are you will get an "over filtered, send the original image" rejection.
Actually, if the designer is worth being called a Designer he/she can do it with no problem. ..... and many do.

The best submission page has Yaymicro. If I should rate submission pages on different sites from 1-10, I would give 10 only to Yaymicro. Featurepics, Crestock and Canstockphoto would get 8, and the rest would be lower.
In Yaymicro you can edit all info in place, without opening any pop-up window or another page. It's by far the most intuitive and intelligent submission process.
I agree 100% Yaymicro is at least 10 steps ahead of any site for upload ease! Too bad there are no sales there! -Larry

Any way to opt out of this? I still have memories of the istock forumeter - that was a spectacular failure.
I am here to get useful information and hopefully share some when I have it. I have absolutely no interest in participating in a popularity contest.
I agree with Lisa 100% ... I' am not interested in a popularity contest and so far I have made no useful post so perhaps I will not make anymore at all.
-Larry
Since at the time you wrote this, you had only made one post since the implementation of this, and that one post was in the Cutcaster forum, I'm not sure how much feedback you'd expected to receive on that one post. I don't think people are going back to previous threads and reading them again just so they can vote for people.
Are they??
I could care less if I had a hundred or zero. The point is that it is a matter of numbers and some members will post on everything all day log to get big numbers and join with agroup of friends to vote on each other. = Popularity contest and i am not interested in this feature at all.
My 2 cents. -Larry
