I started using this book way back. I think my first edition was 1979. I bought a copy of the 2007 edition when my photography interests were revived -- my grandson started racing motorcycles.
My first question is ... is this book still a valid reference? Do you use it? Can anyone tell me about Tom Stack & Associates? Didn't it used to be a major stock house? How about Sportslight Photo? Have any of you action shooters tried it?
Thanks in advance.
Warren Price
20 Years ago it was the book to have! IF you shot mostly large format (at least 2 1/4) preferably 4x5 Color Transparency's. I have sold images to many references in the old books. Some images for calendars at $500.00 each. Digital changed everything and the book is still living in the past. I do not remember the agency's you asked about. But I sold through Gama Photo Agency and I had a rep in N.Y. City during my earlier years. I have been retired for a long time now and only shoot to please myself now and I could care less what the reviewers like or dislike. Selling Digital RF images now at five hundred or a thousand dollars a year is next to nothing. Won't even buy my favorite lens! -Larry

Try a lawyer or collection agency at their city. They are in Hungary. Yap, good luck.
What? No laws there? Stiff anyone anywhere and get away with it? I bet they have lawyers and will take cases. Yes, it is last resort, but better than doing nothing. Or should we take that as a lesson and deal with our own country's only? Hmmmmmm. -Larry

When any company starts defaulting on their suppliers and taking longer to pay or not paying at all, just giving promises .... well, the answer is quite clear. They will most likely bite the dust and fold up. Those that do not collect will lose their money.
Try a lawyer or collection agency at their city.
As for the "Big Six" ..... BigStock is not on the list this month but they pay within hours. Every time I request it for nearly 3 years now. I have faith they will be here after some of the big boys are buried in the dirt.
Time will tell.
Good luck!

Why not post links to the sites that are stealing images so we can all send them an email and bitch about it? And everyone join in and send the links to each site that has a visable watermark on it.
Something might happen then! No link = nothing!

Sales are stepping up a bit there but review times are ridiculous. I uploaded to all sites 10 days ago and have had dozens of sales frrom the batch over all sites but BS haven't even looked at them yet.
Why even care how long it takes to review anybodys images? As long as it is done correctly is what counts. For the last few months I have been recieving 100% approved on BigStock ... at that rate I do not care if it takes a month to review them.
I have been on BigStock going on three years and I have seen the review times go from hours to 19 days. They recently made some very nice changes to the site and I would guess that some of their time was spent on that project. (If you don't know what the changes are ... go there and look around!)
Very steady paychecks from BigStock.

There's a thread about it on the DT forums. It is only disabled for a couple of hours a day while they update the site so either use FTP or wait a couple of hours.
Couple hours = Approximately 2 hours.
Actually by my watch a couple of hours has been 4 hours and then 9 hours. Today is 3.5 hours so far.

Since January I've put about 50 images on DT and SS. On DT I got two sales in the first week and absolutely nothing since. On SS I've had 55 sales and they're continuing at a steady rate. Same photos.
So for me, DT has so far been a complete waste of time. Some posters have said that if you keep uploading, things start to sell after several months to a year.
I have to suspect that some sites heavily weight your images based on the popularity of your previous images - which probably makes sense for the microstock, but may mean that the ramp-up for a new submitter is now extremely long - if it's still possible at all.
It is not fair to judge any site with a port of only 50 images. I just started on DT with 160 images and 8 sales so far. (5 weeks) Also it depends on the type of images, some sell on site one but stand still on site two.
You have no links to your post or to you personally. Why hide? Just curious.

At DT I use the spelling checker on every image. If it indicates it is wrong I either use a different word or change it to their suggestions. No Rejects.

Another reason why I will not send in 10 images to them and beg to be accepted there. They are not the only fish in the ocean. Hint: Do not bite the hand that feeds you. Not funny but I just had to say it. -Larry

I had a good month with them in February. Not a BME, but up close.
It's all swings and roundabouts, ebb and flo, waxing and waning ...
In order to have a reliable month to month comparison, you should have at least 1,000 images on your port and even then, a variety of subjects. Example: If your port is 90 % Christmas images do not expect much return this month. In summary: 1,000 plus images in a variety of concepts. = Reliable month to month comparison to the same month LAST year.-Larry

The 28-300mm f/3.5-4.6L IS USM lens is a bad choice! Hire a strong person to carry it for you! I personally love the 24-105 IS Lens as a carry everywhere lens. Sorry for your loss as I had a house and a studio burn to the ground and lost everything both times. (five years apart) -Larry

Well.... LCJ is my initials and Tripod was my nick name for years as I was almost never seen without one. But now with image stabilised lenses I almost never have a tripod with me anymore. A monopod sometimes. End of story. Even tho assface is quite easy to remember! -Larry

Hi all:
Just submitted some images to Bigstock for approval; can anyone tell me what the estimate review time is?
Thanks much,
It has been running 4-6 days from approval to seeing it on your portfolio. -Larry

UPDATE: Friday the 13th
I did it! I signed up with DT today and I gave a referral to the person that helped me the most.
I want to thank all of you for all the help and suggestions. I did read them all and I checked your portfolio if you had a link for it.
It will be 127 hours from now for the images to be on site, then you can see who was the person I gave the referral to and as I will be uploading about 2,000 images, they should be able to make a few bucks from that.
I will upload slowly until I know what they will not reject.
Lesson: Be nice and help someone as you may very well be rewarded in cash and returned kindness.
To all, again thanks!

I would try them both ways, separately and as a collage. I did with this one, the individuals shots have all sold but the collage just gets looked at. Different strokes for different folks. -Larry

@Lcjtripod, would you not need a property release from the hotel?
Also, what about liability insurance in case someone became injured during the shoot? I doubt that the hotel would want to take on the liability. Or course I could be completely mistaken on this point and would love to hear differing opinions.
Even better if someone here knows the answer for certain
This can all be as elaborate or as simple as you want. If logos are visable, yes, a PR would be needed. Locations can be anyplace, even a vacant warehouse, a park, beach, someones home, etc. A group of photographers and models could be as small as jut two photographers and two models. It does not have to be an elaborate affair. Have fun, meet new friends and shoot all day. -Larry

Istockphoto organize meetings for exclusive contributors called Lypses. Do any other micro stock companies offer similar social get togethers. I have never had the opportunity to attend a lypse myself and when i first heard of such a thing i was very interested. I am now though very sceptical of the whole idea. The cost of travel and accommodation seem too high to warrant the effort. These are highlighted as social gatherings and top models are hired and groups of shooters have a certain period of time to compose their artistic eye over the set. We do have some very artistic shots coming from lypses and i am sure istockphoto will have more but will the contributors who attend make money out of the shots taken/accepted at these gatherings???
Do it yourself!Have 6-10 photographers in your area chip in for a pro model(s) and bring an amateur model, (wife, mother, brother, friend or whatever.) Have a big BBQ in your backyard or a park. Rent a room at a luxury hotel and shoot your models and fellow photographers until the cows come home. Everybody signs a MR for everyone else. Want business shots, have everyone bring or wear a suit for business and rent a conference room at a big hotel. Fun and it works! -Larry
