And .... Whitechild, I bet you did it!  ;D

Thanks!

Any way to opt out of this?  I still have memories of the istock forumeter - that was a spectacular failure.

I am here to get useful information and hopefully share some when I have it.  I have absolutely no interest in participating in a popularity contest.

I agree with Lisa 100% ... I' am not interested in a popularity contest and so far I have made no useful post so perhaps I will not make anymore at all.

My hat is off to you John!

I truly wish every site had the balls to remove old unsold and low res images that were OK at the time of upload but fall behind the new stuff being produced today with better cameras and stricter approval rates. Many of the "old" sites have images that were produced with 1 and 2 MP point and snap cameras and the stuff is still there!

Yet in the same breath they have no problem rejecting new stuff shot with high resolution Canon and Nikon's due to "we have enough of that subject"

I have gone over my own portfolio of 3,000 images and deleted 600 of them. Out with the old and in with the new.

ok, thanks for the info. I am getting failures on web uploads as well, so its not just ftp.
I will leave it for a bit and see if things get sorted out.

I just tried the web upload and had the same problems. I'll try again in a few hours as they could be making changes on the site and slowing everything down to a standstill. Hope it is something good!

There was a notice of FTP upload problems at BigStock on their ALERTS area. The Alert is no gone, so I presume the problem has been fixed.

Try again, then if it is still not working contact service and ask for help.

Update on the "deletes":

http://www.microstockgroup.com/bigstock-com/BigStock-deleting-old-photos-will-not-affect-your-upload-approval-rating/

Great news!

Even better if they can make it retroactive and help the people in the past that made errors or errors were made by the upload process. (non valid .jpg) I bet I have had a hundred of those deletes.

Thanks Tim (BigStock)

It all looks good to me and on par with other sites. I've had about 10 EL's total from two sites and believe me they are always welcome! A nice surprise for the day. With that said, do it!

On another note, I have been invited to join you and I will be shortly as soon as I finish up some other things. You appear to be a "go getter" and active on this site, that was a big factor in deciding to join you.

I see you are from Syracuse N.Y. ... I was born and raised in Ithaca, N.Y and have family in Syracuse area. Nice country!

good luck.

The issue with deleting old work is that some people take this microstock stuff as a business and it's hard to brand yourself with 4 year old work on your "portfolio."  I have another photography business and you can BET there's no 4 year old work on my website.  We show new, current stuff to get jobs.  We want to show new, current stuff in micro too so buyers bookmark us, favorite us, etc. and come back time & again to our folio.

This is why all RF Sites should DELETE all images on their site over 2 years old and low rated. Make room for the new and better stuff instead of ... we have enough of that subject rejects!!!

SALES? What sales?
I was on there for 7 months with nearly 2,000 images and zip, nada, nothing for sales.
It is also easy to delete your port there which I did.
Great easy site to upload to but that is all.

-Larry

Why did you take your images off?

I'm going to be 72 years old this June ...... I don't think I will live another 50 years to get my first payout on Yay. Who knows it could take even longer than that!

yay, ya, like so many offsprings, all exciting and full of energy at the first go round, but no lasting power.
lots of talk but no action... like NATO (No Action Talk Only)   ;D

That is a good one to remember! Like NATO (No Action Talk Only)

I do not have a problem with any site setting upload limits and making rules for us photographers to follow. Which we should and cooperate with the site. It is best for all concerned.

However I do have a problem when they set the rules for US to follow and they do not follow THEIR rules.

Example: From my port on BigStock.

Upload Summary
Approved:  2,148 ***
*Denied/Deleted:184
Waiting Approval:0
Pending Your Edit:0
Total:2,332

**Your Approval Rating: 92.11%

**Approval Rating (experimental): an overall status on your photos you've submitted in the last 90 days.

***NOTE: This is the accurate number of approved images in the Admin Queue database, but it may not be the same as the BigStock photo search database, since the latter is updated only twice daily.

This is the rule that BigStock does not follow:
**Approval Rating (experimental): an overall status on your photos you've submitted in the last 90 days.

If BigStock followed their rule of 90 days my approval rating would be 100% (Last 90 days - 21 uploads and no deletes. = 100% approved. Yet my approval rating is only 92.11%

If BigStock followed this rule they made many of the persons posting before me would no longer have a problem as the problem would have been fixed automatically in 90 days.

I'm not knocking BigStock as they are my favorite site (for many reasons) I just wish they would listen to their contributors more offten and make corrections to benefit all.

Just my .02 cents.

General Stock Discussion / Re: 2 accounts, one photographer

Simple solution!

Have one account in your name and another in your spouses name. No one will know who actually took the photos.

Started with BigStock June 21, 2006 with this photo:

It has been sold 3 times.
Today I would not start out on any site with a nature shot but 4 out of five were accepted. After my first month of $30.00 plus earnings I have never missed a monthly check since then. (30.00 to 75+)

Very steady earner for me.

General Photography Discussion / Re: Importance of Tripod
« on: April 18, 2009, 13:12 »
I have seen the comparisons and will acknowledge that for some situations a tripod will make a noticeable difference in sharpness.

I lugged tripods all over for a few years, but I found it hampered my shooting style.  As Tan pointed out I like the freedom to change angles or positions on the fly, particularly since I am shooting people, not landscapes or static objects.

For the half of my work that is shot outside, I find it easier to plan shoots for good light, use fast lenses, and supplement the natural light with reflectors and/or flash to get the sharpness I want.

In studio I used to have hot lights and I had to use a tripod because I could not get the shutter speeds I needed.  My back would get so sore from hunching over that tripod for hours!!  Since I got my fast strobes a couple of years back my tripod has been gathering dust.  :D

If I was  "People Shooter" like most of your port nicely illustrates, I would give up the tripod also. With people in action outdoors or inside you need to move with the subjects to get the "just right" shot.

However I am not a people shooter i prefer shooting subjects that do not talk to me!  ;D Like farms, scenics. sports, wildlife, etc. After a million weddings and studio portraits for 55 years, I've grown tired of directing people.
But with my age (71) I cannot hold a camera steady as I used to so on many occasions I use a monopod and image stabilized lenses and that combo works very well.

To each their own.

I bet no one could make a difference between a photo made with and without a tripod with this setup.

I hate dogmas  ;D

With all else being equal .... The shot with the LEVEL HORIZON was shot with the use of a tripod.
There is a reason for my user ID! I'm never without one.

Canon / Re: Which 70-200 lens to choose?
« on: April 16, 2009, 08:17 »
The sigma 70-200 has 2 major problems compared to Canon:
1. Lack of contrast. This results also in very poor color reproduction so even if you shoot raw, boosting the colors/contrast is simply not the same than capturing the colors/contrast.
2. Sharpness. Compared to Canon, the sharpness at f2.8 is bad.
Also chromatic aberrations are a problem but they are correctable. What isn't correctable it's the fringe (green-cyan halo around bright spots/areas)

I recommend buying the Canon 70-200 f/4 L IS USM. With low budget without IS, with high budget, the f/2.8 IS USM.

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=404&Camera=9&Sample=0&FLI=4&API=0&LensComp=469&CameraComp=453&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=4&APIComp=0

I agree with Icefront 100%
My son has the Canon 70-200 f/4 L IS USM and I have the f/2.8 version of it. We cannot tell the difference in sharpness but we can tell the difference in weight! The f/2.8 is heavy! But I like low light shooting of wildlife so the f/2.8 is a must for me. You will love either one. Forget Sigma! If you have Canon buy Canon lenses if Nikon buy Nikon lenses!

Another place to check lens tests.

Bigstock.com / Re: New keyword rejection from BigStock
« on: March 30, 2009, 18:51 »
I Would contact [email protected] and ask them to tell you what is wrong with the keywording of the images. In most cases that should work.

I have never had such a reject in nearly 3 years at BigStock. This could be from a new approver that screwed up!

Either way Service should be able to help you.

Keywords: The safe way. If you cannot see the "word" in the image do not add it. EX: You see a black hat, you can add, black and hat but do not add sunglasses if the subject is not in the image.

I avoid adding conceptual feelings in an image. Such as Happy if the person is not displaying a happy look.

Yes, I get some wrong also but I do try and that is about all we can do.

Hope this helps.

I use Canon because it was the first DSLR I could afford!  A few years back when DSLR's were still priced beyond the average persons reach (okay MY REACH) Canon came out with the first Digital Rebel.

I didn't end up getting the Rebel because when I called Adorama about getting one they had a slightly used D60 for only a couple of hundred more.  That was my first DSLR and it still seems to hold true that comparable gear from Nikon costs more.

Of course I have had to deal with the problems of Canon releasing cameras with bugs and glitches, so maybe the Nikons are worth the extra for doing better QC.  I don't know.

After working my way through 7 successive dslrs I think I have found heaven in the 5D series.  FWIW I still have the D60 and it is still an awesome camera.  Can't bear to part with it.

I'm with you here! The Digital Rebel caused me to trade in my Canon Elan 7E film camera. I have now sold all of my film goodies and keep going up the Canon ladder and buying the next big item. The 5 DII is next.

I've tried the same files twice over a 5 day period. They never showed up.  I guess I'll try once more, then give up.

Your doing something wrong.
I have been uploading to them every day 10-20 images for the last three weeks.
No problems. Zero.

4-24 hours and they are in the unfinished area.
